15 Best Used All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles Under $20,000, Ranked

From the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Crosstrek to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Ford Escape Hybrid AWD, these are the best used AWD vehicles you can realistically shop for under $20,000.

A $20,000 used-car budget can still buy a capable all-wheel-drive vehicle, but the right choice depends on what you actually need AWD to do. A compact crossover such as a Mazda CX-5 is a better daily driver than an old three-row SUV, while a Subaru Crosstrek or Forester makes more sense for frequent snow and light trails. If fuel economy matters most, the Ford Escape Hybrid AWD is worth a close look.

The rankings below reflect the U.S. used market as of August 9, 2026. They weigh reliability reputation, safety equipment, operating cost, practicality, driving quality, AWD usefulness, and how realistically each vehicle can be found at or below a $20,000 advertised price. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, financing, and immediate repairs are not included.

1. 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 Touring or Grand Touring AWD

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Mazda CX-5 is the strongest all-around choice on this list. It has a well-finished cabin, composed handling, a comfortable ride, and a strong reputation for dependable ownership. It is also common enough in the used market that buyers can shop for condition and service history instead of taking the first AWD example they find.

#1 Best Overall
Vinyl Highlights Windshield Slogans Window Stickers (Black Text On Fluorescent Green) (14-1/2" x 2-3/4") (12 per Pack) (All Wheel Drive)
  • Each Sticker Measures 14.5" x 2.75"
  • Vinyl with light adhesive - easy on, easy off - one time use stickers
  • Durable and Weatherproof
  • Features Black Text On Fluorescent Green Sticker
  • Shrink-Wrapped 12 Per Pack

2018 models gained standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. For 2020, Mazda made its full i-Activsense driver-assistance package standard. AWD was optional, so confirm the drivetrain from the VIN or factory equipment listing.

The rear seat and cargo area are tighter than those of a CR-V or RAV4. Turbocharged Grand Touring Reserve and Signature versions can also be more expensive to maintain and harder to find under budget. For most buyers, the naturally aspirated Touring is the sensible target.

Check current CX-5 listings under $20,000.

2. 2018–2020 Subaru Crosstrek

Best target: 2019–2020 Premium or Limited

The Crosstrek combines standard AWD, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, a useful hatchback body, and strong resale value. It is easy to recommend for snowy commutes, gravel roads, light trails, and buyers who want a small vehicle that feels more adventurous than a typical front-drive hatchback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.0-liter engine is the main compromise. Acceleration is slow, particularly with passengers or cargo, and the continuously variable transmission needs documented maintenance. Current listings show that 2020 examples can fit the budget, but many have more than 50,000 miles; one recent example was a 2020 Limited with 55,859 miles listed below $19,000.

3. 2016–2019 Toyota RAV4 AWD or Hybrid AWD

Best target: 2016–2018 XLE AWD or 2016–2019 Hybrid AWD

The RAV4 brings practical dimensions, a large service network, durable mechanicals, and excellent resale value. The 2016 model year introduced the RAV4 Hybrid, which used standard AWD and earned a 32-mpg combined EPA rating.

The conventional AWD model is usually the easier buy at this price. Hybrid examples can be excellent, but low-mileage vehicles command a premium. Current listings under $20,000 include 2017–2020 RAV4 Hybrids, but many have approximately 100,000 to 150,000 miles. A hybrid battery inspection, complete service history, and a careful check of suspension and brake wear are essential.

4. 2017–2020 Honda CR-V AWD

Best target: 2017–2019 EX AWD

The CR-V offers one of the best combinations of interior room, comfort, fuel economy, and resale value in the compact-SUV class. The 2017 redesign brought a more modern cabin and turbocharged engines, and the EX trim provides desirable safety and convenience equipment.

AWD was optional, so do not assume that an EX or Touring vehicle has it. Verify the specific car. Some 1.5-liter turbo models have reported fuel-dilution concerns, especially in cold-weather operation. Before buying, check for software updates, relevant campaign or warranty work, oil-change records, and evidence that the engine reached normal operating temperature during regular use.

The CR-V ranks below the RAV4 because comparable AWD examples often cost more than similarly equipped CX-5 or Crosstrek models.

5. 2019–2021 Subaru Forester

Best target: 2019–2020 Premium or Sport

The redesigned 2019 Forester is one of the easiest vehicles to use in winter. Standard AWD, excellent outward visibility, generous headroom, and a square cargo area make it particularly practical for families, dog owners, and drivers who dislike the blind spots of larger SUVs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.5-liter engine is dependable but not quick. Also, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were unavailable on the base trim, so inspect the equipment list rather than assuming every 2019–2021 Forester has those features. Used prices remain firm, which is why the Forester ranks behind the smaller and often less expensive Crosstrek.

