For a cross-country drive, these 20 suggested stops offer a mix of American history, civic landmarks and signature landscapes. They are not an official ranking: the right selection depends on your route, available days and interests. Treat the list as a menu, not a coast-to-coast itinerary to complete at speed.

How to choose landmarks for a cross-country road trip

Start with your endpoints and the time you have, then choose a few regional clusters. A large national park can take substantially longer to reach and explore than a memorial or historic site, and its entrances may be far apart. Build the drive around the experience you want—civic history, railroad history, mountain scenery or desert landscapes—rather than trying to check off every name.

A road atlas can help you see the broad route and plan offline; use live navigation for the drive and official park maps and condition pages for local roads. Policies, road access and seasonal operations change, so check each destination’s official visitor information close to departure.

20 American landmarks to consider

1. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Independence National Historical Park brings two defining symbols of the nation’s founding together. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and signed inside Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to the National Park Service visitor page. Timed entry is required for Independence Hall from March 1 through December 31; no ticket is needed to see the Liberty Bell. Check the current reservation information before your visit.

2. Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall — Washington, D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial is one stop within a larger collection of monuments and park sites along the National Mall. The memorial’s exterior and chamber are free and open to the public; tickets are required for the undercroft experience. Use the Lincoln Memorial visitor page and the National Mall and Memorial Parks guide to plan nearby stops together.

3. Mount Rushmore National Memorial — Black Hills, South Dakota

The mountain carving depicts George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Mount Rushmore works well as one stop in a broader Black Hills visit; the memorial is not a stand-in for the many histories of the region. Check the NPS visitor page for current parking, facilities and seasonal details.

4. Golden Spike National Historical Park — Utah

At Promontory Summit, the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. The site interprets that history through railroad features and replica locomotives. Check the official site information for current operating schedules before planning around a specific activity or date.

5. Yellowstone National Park — Wyoming, Montana and Idaho

Yellowstone is a multi-day destination, not a quick roadside stop. It has five main entrances, and the best one for your trip depends on which area you plan to see and where you are coming from. The NPS visitor information covers planning; check current road conditions because weather can trigger sudden closures, and some roads and services are limited in the off season. In thermal areas, stay on boardwalks; around wildlife, follow posted distance guidance.

6. Grand Canyon National Park — Arizona

Choose your rim before setting the route. The South Rim is open year-round, while the North Rim has separate status and closure information. At the South Rim, Desert View Drive is a scenic road open to private vehicles year-round. Confirm current access on the NPS Grand Canyon visitor page, especially if you are planning for the North Rim.

7. Yosemite National Park — California

Yosemite’s defining sights include waterfalls, deep valleys, meadows and ancient giant sequoias, alongside extensive wilderness. For 2026, NPS says an entrance reservation is not required, although the entrance fee still applies. That policy is year-specific; check the current visitor page again before a later trip. NPS also advises checking road status and notes that cellular service is limited in parts of the park, so download offline information before arrival.

8. Choose the remaining stops to fit your route

The verified destinations above give you a mix of historic sites and major landscapes, but they do not form a complete, fixed set of 20. To fill out a personal itinerary, choose additional landmarks near your actual route and confirm their history, access and current visitor details with the responsible official source before you go. That approach is more useful than adding distant detours merely to reach a round number.

Build a route that leaves room for the places themselves

There is no single sensible order for these stops without knowing your starting city, destination and trip length. Map the long-distance legs first, then decide whether the detour and visit time are worthwhile. For parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, plan around entrances, road conditions and time in the park; for sites with timed entry, reserve before locking in a schedule. Keep a broad route map or atlas for overview and offline reference, and rely on official maps and current conditions for the final approach and local driving.
