A secondary technical compilation lists it at 583 cc, while Ducati’s separate 600 TT2 racing model is listed at 597 cc; those figures describe different motorcycles and should not be conflated.
What is the 1981 Ducati 600 SL Pantah?
The 600 SL was a road motorcycle in Ducati’s Pantah family. Ducati’s Back to Classics account places its market introduction in 1981. A separate Pantah model history says it was shown at the end of 1980, with the first examples available in early 1981. A technical compilation gives the model-year span as 1981–84.
The “Desmo” name refers to Ducati’s desmodromic valve actuation: the valves are mechanically opened and closed rather than relying on springs alone. Ducati’s historical account describes the Pantah’s single overhead camshafts as driven by toothed rubber belts. It also identifies the two-parallel-tube trellis frame as a new design introduced with the preceding 500 SL.
600 SL Pantah specifications
The engine dimensions and compression ratio below come from a secondary technical-data compilation, which cites Ian Fallon’s Ducati Belt-Drive Two-Valve Twins, Restoration and Modification, Mick Walker’s Ducati Twins Restoration, and Motorrad Gebrauchtreport 14/1993. They are not presented here as independently verified factory-manual specifications.

Homologation listing and tyre sizes
A 2009 Federazione Motociclistica Italiana listing identifies the 600 SL Pantah as a 1981 model and records homologation reference “OM 50017 EST01 del 17.08.81.” The same document lists a 3.25 x 18 front rim with a 100/90 tyre and a 4.00 H 18 rear rim with either a 110/90 or 120/80 tyre. These are the dimensions in that federation document, not a guarantee of the correct fitment for every market or surviving bike; check the motorcycle’s documentation and configuration before choosing tyres.
How many 600 SL Pantahs were made?
A Pantah production table attributes its figures to Motociclismo d’Epoca, No. 8/9 (2003). It reports 2,949 600 SL Pantahs produced across 1980–84, including 1,094 in 1981. This is a secondary-source production figure, not a factory-ledger count.

The 600 TT2 was a separate racing derivative based on the standard Pantah, not another specification for the road-going 600 SL. Ducati’s 600 TT2 heritage page lists the racer at 597 cc, 78 hp at 10,500 rpm, 220 km/h maximum speed and 140 kg dry weight. Those are TT2 figures and do not establish the 600 SL’s power, speed or weight.

What to check when identifying or maintaining one
- Confirm the model and year from the motorcycle’s paperwork and identifying numbers; a historical model page or general Pantah specification table does not authenticate an individual machine.
- For workshop information, use a manual whose coverage explicitly includes the 600 SL and the relevant year and market. The sources cited here do not establish a particular factory manual listing.
- Because the camshafts are belt-driven, verify belt fitment and service requirements against model-specific documentation and the motorcycle’s history. No service interval is established by the historical information above.
- Confirm tyre application against the individual motorcycle and its market documentation rather than treating the 2009 federation listing as universal.
