Its documented powerplant was a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 V12 that GM Heritage says Enzo Ferrari contributed to the project. Calling it a “supercar” captures the car’s ambition, not a documented production classification or measured performance record.
What was the Pontiac Pegasus?
GM Heritage Collection describes the Pegasus as a “design concept” study developed under the direction of William L. Mitchell, then GM’s design vice president. The car was built from a production 1970 Pontiac Firebird rather than engineered as a separate production model.

That distinction matters: the available official description documents a styling and engineering exercise, not a Pontiac model sold through dealers. No production run, customer version or Pegasus-specific catalog is established in the source.
The Ferrari V12 connection
GM Heritage identifies the engine as a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 V12 and states that Enzo Ferrari contributed it to the project. The engine’s presence gave the Pontiac an extraordinary mechanical centerpiece and explains why the Pegasus remains such an unusual footnote in American concept-car history.

How Pontiac and Ferrari parts were combined
The Pegasus was not simply a Firebird with a Ferrari engine installed. GM Heritage lists a deliberately mixed component package:
Rank #2
- Large Approx. 9.5” replicas
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts, with opening doors and engine compartment on some models
- Full functioning steering Four- wheel suspension Adjustable seat backs on some models Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
- Mounted on display stand for collectors
- Detailed die-cast precision model
| System | Documented component | Source or role |
|---|---|---|
| Base vehicle | Production 1970 Pontiac Firebird | Pontiac/GM donor for the design study |
| Engine | Ferrari 365 GTB/4 V12 | Contributed to the project by Enzo Ferrari, according to GM Heritage |
| Transmission | Ferrari five-speed | Paired with the Ferrari V12 |
| Rear axle | GM posi-traction unit | American driveline component |
| Brakes | Corvette four-wheel disc brakes | GM performance hardware |
| Wheels | Borrani wire wheels | Italian wire-wheel component |
| Exhaust | Ferrari exhaust and mufflers | Ferrari-sourced hardware |
| Instruments | Ferrari instrument-panel gauges | Ferrari-sourced cockpit details |
Ferrari-inspired styling on a Firebird foundation
The Ferrari influence extended beyond the drivetrain. The front end, grille and fender vents drew inspiration from Ferrari designs, giving the Firebird-based body a more exotic visual language. The result combined Pontiac’s proportions and underlying structure with Italian cues and hardware.

Because Mitchell directed the project, it is more precise to say the Pegasus was designed under his direction than to claim he was its sole designer. The official wording establishes leadership, not exclusive authorship.

Why the Pegasus is easy to misclassify
It was a concept, not a showroom model
The Pegasus had no documented production release. Its significance comes from the engineering and styling choices made for a design study, not from sales volume, homologation or a factory model range.
“Supercar” is an editorial description
The Ferrari V12, Ferrari transmission and Italian components make the term understandable for modern readers. However, the available GM account does not classify the car as a supercar and provides no test data to support a performance ranking.

Its specifications remain incomplete
GM Heritage does not state the exact displacement used in the Pegasus, its output, torque, curb weight, gearing, speed or acceleration. Any article or video that supplies those numbers needs a separate, authoritative Pegasus-specific source.

- Documented: a 1971 Pontiac Pegasus design concept built from a production 1970 Firebird.
- Documented: a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 V12 contributed by Enzo Ferrari, according to GM Heritage.
- Documented: Ferrari five-speed transmission, Ferrari exhaust and mufflers, Ferrari gauges, Corvette disc brakes, Borrani wire wheels and a GM posi-traction rear axle.
- Not stated by the official account: engine displacement, power, torque, weight, acceleration, top speed, the project’s initiating rationale and the car’s later history.
Why it still matters
The Pegasus illustrates how far a manufacturer’s design department could push a concept when production constraints were not the immediate objective. A Firebird foundation, Ferrari powertrain, Corvette braking hardware and Borrani wheels created a cross-Atlantic parts mix that would have been impossible to mistake for an ordinary Pontiac.

Its importance is therefore less about a verified quarter-mile time than about provenance: a GM-led design study, an engine associated with Ferrari’s flagship road car, and a component strategy documented by the manufacturer’s own heritage archive.
