The 1977 AMC Gremlin combined a refreshed front end and taillights with a larger rear lift window and a folding rear seat. AMC’s model-year brochure lists a 96-inch wheelbase, 21-gallon fuel tank and nearly 27 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded. These are manufacturer-published figures and descriptions, not independent measurements.
What changed for the 1977 AMC Gremlin?
AMC’s 1977 full-line brochure describes a fresh new look, including a new front-end treatment and distinctive taillights. It also highlights a larger rear lift window, which AMC said was intended to make loading easier.
The brochure presents the Gremlin X as a sporty option. It does not, in the material cited here, establish a complete list of 1977 trim or powertrain combinations.

How much cargo space does a 1977 Gremlin have?
AMC advertised nearly 27 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seat is folded down. The brochure’s wording is: “The back seat folds down to provide a handy, roomy cargo space of nearly 27 cubic feet.” The larger lift window was also presented as a loading convenience. The cargo figure is AMC’s brochure claim, not an independently verified modern measurement.
Which reference is useful for a 1977 Gremlin restoration?
For diagnosis or restoration research, Books4Cars lists a 1977 three-volume AMC shop service repair manual set covering Gremlin, Pacer, Hornet and Matador. Before buying, verify the specific volumes, completeness, and whether the coverage suits the car’s configuration. The listing establishes that the retailer describes the set; it does not establish current stock.
