1967 Ducati 125 Cadet/4: Specs, Variants and Identification

The Ducati 125 Cadet/4 is a short-lived 121 cc-class four-stroke with a pushrod OHV single and four-speed gearbox. Learn how it differs from the two-stroke Cadet and Lusso, and why tire fitment should be verified on the individual bike.

The 1967 Ducati 125 Cadet/4 is a small four-stroke motorcycle with a pushrod-operated overhead-valve single-cylinder engine and a four-speed gearbox. It shared some cycle parts with Ducati’s two-stroke Cadet, but its engine was distinct. Its precise production end date is disputed, and published tire dimensions conflict, so a particular bike’s records and components matter more than a generic specification listing.

What is the 1967 Ducati 125 Cadet/4?

The Cadet/4 is a 121 cc-class Ducati single. RM Sotheby’s describes it as the final pushrod overhead-valve Ducati single and dates it to 1967 and 1968. A separate specialist chronology says it was introduced in 1967 and ended production that year. Those accounts do not settle the exact production run, so it is safest to call the Cadet/4 a short-lived 1967-era model rather than assign it a definitive end date. RM Sotheby’s auction listing; Ducati Singles Restoration model chronology.

1967 Ducati 125 Cadet/4 specifications

Item Published specification
Engine Single-cylinder, four-stroke, overhead-valve (OHV), with pushrod valve actuation, according to RM Sotheby’s and the Ducati Singles Restoration specification table.
Displacement 121 cc in RM Sotheby’s description; 121.340 cc in the specialist specification table.
Bore and stroke 53 × 55 mm, according to the specialist specification table; not corroborated by a factory manual in the cited sources.
Compression ratio 8.4:1, according to the specialist specification table; not corroborated by a factory manual in the cited sources.
Transmission Four-speed, according to RM Sotheby’s.
Frame Double-cradle tubular steel, described by RM Sotheby’s as similar to the 125 Bronco.
Electrical system RM Sotheby’s describes a flywheel alternator charging a 6-volt, 13.5 Ah battery, with an electrical system shared with the 160 Monza Junior. Confirm the wiring on the individual motorcycle rather than treating this auction description as a wiring diagram.
Tires Published dimensions conflict; see the tire section below.

What does the “4” mean?

The “4” refers to the four-speed gearbox. It is also a useful reminder that the Cadet/4 is not just the two-stroke Cadet with a different badge: the four-stroke version has a distinct engine even though some cycle parts were shared. RM Sotheby’s.

How is the Cadet/4 different from the two-stroke Cadet?

Use engine architecture and identifying records, not the shared chassis appearance alone. The Cadet/4 has a four-stroke OHV engine with two overhead valves. RM Sotheby’s says the engine was based on an earlier OHV unit but had revised bore, stroke and cylinder-head design; its listing also notes that the spark plug moved to the right and the valves were parallel rather than opposed. Many cycle parts were shared with the two-stroke Cadet, so frame or running-gear similarities do not establish which engine version a motorcycle has. RM Sotheby’s model description.

Cadet/4 and Cadet/4 Lusso differences

RM Sotheby’s describes the Lusso as closely related to the standard Cadet/4, with an improved front fork, a sporting headlight and larger tires. Because equipment or components may have changed during decades of ownership and restoration, assess the fork, lighting and wheel specification together with the motorcycle’s records rather than relying on a single visible detail. RM Sotheby’s.

What tire sizes are listed for a 1967 Cadet/4?

The available records disagree. RM Sotheby’s lists a 2.25-inch front tire and a 2.50 × 18-inch rear tire for 1967. An Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport table identifies the DM 125 Cadet 4 as a 1967 model, type approval OM 5077, and lists 2.50 × 18 front and 2.75 × 18 rear. Neither listing alone proves what belongs on every surviving example. RM Sotheby’s; Italian Ministry table, annex to protocol 304-DIV2C, 15 September 2009.

Manuals and restoration identification

Ducati’s current documentation pages describe its general routes to manuals, parts catalogues and service support, but the cited guidance does not establish that a digital manual for this 1967 model is currently available. A specialist retailer lists English- and Italian-language Cadet 4 owner’s manual booklets and related brochures; a retail listing by itself does not verify that a booklet is an original factory document or that a particular reproduction is complete. Ducati manuals; Ducati service and maintenance; MotoManuali catalogue.

For restoration or parts identification, record the frame and engine numbers and compare them with a period parts book or a marque specialist’s records before ordering components. RM Sotheby’s gives frame DM125C4/01961 and engine DM125/50488 for one auctioned motorcycle; those are identifiers for that example, not universal Cadet/4 numbers. The cited sources do not establish service intervals, torque figures, part numbers or a complete restoration parts list.
