The 2006 Harley-Davidson XL 1200R is the Roadster model in that year’s XL 1200 Sportster range. For owners and prospective buyers, the essentials are to use the manufacturer’s 2006 owner’s manual for published specifications, check recalls by the individual motorcycle’s VIN, and treat the parts catalog as a parts reference—not a repair procedure.
Where the XL 1200R fits in the 2006 Sportster range
Harley-Davidson’s 2006 Sportster owner’s manual identifies the XL 1200R Roadster among its XL 1200 models. The measurements below are the manufacturer’s published specifications for the XL 1200R; they describe the model specification, not the condition or dimensions of a particular modified or damaged motorcycle.

| Dimension | Published specification |
|---|---|
| Wheelbase | 60.0 in (1524 mm) |
| Overall length | 90.1 in (2288.5 mm) |
| Overall width | 36.7 in (932.2 mm) |
| Road clearance | 5.6 in (141 mm) |
| Overall height | 49.2 in (1249.7 mm) |
| Saddle height | 28.1 in (713.7 mm) |
These figures are useful for checking published dimensions and estimating fit, but they are not a substitute for inspecting the specific bike. Seat, suspension, tires, damage, and other changes can affect what an individual motorcycle measures or how it feels.
Where to find a repair or service manual
Start with Harley-Davidson’s 2006 Sportster owner’s manual for owner-facing information and the manufacturer’s model specifications. For repair procedures, make sure any manual you consider explicitly covers the 2006 XL 1200R or the applicable 2006 XLH 1200 Roadster configuration.

A third-party retailer lists a repair/service manual for a 2006 XLH 1200 Sportster Roadster and describes a downloadable PDF with maintenance, chassis, engine, fuel, starter, drive/transmission, electrical, wiring-diagram, and troubleshooting material. That is the retailer’s description; it does not establish factory provenance, a printed edition, or current availability from Amazon.
- Check the seller, exact year and model coverage, file or print format, and the manual’s legitimacy before purchasing.
- Do not assume a catalog or an owner’s manual contains the same step-by-step procedures as a repair manual.
- For safety-critical work or unclear procedures, use a qualified motorcycle technician rather than relying on an unverified document.
How to look up recalls for a 2006 Sportster
Recall status is specific to the motorcycle’s VIN. The model year alone cannot establish whether a particular campaign applies or whether it has been completed. Harley-Davidson’s recall information database goes back to July 1999; use its recall lookup for the individual bike.
Rank #2
- Every Clymer repair manual contains hundreds of original photographs and illustrations obtained from the complete disassembly and assembly of the machine covered.
- Find the motorcycle’s 17-character VIN. Harley-Davidson says it is stamped on the steering head and printed on a label on the right front down tube.
- Enter that VIN in Harley-Davidson’s current recall lookup.
- Follow the results for that VIN, and contact a Harley-Davidson dealer if you need clarification about a campaign or its completion.
When considering a used bike, compare the VIN on the motorcycle with its paperwork before relying on a lookup result.

Harley-Davidson hosts a 2006 Sportster parts catalog. It can help identify parts, but Harley-Davidson explicitly warns: “THIS IS NOT AN ASSEMBLY MANUAL AND SHOULD NOT BE USED AS SUCH.” Confirm the part number and fitment for the 2006 XL 1200R before ordering; a catalog entry alone is not a repair instruction or proof that a part is currently in stock.

Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Identity and recalls: verify the 17-character VIN against the paperwork and run it through Harley-Davidson’s recall lookup.
- Documentation: confirm that a repair manual covers the exact year and model and that the seller’s format and provenance are clear.
- Parts: use the manufacturer’s catalog for reference, then verify the specific part number and XL 1200R fitment.
- Condition and history: inspect the individual motorcycle and its maintenance records; published model specifications cannot establish the state of a used example.
