The headline’s “1,600 miles” rounds the reported reading, while “40 years” rounds the reported 42-year period out of use. The result is a historical sale, not a current valuation.
What happened to the Honda CBX barn find?
Burns & Co Auctions offered the motorcycle as Lot 11 in its classic and collectible motorcycle auction in Bayswater, Victoria, on September 9, 2024. The auction listing describes a 1979 Honda CBX1000 with a 1047 cc inline-six and calls its condition very low-kilometre and excellent original. New Atlas reported that the bike sold for AUD 45,500, or USD 30,300, in an update after the auction. The auction-house listing confirms the lot and scheduled event, but the reported final price comes from New Atlas.
New Atlas says the vendor acquired the motorcycle from an estate sale, that it was registered for its first three years, and that it then sat in a shed from 1982 until 2017. The same article says it was cleaned but not started before careful recommissioning. That account is the published history; the auction listing does not independently establish the storage period or odometer history. Burns & Co’s Lot 11 listing corroborates the model, displacement, scheduled date and condition description.
Why this CBX drew collector attention
A landmark six-cylinder road bike
The 1979 CBX’s defining feature is its 1047 cc, 24-valve, double-overhead-cam inline-six. New Atlas describes the first model as a naked motorcycle and says it was the world’s fastest road bike in 1979. That period-ranking claim is the publication’s account, rather than a separately verified test result here. New Atlas also reports a standing quarter-mile time of 11.4 seconds and production of 37,000 CBXs; neither figure was independently confirmed against original manufacturer or test records.

Originality, completeness and provenance
The sale story emphasizes the bike’s reported originality and the long storage history. Original parts, especially the exhaust, are part of New Atlas’s discussion of collector interest. That does not make an original exhaust a universal requirement for a high sale price: condition, completeness, provenance, odometer confidence and the buyer’s assessment all affect an individual result.
New Atlas distinguishes the 1979 naked CBX from later versions described as fully faired tourers with revised brakes and suspension. The distinction matters when comparing motorcycles: a later touring model is not automatically a like-for-like comparison for this first-year example.

What the AUD 45,500 result does—and does not—tell you
The reported AUD 45,500 (USD 30,300) is the result for this particular motorcycle at this particular 2024 auction. New Atlas also cites selected Mecum CBX results from 2020–22, including a USD 49,500 sale in 2022, but those older examples are not a current market valuation or a sufficient basis for a reliable price range. A comparison needs genuinely similar examples and attention to originality, condition after storage, documentation, and the presence of original components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to know before recommissioning a stored CBX
A low odometer reading and a reported long period in storage do not establish that a motorcycle is ready to ride. New Atlas says this example was carefully recommissioned, but does not provide a complete inspection checklist or enough detail to generalize its work to another bike.

For owners working on a 1979–80 CBX, Helm lists Honda’s paper 1979–80 CBX Shop Manual, part number 6142202, covering repair, maintenance, diagnosis and adjustment procedures. The International CBX Owners Association manuals page also lists factory shop and parts manuals for 1979–80 twin-shock models. A manual is a reference, not a substitute for a competent inspection of a motorcycle that has spent years unused.
