For ordinary street driving, a reported front-left caster reading of 5.7°—just 0.1° below the 5.8° lower limit quoted by the owner—is unlikely to matter by itself if the car tracks normally and has no unusual tire wear or steering symptoms. That quoted range has not been independently confirmed here as a Honda factory specification, and the reading alone does not prove a suspension part is bent. If the car pulls, feels different, wears tires abnormally, or has a history of wheel impact, have the alignment verified and the relevant components inspected before approving replacement parts.
What the S2000 owner reported
In a 2015 AnandTech Forums thread, the owner of an “01 S2000” reported 5.7° of front-left caster. The shop had given them a range of 5.8°–6.3° and reportedly could not bring the reading into that range, suggesting something might be bent. The shortfall from the quoted lower edge is 0.1°. The thread does not independently establish that range as Honda factory data, and it does not identify a damaged part. Read the owner’s report and discussion.
The owner later recalled that the wheel and rim had taken a hard parking-lot impact and had been damaged before body-shop repair. That makes a careful inspection reasonable, but it does not establish that a suspension component was bent.
What caster affects
Caster is an alignment angle associated with the steering axis. In general, more caster increases steering self-return and feedback, and it can add negative camber as the wheels turn. Those effects are more relevant when exploring cornering limits than during routine street driving. The forum replies include informal, sometimes differing descriptions of caster’s effects on steering return, steering feel, cross-caster, and track handling. They are practitioner opinions, not controlled tests or a Honda repair procedure.
Decide what to do based on symptoms and use
Normal street use, with no symptoms
If the car tracks normally, the steering feels as expected, and the tires show no unusual wear, the reported 0.1° shortfall alone is not a reason to assume a part needs replacement. Keep an eye on how the car behaves rather than treating one reading as a diagnosis.

Pulling, unusual tire wear, or changed steering
Ask a qualified alignment technician to verify the readings and inspect the relevant suspension components. Describe the symptoms and ask the shop to identify the specific measured defect that supports any proposed repair. Caster alone does not say which part, if any, needs replacement.
Known impact or performance use
The recalled wheel and rim damage is a sensible reason to request a careful inspection, even if the car has no obvious symptoms. For track or performance use, caster’s effects on dynamic camber and steering feel may matter more; judge it alongside the full alignment setup and the car’s intended use. The thread’s street-versus-track observations are informal, not quantitative test results.

Before authorizing suspension parts
- Ask for the complete alignment readings and the range the shop is using. Treat 5.8°–6.3° as the range reported by this owner, not as independently verified Honda factory data.
- Describe any pulling, tire wear, steering changes, handling changes, or known impact history.
- Request an inspection and a clear explanation of the measured damage or defect behind any recommended replacement.
- Decide on repairs from the verified diagnosis, not from the 5.7° figure alone.
Alignment concepts are also covered in an instructional text by Halderman, but the opened material does not give a 2001 S2000 caster specification: Halderman’s chassis-systems sample. A separate aftermarket lift-product manual advises a professional alignment check because caster can vary between vehicles and sides; that advice is product-specific, not S2000 guidance: Superlift installation instructions.
