The 1973 Volvo 1800ES was the final-year version of Volvo’s 1800 sports-car line, reshaped with an extended roof and a glass rear tailgate to make it more useful without abandoning its 2+2 coupe identity. Volvo records 8,078 ES cars built in total. It is best understood as a sports wagon or estate-like coupe—not as an unrelated wagon, and not as a car for which the available evidence supports a modern road-test verdict.
What was the Volvo 1800ES?
The 1800ES was Volvo’s practical reworking of the 1800. The company says it retained the other 1800 models’ underlying technology while gaining a newly designed rear end. Volvo describes its longer roofline as giving the car a profile more reminiscent of a wagon. Those are the manufacturer’s retrospective descriptions, rather than independent reviewer judgments. That combination is why “sports wagon” or “estate-like coupe” fits better than treating it as a conventional station wagon. It kept the 1800’s sporty two-plus-two layout, but a longer roof and large rear glass made the body more useful for carrying luggage.
How did the ES differ from the earlier 1800 coupe?
The central change was practical rather than a documented mechanical overhaul: the roof extended farther back and the rear body was redesigned around a glass tailgate. The rear seat folded to open a longer cargo area. Volvo’s 1973 English brochure described the resulting luggage capacity as almost that of an estate car. Volvo’s 1973 1800ES brochure

The production timeline also distinguishes the ES from the earlier coupe. Volvo says the ES was presented in autumn 1971 and made for the 1972 and 1973 model years. Both the ES and another 1800 version were made in 1972; in 1973, only the ES remained in production. It was therefore the final expression of the 1800 line, not a separate wagon introduced after that line had disappeared. Volvo Cars’ historical 1800ES page
What did the 1973 model offer mechanically?
Volvo’s factory information describes a 1,986 cc, four-cylinder, overhead-valve engine and hydraulic disc brakes on all four wheels. Transmission choices listed by Volvo are a four-speed manual with electrical overdrive or a three-speed automatic. Volvo Cars’ historical 1800ES page

For output, the period 1973 brochure gives 135 SAE horsepower for the B20E engine. Volvo’s historical page gives a broader 124–135 bhp range, reflecting differences among market specifications and conventions; the brochure figure should not be read as universal for every 1973-market car. The same English brochure lists approximate kerb weight at 1,190 kg. Volvo cautions that country-specific specifications and equipment can differ. Volvo’s 1973 1800ES brochure
How practical was the 1800ES?
With the rear seat folded, Volvo’s 1973 brochure quotes about 1 cubic metre (35 cubic feet) of luggage capacity. That figure explains the appeal of the ES’s long-roof format: it offered substantially more cargo utility than the coupe-like silhouette initially suggests, while still seating four in a 2+2 arrangement when the rear seat was in use. The brochure also reports 1973 changes and equipment including strengthened doors for side-impact protection, a modified windscreen-wiper sweep, a new grille, larger direction indicators, a new rear light cluster, a revised steering wheel and dashboard surrounds, and updated heating and ventilation. These are details in the English brochure, not a guarantee that every national-market car received identical equipment. Volvo’s 1973 1800ES brochure
Why did Volvo stop making it?
Volvo says increasingly rigorous U.S. safety requirements were a reason it ended 1800ES production: the company judged the changes needed to comply too expensive. That is Volvo’s retrospective explanation, not an independently established assessment of every factor behind the decision. The manufacturer records total production at 8,078 cars. Does the 1973 Volvo 1800ES deserve a “review” verdict?
The available source material establishes the car’s design, factory specifications and brochure-described equipment, but does not provide a verified period road test or firsthand driving evidence. So a fair assessment is about the idea and its documented execution: Volvo adapted its sports-car line into a more cargo-capable 2+2 while preserving the underlying 1800 technology. Claims about how it drives, performs against rivals, or compares in reliability would need evidence beyond these sources.