6. 2020–2022 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD

Best target: 2020–2021 SE Sport AWD or SEL AWD

The Escape Hybrid AWD is the fuel-economy specialist here. AWD versions use a gasoline-electric powertrain and are rated at approximately 40 mpg combined. They are also newer than many of the Japanese alternatives in this price range. Recent listings include 2020 and 2021 AWD hybrids advertised below $20,000, with some showing roughly 50,000 to 80,000 miles.

Availability is the challenge. Front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrids are much more common, so verify the AWD system rather than relying on a listing headline or a high equipment level. Toyota has a stronger long-term reliability and resale reputation, but the Escape can be the better value if you prioritize age and fuel economy.

7. 2020–2022 Mazda CX-30 AWD

Best target: 2020–2021 Select or Preferred AWD

The CX-30 delivers a quiet, upscale cabin and sharper handling than most subcompact SUVs. It is a strong choice for a buyer who wants the driving feel of a Mazda3 with a higher seating position and available AWD. Many 2020–2022 examples can fit the budget, particularly in base or Select trim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its limitations are space and performance. Rear-seat legroom is tight, the cargo area is modest, and the base engine is adequate rather than fast. Families should compare it directly with a CX-5 before buying; the CX-30 is more polished to drive but less useful for people and luggage.

8. 2018–2020 Subaru Outback

Best target: 2018–2019 2.5i Premium or Limited

The Outback is a raised wagon rather than a conventional SUV, but that distinction makes it appealing to buyers who carry bicycles, pets, camping equipment, or bulky cargo. It has standard AWD, good visibility, comfortable road manners, and more usable cargo space than the smaller crossovers above it.

Pay close attention to transmission history. Certain 2018 Legacy and Outback vehicles received a Subaru CVT warranty extension to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first. This was not a recall and does not automatically apply to every vehicle. Check eligibility by VIN and review service records before relying on that coverage.

9. 2019–2021 Mazda3 AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 Preferred or Select AWD

Not every AWD buyer needs an SUV. The Mazda3 is one of the best choices for someone who wants a compact sedan or hatchback with strong steering, a high-quality interior, and confident road manners. The fourth-generation car arrived for 2019, and AWD was offered on both sedan and hatchback versions of the 2021 model. The 2021 turbocharged Mazda3 included AWD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rear-seat space is limited, and the hatchback’s rear visibility is worse than that of a crossover. Still, it is an unusually appealing option for a single driver or couple who want winter traction without the bulk and fuel consumption of an SUV.

10. 2015–2016 Toyota Highlander AWD

Best target: 2015 XLE AWD or Limited AWD

The Highlander is the best three-row vehicle in this ranking. It offers a comfortable ride, useful family space, available AWD, and Toyota’s broad parts and service support. It is a better fit than a compact crossover for buyers who regularly need a third row or carry several passengers.

Simply wipe it with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. When you receive the goods, if there are any problem, please contact us and do not directly open the dispute. We promise we will give you a satisfied solution after we confirmed it.

A $20,000 advertised price generally means an older Highlander with higher mileage. Have the suspension, cooling-system components, air conditioning, brakes, and third-row hardware inspected. Fuel economy and maintenance costs are also less favorable than those of the smaller vehicles ranked above it.

11. 2016–2018 Acura RDX AWD

Best target: 2016–2018 Technology Package AWD

The RDX provides stronger acceleration and a more premium cabin than a typical CR-V while avoiding much of the repair complexity associated with older German luxury SUVs. It is a good compromise for buyers who want upscale materials and a quieter highway experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ownership is still more expensive than with a Mazda or Honda-badged crossover. Budget for higher fuel, tire, brake, insurance, and maintenance costs, and insist on complete records. A neglected RDX can erase its purchase-price advantage quickly.

12. 2015–2017 Lexus NX 200t AWD

Best target: 2015–2017 NX 200t AWD

The Lexus NX has a quiet cabin, strong resale value, and premium-brand build quality. AWD examples can fall below $20,000 because they are older and frequently carry higher mileage. A well-maintained NX is a comfortable choice for commuting and light family use.

The turbocharged engine adds maintenance considerations, while rear-seat and cargo space are limited. Repairs, insurance, tires, and dealer labor can cost more than they would on a Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-5. Buy condition and history, not simply the Lexus badge.

13. 2017–2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Best target: 2017–2019 SE or SEL

The Golf Alltrack is the enthusiast’s alternative to a small AWD crossover. Its 4Motion AWD system, wagon cargo area, good driving position, and composed handling make it useful without becoming dull. It is especially attractive to buyers who want a wagon rather than an SUV.

