The 2009–2012 Mercedes-Benz W212 E63 AMG spans two V8 engine families, so the year in a listing alone is not enough to identify a car. Early 212.077 models use the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M156; later W212 versions use the 5.5-liter twin-turbo M157, with rear-wheel-drive and 4MATIC variants. Confirm the VIN, market and vehicle data card before relying on a specification or ordering parts.
Which engine is in a W212 E63 AMG?
There is an important engine transition within this model range. Mercedes-Benz Clubs’ technical guide lists the 2009–2011 E 63 AMG 212.077/277 with the 6,208 cc M156 V8, rated at 386 kW and 630 Nm. It lists M157.981-powered 212.074/274 variants from 2011 onward, with outputs shown as 386 kW and 700 Nm or 410 kW and 720 Nm. The 4MATIC 212.092/292 is also listed from 2011 onward. Those broad year labels overlap at 2011, and the precise configuration depends on market and vehicle. The 2010 US-market owner’s manual identifies its E63 as chassis 212.077 with engine type 156. For a 2011 or 2012 car—or any imported or differently specified vehicle—use the VIN, data card and local-market documentation rather than assuming the engine from the model year alone.

These figures are specific to the 2010 US-market E63 configuration identified in the owner’s manual; they are not universal specifications for every 2009–2012 W212 E63.

These are manufacturer specifications from the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class owner’s manual. The manual requires premium fuel and notes that performance can vary with fuel octane. Verify plug fitment by VIN and market before buying; the specified part number should not be assumed to fit every car in the title range.
Transmission and drivetrain differences

For a later car, establish whether it is the rear-wheel-drive 212.074/274 or the 4MATIC 212.092/292 before comparing specifications or service records. The available figures identify these as distinct configurations, but do not establish that one is universally preferable or less costly to own.
What to check before buying a W212 E63 AMG

- Camshafts, lifters and cam lobes: Ask whether the engine has a documented history of camshaft or lifter wear, or damaged cam lobes. Service records and a specialist inspection are more useful than assuming condition from age or mileage alone.
- Camshaft adjusters: The same guide reports camshaft-adjuster failures. Check for relevant repair documentation and have concerns assessed before purchase.
- Configuration and maintenance history: Match the VIN and data card to the engine and drivetrain, then review records for the specific car. An M156-era inspection note should not automatically be applied to a later M157 vehicle.

For a confirmed 2010 US-market 212.077, the owner’s manual specifies NGK ILZKAR 7A10 spark plugs; confirm fitment before ordering for any other year or market.
