The Bugatti Type 23 was a longer-wheelbase member of the Type 13 Brescia family, not simply another name for the Type 13. The Bugatti Trust lists its wheelbase as 2.55 m (100.4 in), compared with 2.4 m for the Type 22 and 2.0 m for the Type 13. Engine details and racing achievements commonly associated with the Brescia family need more care: the available reference groups several engine variants together, and it was Type 13 cars—not Type 23s—that took the first four places at Brescia in 1921.
What is a Bugatti Type 23 Brescia?
The Type 23 was one of the applications of the Type 13 concept at a different vehicle length. Bugatti’s history describes the Type 13 design as the basis for related types with other lengths, including Types 15, 17, 22 and 23. The Bugatti Trust groups Types 13, 22 and 23 under the “16-valve Brescia, or Brescia Modifié” family reference. Its approximate date range for that combined reference is 1914–1926; it does not establish Type 23-only production dates.
The longer chassis is the clearest published distinction for the Type 23. It was part of the same broader Brescia technical family, but the family label should not obscure the differences among individual types or imply that every surviving car has identical equipment.
How is the Bugatti Type 23 different from the Type 13?
The Bugatti Trust’s 2014 reference gives these wheelbase figures for the three related types. It notes that other references sometimes give 2.417 m for the Type 22 and 1.967 m for the Type 13, so the figures should be read as reference values rather than universal measurements for every car.

| Model | Wheelbase in the Bugatti Trust reference | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Type 13 | 2.0 m | Shorter Type 13 Brescia design |
| Type 22 | 2.4 m | Longer-wheelbase family member |
| Type 23 | 2.55 m (100.4 in) | Longest of the three wheelbases listed |
The Trust also lists a shared track of 1.15 m and approximate chassis weight of 610 kg for the combined family reference, while cautioning that dimensions and chassis weight can vary by configuration. These are not Type 23-specific guarantees. The longer wheelbase supports describing the Type 23 as a longer-chassis derivative; the sources do not supply a comparable set of exact overall body lengths for all three models.
What engine did the Bugatti Type 23 have?
The Bugatti Trust’s Type 13/22/23 family reference lists four cylinders, four valves per cylinder, a single overhead camshaft and capacities of 1368, 1453 and 1496 cc. It gives approximate output as 30+ bhp, with one or two Zenith carburetors and one or two magnetos, usually SEV. These are grouped figures across the reference, not a single universal Type 23 specification. An individual car’s exact engine configuration needs to be established from its own documentation.

Bugatti’s 2021 historical account discusses a 1.45-liter engine and revs up to 4,500 rpm in its account of Type 13 development and racing specification. Those figures describe that Type 13 context and should not automatically be assigned to every Type 23.
What happened at the 1921 Brescia race?
Bugatti’s account of the 1921 Gran Premio delle Vetturette says Type 13 cars finished in the first four places. It names Ernest Jules Friedrich as the winner, followed by Pierre de Vizcaya, Michel Baccoli and Pierre Marco. The Bugatti Trust independently identifies Ernst Friderich as the winning Type 13 driver and records that its collection holds the winner’s plaque, awarded on September 8, 1921. The two sources spell the driver’s name differently; neither account attributes the victory to a Type 23.

Bugatti describes the race course as 60 laps of 17.3 km each. The Trust explains that longer-wheelbase touring derivatives became known as Brescia Bugattis after the Type 13’s victory. That history explains the family name; it is not evidence that the Type 23 itself won the 1921 race.
How many Bugatti Type 23 cars were made?
No Type 23-only production total is established in the cited sources. Bugatti reports approximately 2,000 Type 13 cars sold, with Type 13 production at Molsheim through 1926; that number is specifically for the Type 13 and must not be used as a Type 23 count. The Trust’s approximate 1914–1926 period applies to its combined Type 13/22/23 family reference, not to a documented Type 23 start or end date.

What details help identify a Type 23?
The Bugatti Trust lists these features for the combined 16-valve family, not as a standalone Type 23 checklist:
- H-section front axle and unusual front brakes.
- Carburetor on the left and exhaust on the right.
- Wire wheels; the reference lists an original tire size of 710 x 90 and a modern fitment of 4.50 x 19.
The Trust also notes component overlap with other types, including similarities between 1924–26 Brescia axles and radiators and those of the Type 30. No single listed feature proves a particular car’s identity. Chassis-level documentation is needed to assess an individual car, especially where restoration or component changes may be involved.
