Cars can hide useful functions in their design or tuck them into menus, but no feature on this list is guaranteed to be in every vehicle. These 19 examples come from specific BMW, Hyundai, Kia, and Chevrolet documentation; availability depends on model, year, trim, market, and sometimes software. To see what your own car supports, check its owner’s manual and in-car settings before trying a feature.
BMW Shy Tech: functions built into the design
BMW uses “Shy Tech” to describe features that stay visually unobtrusive until needed. The examples below come from BMW USA’s official Shy Tech FAQ; they are not standard across all BMWs.
- Washer-fluid filler beneath the front roundel. On described vehicles, the washer-fluid fill point is concealed under the BMW hood emblem, rather than presented as a prominent cap.
- Rear camera integrated into the roundel. The rear-view camera is incorporated into the rear badge, keeping it less conspicuous when not in use.
- Speakers behind acoustic fabric. Sound can pass through fabric-covered surfaces while the speaker hardware remains out of sight.
- Flush-fitting door handles with touch buttons. BMW describes handles that sit flush with the body and include touch controls.
- Sensors and cameras integrated into the grille. The grille design can incorporate sensing and camera hardware instead of leaving it visibly separate.
- Radiant heat in dashboard and door panels. Heating elements in these surfaces warm occupants without relying only on air blowing from vents.
- Fewer visible controls. Some controls are minimized or made less prominent as part of the restrained cabin design.
- Touch-sensitive open-pore wood. BMW describes open-pore wood trim that can also respond to touch.
BMW USA says, “Shy Tech remains largely in the background, only revealing its function when in use or explicitly needed.” Check the equipment list for the exact BMW: a design description does not confirm that every Shy Tech example is fitted to every model.
Hyundai: useful functions tucked into settings
The 2026 USA Hyundai owner manual’s Convenience Features section describes several settings that can be easy to overlook. Menu names and availability may differ by model and specification, and infotainment functions can change after software updates.

- Automatic rear wiper in reverse. On equipped vehicles, the rear wiper can operate automatically when the front wipers are on and the gear selector is in reverse. It helps clear the rear window when visibility is likely to matter.
- Rear Occupant Alert. This alert is intended to prompt a check of the rear seating area. Consult the vehicle manual for what triggers the warning and how the system works in your model.
- Remote window opening. When the feature is supported and enabled, holding the smart-key unlock button can open the windows. Confirm the exact operation and settings in your manual before using it.
- Approach unlock. Some configurations can unlock as the driver approaches with the smart key, avoiding a button press.
- Configurable lighting. The manual includes lighting settings that let drivers adjust available vehicle lighting behavior.
- Driver-assistance options. Available assistance functions and their settings can be configured through vehicle controls or infotainment menus, depending on the vehicle.
Hyundai cautions drivers not to rely solely on assistance functions: “Be sure to always check the road conditions while driving. The Driver Assistance system helps you drive safely and conveniently. Relying solely on the function may cause violation of traffic rules and regulations, resulting in an accident.” Keep watching the road and surroundings even when a system is active.
Kia: memory, welcome lighting, and cabin comfort
The examples here are described in Kia’s 2024 USA owner manual, Interior features. They apply to the manual’s vehicle context and equipped configurations; confirm the feature and controls in the manual for your specific Kia.

- Ventilation seat. Some configurations also offer seat ventilation; it is a separate comfort function from seat heating.
Chevrolet: cargo, access, and small convenience details
Chevrolet’s Quick Start Guides list the following examples across its vehicles. The guide does not establish that the features come together on one model or are available throughout the lineup, so use the guide for the exact vehicle.

How to find hidden features in your own car
- Identify the exact vehicle. Note the model year, trim, market, and any relevant equipment package. A feature on another year or trim is not proof yours has it.
- Open the matching owner’s manual. Search its contents or index for terms such as “convenience,” “memory,” “liftgate,” “wiper,” or the feature name. Use the manual for your vehicle, not a similar-looking model.
- Check the in-car settings. Look in the relevant vehicle, convenience, lighting, driver-assistance, or access menus. Labels and menu paths can vary, and updates may change infotainment functions.
- Read the operating conditions before testing. Some functions require an enabled setting, a particular gear, a smart key nearby, or specific equipment. Do not experiment while driving; park safely and follow the manual.
- Use extra caution with assistance systems. Treat alerts and driver aids as support, not as a substitute for checking the road, surroundings, or rear seats yourself.
