A 1987 Buick GNX sold for $225,000 at Bring a Trailer on July 6, 2026, and another sold for $202,000 on August 7, 2025. Those two auction results show that individual GNXs can bring more than $200,000, but they do not establish that the car is generally worth over $250,000 today. The GNX is a scarce, one-year model, with 547 examples reported; a specific car’s mileage, originality, condition, modifications, records, and provenance matter.
What recent GNX auction sales show
The available results are individual sales, not a market-wide appraisal or a price guide by condition and mileage. The cars also differed in mileage and the details disclosed in their listings.
| Sale | Reported mileage | Price | Details noted in the listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bring a Trailer, July 6, 2026 | 8,000 miles | $225,000 | Described as car number 22 of 547; the listing notes a repaint. |
| Bring a Trailer, August 7, 2025 | 19,000 miles | $202,000 | The listing describes a window sticker, owner’s manual, and service records. |
The 2026 result is $23,000 higher than the 2025 result, but two sales are not enough to establish a reliable trend. The cars’ mileage, originality, condition, documentation, and sale dates differ, and the available evidence does not quantify how much any one of those factors changes value. Neither result supports calling $250,000 a representative price.
Why the GNX is rare
The GNX was a 1987-only performance model based on the Buick Regal Grand National and developed with ASC/McLaren. Hagerty’s November 19, 2025 1987 Buick Regal valuation report gives production as 547, a figure also used in the cited auction listings. Those listings describe all 547 as black.

- True-to-scale detail
- Die-cast metal body
Rarity helps explain collector interest, but it does not set a fixed price for every car. Two examples with the same model year can differ meaningfully in mileage, paint and body originality, mechanical condition, modifications, and the quality of their records.
What distinguishes a GNX from a Grand National
A GNX is not simply another name for a Grand National. The auction descriptions identify GNX-specific body details, revised suspension, special instrumentation, and a turbocharged, intercooled 3.8-liter V6 paired with a four-speed automatic. These are listing-based descriptions; the sources available here do not include an authoritative Buick factory specification sheet.

Documentation can also help establish what a particular car is and what accompanies it. A RM Sotheby’s 2022 Hershey listing identifies a GNX as number 149 of 547 and describes accompanying documents. A separate Bring a Trailer listing for an original-owner, 1,190-mile GNX notes original paperwork and a numbered hardcover book. These listings illustrate what may be present with an individual car; they do not establish a dollar premium for those items.

- Mileage: Confirm the odometer reading and look for records that support the car’s mileage history.
- Originality and condition: Ask whether the paint, body, interior, and mechanical components are original, repaired, or replaced. Record any repaint history; the 8,000-mile car sold in July 2026 was noted as repainted.
- Modifications: Identify changes to the engine, suspension, or other components and determine whether documentation or original parts are included.
- Records and provenance: Review service records, sales paperwork, title and ownership history, and any other documents that connect the car’s identity and history.
- Included materials: Note whether the window sticker, owner’s manual, spare parts, or other factory-related documents and materials accompany the car. Their presence is a comparison point, not a quantified price adjustment.
- Sale context: Compare the date, venue, and disclosed condition of each sale. A public auction result is what one buyer paid for one car in that sale, not a guaranteed value for another GNX.
Hagerty’s retrieved November 2025 Regal report provides production context but does not provide a GNX-specific valuation table in the information available here. Without a condition- and mileage-specific valuation source, the cited auction prices are useful reference points, not a complete appraisal.
