The Ford Crown Vic Interceptor concept was a 2002 show car based on the 2003 Ford Police Interceptor—not a production Crown Victoria model. Ford presented it at the New York International Auto Show to showcase police-focused styling and technology, including a 300-horsepower V-8 and specialized equipment. Its announced features describe the concept, not proof that they appeared on production cars.

What was the 2002 Ford Interceptor concept?

Ford’s March 28, 2002 announcement described the concept as a showcase for the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, the law-enforcement version of the Crown Victoria. The car was based on the 2003 Ford Police Interceptor. It is best identified by both its year and its Crown Victoria basis because “Ford Interceptor concept” also refers to a separate 2007 concept.

Ford framed the 2002 car as a demonstration of possible police-vehicle styling and technology. It was a concept vehicle, not a new production model or evidence that Ford sold a redesigned Crown Vic with this appearance. Ford’s announcement, reproduced by The Auto Channel, and the archived concept announcement document the show car.

What engine and performance did Ford announce?

Ford specified a modular 4.6-liter, four-valve V-8 rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque for the concept. These are Ford’s announced concept specifications; they should not be treated as a verified rating for every production Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The announcement does not establish independent performance-test results.

  • Die-cast metal body and chassis with rubber tires designed for display and collection.

What police equipment was part of the concept?

Ford’s feature list combined pursuit-oriented hardware, lighting, driver-focused details, and data recording. These were announced concept features rather than confirmation of production equipment or independently validated safety and performance outcomes.

  • Pursuit beam: Ford said it was intended to help an officer push a fleeing vehicle into a spin.
  • Lighting: HID headlamps, halogen strobe lights, search mirrors with integrated forward-facing lights, and an Edge light bar.
  • Body and wheels: 18-inch alloy wheels and crush-resistant bumpers with reinforced steel push bars.
  • Cabin: Front seats shaped to accommodate an officer’s duty belt.
  • Data recording: An Accident Data Recorder 2 “Blue Box,” which Ford said was developed with Ford Racing Technology, Delphi Automotive Systems, and CART.

The archived 2002 concept announcement preserves this equipment description. The available announcement does not establish that each item was offered on, or carried over to, production Police Interceptor vehicles.

How is it different from the production Crown Victoria Police Interceptor?

The concept and the production police sedan are related, but their specifications should not be collapsed into one. The concept’s styling and equipment list were presented for a show car; a production comparison would require model-year-specific documentation for the production vehicle. The sources documenting the concept do not provide a complete year-by-year comparison of bodywork, equipment, or engine ratings.

In particular, the 2002 concept’s exterior design is not evidence that the production Crown Victoria adopted that bodywork. Treat the concept’s features as announced for the show car unless a production-year source separately confirms an item.

What happened to the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor?

Ford’s successor announcements in 2010 introduced a new Police Interceptor sedan and, later that year, a Police Interceptor utility vehicle. Ford said production of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor would cease in late 2011; its police-vehicle history says the model was retired from service in 2012 as the next-generation Police Interceptors arrived.

This later timeline provides context for the name, but it does not mean the 2002 concept’s design became the successor’s styling.

Is the 2007 Ford Interceptor the same concept?

No. The 2007 Ford Interceptor concept is a separate vehicle. The shared “Interceptor” name can make search results ambiguous, so the Crown Victoria-related show car is most clearly described as the 2002 Ford Interceptor concept based on the 2003 Ford Police Interceptor. The archived 2002 entry identifies the Crown Vic-related concept; the 2007 vehicle should not be used as a source for its specifications or equipment.
