You do not need a hybrid to get respectable fuel economy from an SUV. For the 2026 model year, several gasoline-only crossovers reach 30 mpg or more in EPA combined testing, with the Toyota Corolla Cross and Nissan Rogue tied at the top at 32 mpg combined.

This ranking uses each SUV’s most efficient available configuration, generally front-wheel drive. All figures are EPA estimates for gasoline-powered vehicles; hybrid and plug-in-hybrid versions are excluded. An SUV with all-wheel drive, larger wheels, a more powerful engine, or an off-road package may have a lower rating than the one shown here.

2026 gasoline SUVs ranked by fuel economy

EPA combined fuel economy combines city and highway testing, with the calculation weighted toward city driving. It is a more useful single-number comparison than highway mpg alone, particularly for an SUV that will spend much of its time commuting or running errands.

1. Toyota Corolla Cross: 32 mpg combined

The Corolla Cross is the most efficient non-hybrid SUV in this group when measured by its highest EPA combined rating. Its 2.0-liter gasoline engine and front-wheel-drive layout return 31 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

  • 3 Mesh Pockets Organizers of Child Booster Protector - baby car seat protector allows easy access to baby items, keeps mat securely in place.

That rating applies to the efficient FWD version. Choosing all-wheel drive adds traction but reduces fuel economy, so buyers should compare the window sticker for the exact trim rather than assume every Corolla Cross earns 32 mpg.

2. Nissan Rogue: 32 mpg combined

The Rogue matches the Corolla Cross at 32 mpg combined and has the strongest highway number on this list: 36 mpg. The rating belongs to the FWD model with Nissan’s 201-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

The Rogue is a larger compact SUV than several vehicles above it, making its fuel-economy result particularly notable. AWD lowers the rating. The turbocharged engine also means driving style matters: frequent hard acceleration can produce results well below the EPA estimate.

3. Hyundai Kona: 31 mpg combined

The gasoline Hyundai Kona reaches 31 mpg combined. Depending on trim equipment and whether the engine stop-start system is fitted, its official split is either 28/35 mpg or 29/34 mpg city/highway.

The combined figure does not change, but the different city and highway numbers are a reminder that equipment differences can affect EPA results even when the engine and vehicle are otherwise similar.

4. Chevrolet Trailblazer: 31 mpg combined

The front-wheel-drive Trailblazer with the 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine earns 29 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. Its small turbocharged engine helps it compete with the most economical subcompact crossovers.

Do not apply this number to an E85 fuel-economy comparison. Trailblazer versions capable of running E85 receive substantially lower ratings when tested on that fuel. The fuel type shown on the vehicle’s EPA label matters.

5. Volkswagen Taos: 31 mpg combined

The Volkswagen Taos reaches 31 mpg combined in its most efficient FWD configuration, with a 28-mpg city rating and an impressive 36 mpg highway rating. It uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

As with the other front-drive entries, selecting AWD changes the result. Check the specific trim’s EPA label if fuel cost is a major part of the buying decision.

6. Nissan Kicks: 31 mpg combined

The FWD Nissan Kicks is rated at 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. Nissan specifies regular unleaded fuel, so it does not require premium gasoline to achieve its published rating.

An AWD Kicks is rated at 27/34/30 mpg. That one-mpg combined difference is modest on paper, but FWD remains the choice for maximum efficiency.

7. Buick Encore GX: 30 mpg combined

The front-wheel-drive Buick Encore GX returns 29 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for a 30-mpg combined rating. It sits at the more efficient end of the small SUV class despite offering a more upscale presentation than many subcompact rivals.

AWD and larger wheel options can reduce the rating. If two otherwise similar Encore GX trims are being compared, the tire and wheel package may matter as much as convenience equipment.

8. Honda CR-V: 30 mpg combined

The gasoline Honda CR-V earns 28 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined with its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and FWD. This is the conventional gasoline CR-V, not one of Honda’s hybrid versions.

The CR-V is one of the larger and more practical SUVs on this list. Buyers who need its cargo and passenger space can get it without dropping below 30 mpg combined, provided they select the efficient FWD powertrain.

The Envista is FWD-only, so there is no AWD penalty to consider. E85-capable configurations, where applicable, have lower fuel-economy ratings than the gasoline figure listed here.

10. Chevrolet Trax: 30 mpg combined

The Chevrolet Trax earns 30 mpg combined in current 2026 specifications, with ratings of 28 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. It uses a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine and front-wheel drive.

Some older third-party listings show 29 mpg combined for certain configurations or use an outdated figure. Chevrolet’s current specifications and the EPA information for the 2026 model should take priority when comparing a new Trax.

11. Volkswagen Tiguan: 29 mpg combined

The most efficient gasoline Volkswagen Tiguan is rated at 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. That figure applies to the 201-hp version.

The more powerful 268-hp configuration is rated at 25 mpg combined, so choosing the higher-output engine comes with a measurable fuel-economy tradeoff.

