The Chevrolet 454 SS was a factory performance package for the two-wheel-drive C1500, not a separate truck platform. In regular-cab, short-bed form, it paired a 7.4-liter V8 with street-focused equipment. Its most important change came after 1990: the later trucks gained more power, a four-speed automatic with overdrive, and a 4.10 axle ratio.
“Forgotten by time” is a useful editorial description, not a measurable claim about public recognition. The 454 SS arrived before later performance pickups that became better-known, but the records cited here do not measure how widely it is remembered.
What the 454 SS was
Chevrolet built the 454 SS as a sport-truck package beginning with Silverado trim. The 1993 order guide identifies it as a C1500 two-wheel-drive pickup. MotorTrend describes the format as a regular cab with a short box. The name referred to the engine’s displacement: Chevrolet listed a 7.4-liter V8, equivalent to 454 cubic inches. GM Heritage describes its Vehicle Information Kits and archive scope; the truck-specific specifications below come from the period documents.
That combination made the truck a focused street-performance pickup rather than an all-purpose modern sport truck. Its factory equipment included a large-displacement V8, a performance-oriented axle ratio, wide tires, and a front stabilizer bar.

What changed from 1990 to 1993
The clearest dividing line is between the 1990 model and the 1991–1993 run. MotorTrend reports the 1990 truck with 230 horsepower, 385 lb-ft of torque, a three-speed automatic, and a 3.73 axle. It reports that the 1991 model received 255 hp and 405 lb-ft, a four-speed automatic with overdrive, and a 4.10 axle. Chevrolet’s 1992 factory kit confirms the later output and axle ratio. The 1990 figures and changeover date are secondary-source specifications; the supplied factory records cover 1992 and 1993, not 1990 or 1991.
| Model years | Engine output | Transmission | Axle ratio | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1990 | 230 hp; 385 lb-ft | Three-speed automatic | 3.73 | MotorTrend secondary specifications |
| 1991–1993 | 255 hp; 405 lb-ft | Four-speed automatic with overdrive | 4.10 | MotorTrend reports the change from 1991; Chevrolet’s 1992 kit confirms 255 net hp and 405 lb-ft, and its 4.10 axle |
Chevrolet’s 1992 kit rates the engine at 255 net hp at 4,000 rpm and 405 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm. Those are the period manufacturer’s stated figures for the 1992 model, not a modern test result.

What the 1992 factory equipment included
The 1992 Chevrolet Truck Vehicle Information Kit, revised in December 1991, documents the package’s street-oriented hardware and several year-specific details:
- A 7.4-liter fuel-injected V8, four-speed automatic transmission, and 4.10 axle.
- P275/60R15 tires and chrome-styled 15-by-7-inch wheels; the kit specifies five tires.
- A front stabilizer bar, black air dam with fog lamps, and dual exhaust.
- Front disc and rear drum brakes with rear-wheel anti-lock braking.
- Air conditioning, power windows and locks, and bucket seats with a console in Garnet cloth.
- Black, red, and white exterior colors listed for 1992.
These are documented 1992 details; they should not automatically be treated as equipment or color choices for all four model years.

How many were made?
Published totals differ, and neither figure here is a period GM production table. MotorTrend gives an approximate total of 17,000 trucks and says roughly three-quarters were 1990 models. CLASSIC.COM reports 16,953 across the four model years. Treat both as secondary-source counts rather than an exact, factory-verified production total.

What to check when buying one
MotorTrend notes that the 454 SS can be cloned. Badges and appearance alone therefore do not establish that a truck is an authentic factory example. For a specific truck, compare its VIN and available build documentation with its year-appropriate drivetrain, then inspect body condition and ask for a clear account of modifications. Those are practical buyer checks, not a factory authenticity checklist.
Older C/K trucks benefit from broad parts availability through catalogs and salvage sources, according to MotorTrend. That does not establish that every 454-specific component is easy to find or provide evidence of particular failure rates. Because specifications vary by year, a repair reference should explicitly cover the truck’s model year and 7.4-liter engine; a general manual and a factory service manual are not interchangeable descriptions of coverage.
