It was a one-model-year engine option, not a complete appearance or handling package—and the available sources do not establish how many W-33 cars Oldsmobile built.
What was the 1970 Oldsmobile W-33?
W-33 was an Oldsmobile option for 1970 that paired a high-compression 455-cubic-inch V-8 with Delta 88 models. General Motors’ 1970 Oldsmobile information kit lists the engine in the Delta 88 performance-engine section. A factory-document-based RPO reference describes it as a four-barrel 455 with dual exhaust and an automatic transmission.
That combination is the basis for calling the W-33 a sleeper: the performance came in a full-size 88 rather than a conspicuous, standalone muscle-car body. The records establish the engine option and its listed equipment, but not a universal W-33 trim, suspension, or handling package.
How much power did the W-33 455 make?
GM’s 1970 factory information kit rates the high-compression 455 at 390 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. Those are factory ratings, not results from an independent road test.

The factory-based RPO Archive W-33 reference identifies the engine as a four-barrel application with dual exhaust and automatic transmission. The option was chiefly an engine choice; associated equipment could be ordered separately. The RPO reference also notes heavy-duty cooling and alternator requirements for police use, which should not be mistaken for proof that every W-33-equipped car had identical police equipment.
Was W-33 really available for only one year?
The consulted option references document W-33 for 1970, supporting its description as a one-year option. That does not establish how many cars received it. The references reviewed do not provide a verified production total or a body-style breakdown, so claims that a specific number were built should not be treated as confirmed on this evidence.

A one-year listing and a production count answer different questions: the first describes when the option is documented; the second requires records of how many cars were actually ordered or built.
Was W-33 a complete performance package?
No. The evidence describes W-33 principally as a 455 engine option. The RPO Archive lists dual exhaust with the engine and notes separate supporting equipment; an older Oldsmobile enthusiast FAQ likewise says suspension and trim upgrades were separate options. Buyers should not assume the W-33 code by itself guaranteed a particular suspension setup, trim treatment, or complete handling package.

How did W-33 differ from the 1970 442 W-30?
Both used Oldsmobile 455s, but they belonged to different cars and represented different kinds of options. W-33 was associated with the full-size Delta 88; W-30 was part of the 442 performance context. GM’s Heritage page for the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 describes W-30 as a 370-hp 455 package with forced-air induction and other equipment. The 442 information is useful for contrast, not as evidence about W-33 production.
| Option | Application | Factory-listed power | Scope described in the sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-33 | Full-size Delta 88 | 390 hp for the high-compression 455 at 5,000 rpm; GM’s 1970 Oldsmobile information kit | Principally an engine option; the RPO reference lists a four-barrel, dual exhaust, and automatic transmission |
| W-30 | 442 performance context | 370 hp for the 455; GM’s 1970 442 information | Package including forced-air induction and other equipment |
GM also gives a count of 1,542 automatic W-30 cars in its 442 material. That number belongs to the 442 W-30 configuration and cannot be used as a W-33 production figure.
