Its specially prepared 5.0-liter Cammer V8 was rated at 440 horsepower, compared with 300 horsepower for the production 2005 Mustang GT. The GT-R used the new Mustang’s design as a starting point, then added substantial race-specific engineering.
What was the 2005 Mustang GT-R?
Ford introduced the Mustang GT-R concept in New York on April 7, 2004, as a 40th-anniversary tribute and a possible future race car. It previewed the look of the 2005 Mustang but was built for track use, not sold as a standard road-going trim. Ford’s announcement described the concept as a production-derived shell adapted around racing equipment. Ford’s 2004 announcement
Ford credited design direction to Doug Gaffka, design director of Ford Performance Group. Saleen’s company history says its Special Vehicles team assisted Ford Performance Group with the build. Saleen’s account of the concept
GT-R concept versus the production 2005 Mustang GT
| Area | Mustang GT-R concept | Production 2005 Mustang GT |
|---|---|---|
| Status and purpose | Ford racing concept presented as a possible future race car; track-focused. | Production model for road use. |
| Engine and output | Ford Racing 5.0-liter Cammer V8, rated at 440 horsepower by Ford. | V8 rated at 300 horsepower in Ford Communications Network material. |
| Chassis and equipment | Reinforced structure, roll cage, race suspension, racing brakes, slick tires and competition-oriented drivetrain. | Production-car specification; the cited Ford release gives no comparable race equipment. |
| Availability | Concept vehicle, not a regular-production trim. | Regular-production Mustang model. |
Ford’s 440-horsepower figure belongs to the concept’s prepared Cammer engine; it should not be attributed to an ordinary 2005 Mustang GT. Ford stated that the concept retained 85 percent of the production car’s body components while reinforcing the structure. That is Ford’s description of the concept, not an independently measured comparison. Ford’s 2004 announcement Ford Communications Network material on the production Mustang

Engine, transmission and drivetrain
The GT-R’s Ford Racing 5.0-liter “Cammer” V8 had an aluminum block, four-valve heads, forged pistons and 11.0:1 compression. Ford rated it at 440 horsepower. A technical specification summary lists 400 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm and peak horsepower at 7,000 rpm. Ford’s 2004 announcement The Mustang Source’s GT-R specification summary
Power went through a Ford Racing/Tremec T-56 six-speed manual, heavy-duty clutch and flywheel, and custom metal-matrix-composite aluminum driveshaft. The race differential used a 4.56:1 final drive. These are concept specifications, not evidence that the parts fit a stock Mustang as direct replacements. The Mustang Source’s GT-R specification summary

Ford also said the Cammer crate engine was available to grassroots racers and could be tuned above 500 horsepower under certain racing-series rules. That was a historical, conditional racing statement—not a guaranteed street-car output or confirmation of present-day availability. Ford’s 2004 announcement
Chassis, brakes, tires and body
The concept retained a production-derived Mustang shell but was reinforced for track use and fitted with a chrome-moly roll cage and race suspension. Valencia Orange lightweight body panels, a carbon-fiber hood, aerodynamic splitters and a spoiler gave it a more purposeful exterior. Inside, it had a racing seat and harness. The specification summary lists Brembo Racing six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, with 14.3-inch front and 13-inch rear rotors. The concept ran 20-inch wheels on Pirelli racing slicks—equipment suited to its track-oriented purpose, not ordinary street driving. The Mustang Source’s GT-R specification summary

A historical SEMA program page reports that Ford teamed with 3dCarbon to produce a GT-R body kit for the 2005 Mustang program. That establishes the historical program, but not whether a kit is currently available, what a particular listing includes, or whether it fits a specific car. If you are considering a GT-R-inspired kit, verify the specific seller’s current listing and confirm the model year, coupe or convertible compatibility, included panels and hardware, and whether the design reproduces the concept or only borrows its styling. A body kit is not the same as the Cammer engine, race suspension, brakes, transmission or other competition parts fitted to the concept.