12. Subaru Crosstrek: 29 mpg combined

The gasoline Crosstrek reaches 29 mpg combined with its 2.0-liter engine. Unlike most of the higher-ranked vehicles here, it comes with standard all-wheel drive, making its 26/33 city/highway result notable for buyers who want four driven wheels without moving to a larger SUV.

This listing excludes the Crosstrek Hybrid. The hybrid and gasoline models should be treated as separate powertrain choices rather than interchangeable trim levels.

13. Subaru Forester: 29 mpg combined

The gasoline Subaru Forester is rated at 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. Standard Symmetrical AWD is included, so the rating does not depend on downgrading to front-wheel drive.

The 2026 Forester Hybrid is excluded from this comparison. If fuel economy is the priority, compare the hybrid’s separate EPA rating with the gasoline Forester rather than using the 29-mpg figure for both.

14. Honda HR-V: 28 mpg combined

The front-wheel-drive Honda HR-V returns 26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined with its 2.0-liter gasoline engine. AWD models are less efficient.

The HR-V is smaller than the CR-V, but it offers a lower entry point into Honda’s SUV lineup while retaining a conventional gasoline powertrain and a respectable highway rating.

15. Hyundai Tucson: 28 mpg combined

The FWD gasoline Hyundai Tucson earns 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The Tucson Hybrid and plug-in hybrid are not included.

Because AWD and electrified powertrains use different EPA ratings, shoppers should identify the exact powertrain before comparing a Tucson with the similarly sized Kia Sportage.

16. Kia Sportage: 28 mpg combined

The gasoline Kia Sportage matches the Tucson at 28 mpg combined, with a rating of 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the FWD 2.5-liter four-cylinder version.

Kia also sells hybrid and plug-in-hybrid Sportage models, but those are separate fuel-economy propositions. The 28-mpg number applies only to the conventional gasoline SUV.

What changes an SUV’s real-world fuel economy?

EPA estimates are useful for comparing vehicles under standardized conditions, but they are not a promise of what every driver will achieve. Several factors can move actual mileage substantially:

  • Speed: Sustained high-speed highway driving increases aerodynamic drag and usually reduces mpg.
  • Temperature: Cold weather, winter fuel, and extended use of the heater can lower fuel economy.
  • Tires and wheels: Larger wheels, aggressive tread, low tire pressure, and winter tires may increase rolling resistance.
  • Payload: Passengers, cargo, roof boxes, and trailer loads make the engine work harder.
  • Terrain: Hills, rough roads, and frequent elevation changes reduce efficiency.
  • Driving style: Abrupt acceleration, hard braking, and long periods of idling waste fuel.
  • Drivetrain: AWD adds weight and mechanical losses, which is why the FWD version is usually the efficient choice.

Use the EPA combined number to compare models, then look at the exact window sticker for the trim, engine, wheels, drivetrain, and fuel type you intend to buy.

Vehicles left out of this ranking

This is specifically a 2026 U.S.-market list of gasoline-only SUVs. That removes several familiar names from consideration:

  • Kia Niro, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and Lexus UX 300h: These are hybrid vehicles, so their high mpg figures cannot be compared with conventional gasoline SUVs here.
  • 2026 Toyota RAV4: The redesigned U.S. lineup is hybrid or plug-in hybrid rather than gasoline-only.
  • Ford Escape: Ford canceled the Escape as an ongoing production model. Remaining early-2026 inventory consists of vehicles already produced, so it is not treated as a current 2026 production entry.
  • 2026 Kia Seltos: Claims about an all-new 2026 Seltos generally refer to the 2027 model year, not a 2026 U.S. vehicle.

FAQ

What is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid SUV for 2026?

The Toyota Corolla Cross and Nissan Rogue are tied at 32 mpg combined. The Corolla Cross achieves that rating with its gasoline 2.0-liter engine and FWD, while the Rogue uses its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with FWD.

Which non-hybrid SUV gets the best highway mileage?

The Nissan Rogue and Volkswagen Taos both reach 36 mpg highway in their most efficient FWD configurations. The Rogue is rated 29/36/32 mpg, while the Taos is rated 28/36/31 mpg city/highway/combined.

Does AWD reduce SUV fuel economy?

Usually. AWD adds weight and mechanical resistance, and many manufacturers publish a lower EPA rating for AWD versions. Examples include the Nissan Kicks, Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Chevrolet Equinox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are EPA mpg estimates the mileage I should expect?

Not necessarily. Speed, weather, tire pressure, wheel size, terrain, payload, idling, and driving style can all change real-world fuel economy. Use EPA ratings to compare vehicles under consistent conditions, then expect actual results to vary.

The Bottom Line

The Toyota Corolla Cross and Nissan Rogue are the efficiency leaders among 2026 gasoline-only SUVs at 32 mpg combined. The Hyundai Kona, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Volkswagen Taos, and Nissan Kicks follow at 31 mpg, while several small and compact SUVs reach 30 mpg.

For the highest rating, choose the listed FWD configuration and verify the exact EPA label before buying. If you need AWD, more power, larger wheels, or off-road equipment, budget for lower fuel economy than the headline number.
