Classic DMC lists the 1981 VIN sequence as 000500–007199 and reports that 6,700 cars were built that model year. The VIN identifies model year; the date plate in the driver’s door jamb identifies build date, which can fall in a different calendar year.
How to identify a 1981 DeLorean
Check the tenth character of the car’s original VIN. For DeLoreans, B denotes 1981, C denotes 1982, and D denotes 1983, according to Classic DeLorean Motor Company’s buyer’s guide. Compare the VIN on the car with its paperwork, and investigate any inconsistency rather than relying on a seller’s description alone.
The VIN model year is not necessarily the calendar year shown on the driver’s door-jamb build-date plate. Classic DMC notes that 1982 production began in December 1981, so a car built late in 1981 can still be a 1982 model. For an independent decoding resource, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes its vPIC platform as a manufacturer-reported information and VIN-decoding service for model years 1981 onward; it does not replace checking the car’s own VIN and documents.
1981 VIN range and production
Classic DMC gives the 1981 VIN range as 000500 through 007199 and says production ended at the end of November. Its buyer’s guide reports 6,700 cars built in 1981. That is the specialist company’s reported production figure, not an independently audited count.

The sequence began before the first completed car. Classic DMC says factory production records show VINs 500, 501, 502, and 503 starting down the production line on December 17, 1980, at the Belfast-area factory. VIN 500 was completed on January 18, 1981. These dates help explain why a production timeline does not map neatly onto the model-year label.
What to inspect before buying a 1981 DeLorean
Age and maintenance history matter more than the model year alone. Classic DMC’s buyer guide specifically flags age-sensitive components that may need attention even on a low-mileage car. Treat these as inspection prompts, not proof that a particular car has a defect.

- Tires: Check their age and condition, not just tread depth; low mileage does not establish that tires are recent.
- Belts, hoses, and radiator: Look for evidence of replacement and inspect their current condition.
- Coolant and other fluids: Ask when they were last changed and whether maintenance is documented. On manual-transmission cars, check the brake hydraulic and clutch fluids as part of the service history.
- Service records: Review invoices and dates for routine work and repairs, and compare them with the seller’s account of the car.
A qualified classic-car mechanic can inspect the individual vehicle and help distinguish deferred maintenance from more serious concerns. No general production-year claim can substitute for that car-specific assessment.
Stainless steel and painted examples
Classic DMC says DeLoreans left the factory with bare stainless-steel body panels; factory paint was not standard. The buyer guide also notes a few early cars painted by DMC in the United States. A painted example therefore warrants a closer look at its history and provenance rather than an assumption that it is an ordinary factory finish.

Owner references and parts
For model-specific documentation, Classic DMC lists a buyer’s guide, a reproduction factory parts manual, and a replacement-parts catalog. These are specialist reference and supplier resources; check the seller directly for current editions, stock, and availability.
