17 Rare Motorcycles in Jay Leno’s Garage—and What Their Values Tell Us

Jay Leno’s garage includes some exceptionally rare and historically significant motorcycles, but the available reporting does not establish a reliable current price ranking for 17 of them. A 2025 article lists 17 machines associated with the collection; it does not provide consistently sourced, comparable valuations. The clearest published figures are Leno’s recollections in a 2018 Los Angeles Times profile: he said he bought a 1939 Brough Superior for $5,000 in the 1980s and described Broughs as worth “half-a-million-dollar” by 2018. Those are historical statements, not current appraisals of every bike.

Are these really the 17 most expensive bikes in Jay Leno’s garage?

Not as a verified current price ranking. Gadget Review’s April 17, 2025 article presents 17 rare motorcycles associated with Leno’s collection, but does not provide a consistent valuation date, condition assessment, or comparable-sale evidence for each one. Its order should be read as an editorial list, not as proof that the first bike is currently worth more than the second.

That distinction matters with collectible motorcycles. A model’s reputation and rarity can make it desirable, but a defensible value also depends on the exact machine, originality, restoration, provenance, condition, and comparable sales near the valuation date. The reviewed coverage does not establish those details for all 17 entries, so assigning precise present-day prices would create false certainty.

What price figures have been reported?

In a 2018 Los Angeles Times profile, Jay Leno recalled buying a 1939 Brough Superior for $5,000 in the 1980s. He also described Broughs as “half-a-million-dollar motorcycles” by 2018. These are Leno’s reported recollections and general estimate, respectively—not a documented auction result, an appraisal of a particular bike, or a current market quote. Gadget Review’s April 2025 list supplies a roster of machines, but the reviewed material does not establish a complete set of current prices or a shared method for comparing them. See the 2025 list. The most accurate answer to “which is the most expensive?” is therefore that the available sources do not confirm a winner.

Which rare motorcycles does the 2025 list name?

The article identifies the following examples. Their inclusion reflects the list’s coverage; it does not independently establish each motorcycle’s current ownership, condition, or market value.

The list also includes five other entries, but the independent reporting reviewed here does not substantiate their identities or details. The article calls the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller the first production motorcycle; that claim is attributed here to the list rather than treated as independently verified.

What makes the collection notable beyond price?

Brough Superior and Vincent motorcycles

Brough Superior SS100s recur in the 2025 list and the Los Angeles Times’ 2018 coverage. Leno called the marque the “first superbike,” as quoted in the newspaper’s report. The 2018 article also places the Broughs among a collection spanning many eras and manufacturers. The recurrence shows their prominence in coverage of Leno’s garage; it does not establish that a particular SS100 is the collection’s most valuable bike today.

Unusual engineering and historic machines

The 2018 Los Angeles Times profile describes a 1922 Megola with a five-cylinder radial engine mounted on its front wheel, as well as a Y2K motorcycle powered by a helicopter engine. The paper reported the Y2K at 375 horsepower and said it had been tested at 237 mph; those are the newspaper’s reported figures, not results from a new test. The profile also mentions electric motorcycles and scooters, a Henderson Four, and examples from makers including Vincent, Triumph, Norton, BSA, AJS, Harley-Davidson, Indian, and manufacturers from Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Collection counts are snapshots, not a current inventory

A 1998 Los Angeles Times profile reported nine Vincent motorcycles, three Ducatis, two Brough Superiors, a Nimbus, a Munch Mammoth, and a 1918 Pope. The 2018 profile describes a different collection snapshot, including an unrestored 1918 Pope, a Megola, and other machines. Neither account should be used as a definitive current inventory count. How should you judge a claim about a collectible bike’s value?

Before treating a number as a meaningful estimate, check what kind of number it is and what specific motorcycle it describes. A past purchase recollection, a broad comment about a marque, an asking price, an auction result, and a professional appraisal are not interchangeable.

  • Identify the exact machine: Confirm model, year, configuration, and whether the claimed bike is the same motorcycle being discussed.
  • Check provenance: Look for documented ownership and history tied to that individual motorcycle rather than general claims about the model.
  • Assess condition and originality: Restoration quality, surviving original parts, and mechanical state can affect comparability.
  • Compare dated sales: Use sales of genuinely comparable bikes near the valuation date, and distinguish completed transactions from asking prices.
  • Keep the scope precise: State whether a number describes one example, a model generally, or a dated estimate—not the whole collection.

What is it like to ride and maintain these older motorcycles?

Rarity and price are only part of the experience. In the 2018 Los Angeles Times article, Leno remarked on the different demands of older motorcycles: “You don’t really stop. You try to retard progress. You practice accident avoidance.” The newspaper also describes the older machines as maintenance-intensive. That is a practical reason not to equate collecting or admiring a vintage motorcycle with using one like a modern bike.

Leno also described the appeal as hands-on mechanical involvement: “There’s a great sense of mechanical satisfaction,” he said. “You control your own destiny. If it stops running, you try to get a spark and some fuel and some air and you get it running again. You feel like you’ve really accomplished something.”
