The 2003 Honda CR-V has the edge on the documented power and historical crash-test comparisons, while the 2003 Toyota RAV4 is the lower-output 2.0-liter model from before Toyota’s 2004 engine and stability-control update. Neither model is automatically the better used buy: condition, equipment, maintenance evidence, price and VIN-specific recall status should decide between the actual vehicles you are considering.
How the 2003 engines compare
Honda Canada’s 2003 specification sheet lists a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve i-VTEC four-cylinder for the 4WD LX and EX configurations it covers. It is rated at 160 hp at 6,000 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, runs on regular unleaded, and uses Honda’s Real Time 4WD system. These figures describe the listed Canadian 4WD trims, not every market or configuration. Honda Canada’s 2003 CR-V specifications
Toyota’s generation history gives the second-generation RAV4’s 2.0-liter VVT-i engine 148 hp and 135 lb-ft. Toyota identifies the 2.4-liter, 161-hp engine and standard Vehicle Stability Control as changes for the 2004 model year. Those updates should not be attributed to a 2003 RAV4. The manufacturer source is a generation overview rather than a complete 2003 trim-by-trim specification sheet. Toyota’s RAV4 generation history
On the figures available, the CR-V has more stated power and torque. That does not establish which individual vehicle feels quicker or suits a particular driver better; transmission, drivetrain, condition and vehicle history also matter.

What the historical crash tests say
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s original moderate-overlap front test rated the 2003 CR-V Good and the 2003 RAV4 Acceptable. The CR-V result came from a 2002 vehicle and applies to 2002–2006 models. The RAV4 result applies to vehicles built after October 2000 and before January 2004. IIHS 2003 Honda CR-V ratings · IIHS 2003 Toyota RAV4 ratings
In the original side test, the CR-V was rated Marginal and the RAV4 Poor. The CR-V test vehicle was a 2003 LX 4WD without optional side airbags; that result applies to 2002–2004 models. The RAV4 test vehicle was a 2003 L 4WD without optional side airbags; its result applies to 2001–2005 models. IIHS says optional side airbags and structural changes began on the RAV4 in 2004. On the CR-V, front and rear head-curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags became standard beginning with 2005 models.

These are historical results under IIHS’s original test and rating protocols. They compare the tested crashworthiness attributes; they are not a complete present-day safety rating or a promise of how a decades-old vehicle will protect its occupants. Confirm the equipment on the specific vehicle, including whether it has side airbags.
Cabin and cargo practicality
Honda’s 2002 CR-V launch press kit compared the redesigned CR-V with the 2002 RAV4, reporting 106.0 cubic feet of passenger volume and 39.4 inches of rear leg room for the CR-V, versus 92.0 cubic feet and 32.6 inches for the RAV4. These are Honda-published figures for adjacent model-year vehicles, not an independent, direct measurement of the 2003 versions. Use them as context, then check actual seating comfort and cargo fit in the vehicles you are considering. Honda’s 2002 CR-V press kit

The same press kit describes the CR-V’s fold-and-tumble rear seats and rear cargo bucket. Honda says its Real Time 4WD system automatically distributes drive torque between the front and rear wheels in response to changing traction conditions; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance finding.
Fuel economy: compare the exact configuration
A directly comparable pair of 2003 EPA fuel-economy figures for matching CR-V and RAV4 configurations is not established here. Mileage can vary by drivetrain and transmission, and figures should be matched to the vehicle’s market and EPA label or test basis. Check the exact configuration in the current FuelEconomy.gov record or consult the vehicle’s original label rather than relying on an unqualified model-level number.

Reliability and the condition of the vehicle
The available figures do not identify a statistical reliability winner for these exact 2003 models. A model’s reputation cannot substitute for evidence about a particular vehicle that is now more than two decades old.
- Review maintenance records and investigate gaps or recurring repairs.
- Check for rust, accident damage, warning lights and signs of neglected maintenance.
- Have a qualified independent mechanic inspect the vehicle, including its drivetrain and tires.
- Compare the asking price with the vehicle’s condition, equipment and documented history.
Check recalls by VIN, not by model name
Toyota’s January 25, 2024 notice issued a “DO NOT DRIVE” advisory for certain 2004–2005 RAV4s in the United States affected by Takata airbag recalls. It does not establish that a 2003 RAV4 is covered. Check the VIN of any candidate vehicle for open recalls through Toyota’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall lookup; the notice says the remedy is free for vehicles covered by that advisory. Which one makes more sense?
Choose the 2003 CR-V if its documented power, historical IIHS front-test result or the Honda-published cabin measurements are priorities, and the specific vehicle checks out. Consider the 2003 RAV4 on its own merits, but do not assume it has the 2.4-liter engine or standard stability control Toyota introduced for 2004. For either SUV, base the final decision on the exact vehicle’s condition, equipment, maintenance evidence, price and VIN recall check.
