The 1951 Whizzer Pacemaker was a complete motorized bicycle, not simply a Whizzer engine kit mounted on a bicycle. A visual-history entry lists a 199 cc engine and 35 mph (56 km/h) top speed, while specialist histories describe changes from the early J motor to the 300 series. Those figures are historical references, not verified test results for a particular surviving bike or a definitive specification for every 1951 configuration.
What was the 1951 Whizzer Pacemaker?
Whizzer sold both engine kits and complete motorized bicycles. The Pacemaker belonged to the latter category: Whizzer.be’s history says the Model J was supplied as a complete Pacemaker from 1948, using a Schwinn-type frame. That distinction matters when identifying one today; a Whizzer-powered bicycle is not automatically a factory Pacemaker.
For contrast, MOMBAT says most Whizzer motor kits were intended for balloon-tire bicycles. Its Pacemaker history describes a complete machine with its own frame and equipment, rather than just a motor added to a customer’s bicycle. Whizzer.be’s historical account and MOMBAT’s Whizzer history provide the model context.
What specifications and equipment are documented?
The Motor Bike Book: The Definitive Visual History identifies a “Whizzer Pacemaker 1951” with a 199 cc single-cylinder engine and a listed top speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). This is a published model entry, not a documented road test of a specific 1951 example. A definitive factory specification sheet establishing that every 1951 Pacemaker had the same configuration is not established by the available records.

MOMBAT describes early Pacemaker equipment as including a telescopic front fork, 24-inch wheels, a dual-beam headlight, taillight, generator and front drum brake. It reports an introduction price of $199.50, but does not state the year of the historical material on that page. These details are secondary model-history reporting, not a serial-numbered factory build sheet, so they should not be treated as proof that every surviving bike retains its original parts.
How fast was it, and which engine did it use?
The clearest figure specifically attached to the 1951 Pacemaker in the cited visual history is 35 mph (56 km/h). MOMBAT’s history says the Pacemaker initially used the J motor and that the 300 series followed by late 1949. It attributes three horsepower and a claimed 40 mph top speed to the 300 engine. That 40 mph figure is an engine-history claim, not an independently established test result for a 1951 Pacemaker.

Because the model history covers an engine transition and the available evidence does not settle the configuration of every 1951 machine, an individual bike’s engine markings matter more than a generalized speed claim. Modifications or later engine substitutions can also make a surviving example differ from the historical description.
What does the Smithsonian’s Pacemaker record tell us?
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History catalogs a related Whizzer Pacemaker as made in 1950, not 1951. Its record says Americo Petrongelli bought it in 1951 at age 18, rode and commuted on it near Chicago Heights, Illinois, and later adapted an extra seat for his sons. The account is the museum’s catalog description, not a direct quotation from Petrongelli or a universal specification for 1951 models. The catalog lists dimensions of 45 × 28 × 74 inches (114.3 × 71.12 × 187.96 cm); these are object dimensions, not performance measurements. See the Smithsonian collection record.

How can you identify or research a surviving 1951 example?
Use the model description as a comparison point, not a guarantee that each component is original. A practical identification check is:
- Establish whether the bicycle appears to be a complete Pacemaker or a separate bicycle fitted with a Whizzer kit.
- Record the frame and engine markings before assuming the engine is original to the bike.
- Compare the frame and visible equipment with period images and descriptions, while allowing for repairs, modifications and engine changes.
- Check the revision and scope of any manual before applying its instructions or ordering parts; a catalog entry alone does not confirm compatibility.
The AMF Vintage Motorcycle Library catalogue search lists a 1951 Whizzer Special brochure and a 1951 advertisement. IceniCAM’s document index lists a Whizzer Model J installation and operating manual with a service parts list. These entries are useful leads for period imagery and documentation, but do not establish current availability, or prove that the material fits every 1951 Pacemaker. See the AMF library catalogue search and IceniCAM document index.