Maintenance complexity is higher than with the Japanese choices. Inspect the dual-clutch transmission service history, check for completed recall work, and have the vehicle evaluated by a technician familiar with Volkswagen products. A clean, documented Alltrack can be rewarding; a cheap one with missing records can be expensive.

14. 2019–2021 Honda HR-V AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 EX AWD

The HR-V is easy to maneuver, economical, and surprisingly flexible inside for its exterior size. Its standard-style small crossover packaging works well in cities, and AWD examples are widely available below $20,000.

It ranks low because it is slow, noisy under acceleration, and less refined than the CX-30, CX-5, and Crosstrek. Its crash-avoidance technology also lags behind newer vehicles. Choose it for affordable practicality, not performance.

15. 2018–2020 Ford Fusion AWD

Best target: 2018–2019 SE or Titanium AWD

The Fusion is the best sedan-oriented value on the list. Certain gasoline-engine trims offered AWD, and the car provides a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin, and strong equipment for the money. It can be a compelling alternative when you do not need SUV cargo space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWD was not available on every Fusion, and the Fusion Hybrid is not the same as the gasoline AWD model. Verify the drivetrain through the VIN or factory equipment sheet. The Fusion ranks last because it is older, less versatile, and less efficient than many of the crossovers above it.

How to buy an AWD vehicle under $20,000

  1. Confirm the drivetrain. Check the VIN, factory build sheet, or equipment listing. “SUV,” “traction control,” and “4×4 style” do not prove that the vehicle has AWD.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls should be identified before purchase. Recall repairs are generally completed by the manufacturer at no charge.
  3. Pay for an independent inspection. This is especially important for Subaru CVTs, turbocharged engines, luxury vehicles, and older three-row SUVs.
  4. Check all four tires. The tires should match in size, brand, model, and have similar tread depth. Differences in tire circumference can place additional stress on some AWD systems.
  5. Inspect for rust underneath. Snowbelt vehicles may have serious corrosion despite a clean title and attractive body panels. Examine subframes, brake lines, suspension mounts, exhaust components, and rocker panels.
  6. Reserve money after the purchase. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, insurance, tires, fluids, brakes, and immediate maintenance can push a $20,000 advertised vehicle well beyond that amount out the door.
  7. Use appropriate tires. AWD helps a vehicle accelerate from a stop, but it does not make it stop or turn better on snow and ice. Tire compound, tread depth, speed, and driver inputs remain critical.

Claims about AWD used cars that are often wrong

Claim What is actually true
All Subarus use the same AWD system. Hardware and operating logic vary by model, engine, transmission, and trim.
Every RAV4 Hybrid under $20,000 is a bargain. Many examples below the price cap have approximately 100,000–150,000 miles and need careful battery, suspension, brake, and service-history checks.
The Mazda3 AWD was hatchback-only. The 2021 Mazda3 offered AWD in both sedan and hatchback body styles.
AWD improves winter braking. AWD mainly helps acceleration. Tires have a major effect on braking and cornering.
An open recall automatically makes a vehicle unsafe to buy. It means you should verify the repair status. Use NHTSA’s VIN tool and confirm that required work is complete.
A $20,000 listing costs $20,000 out the door. Taxes, registration, dealer add-ons, financing products, and immediate repairs can add substantially to the final bill.

FAQ

What is the best used AWD vehicle under $20,000?

The 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 AWD is the best overall choice for most buyers because it combines dependable ownership, a refined interior, good safety equipment, enjoyable handling, and realistic availability below the budget. Choose a 2019–2021 Touring or Grand Touring with complete service records.

Is AWD worth paying extra for in snow?

AWD can help a vehicle accelerate from a stop on slippery roads, but it does not improve braking or guarantee cornering grip. Good winter or all-weather tires, adequate tread, moderate speed, and smooth driving matter more once the vehicle is moving.

Are used Subaru AWD vehicles reliable?

They can be, particularly when the CVT has been serviced properly. Have a Crosstrek, Forester, or Outback inspected before purchase, review transmission records, check for rust, and verify any applicable warranty extension by VIN.

What should I check on a used AWD vehicle before buying?

Confirm AWD through the VIN or factory equipment list, check recalls through NHTSA, inspect all four tires for matching size and tread, look for underbody rust, review maintenance records, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection.

The Bottom Line

For most shoppers, start with a 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 AWD, then compare it with a Subaru Crosstrek if ground clearance and standard AWD matter more, or a Toyota RAV4 if resale value and long-term practicality are priorities. The Ford Escape Hybrid AWD is the standout efficiency play, while the Toyota Highlander is the best option when a third row is non-negotiable.

Regardless of the model, verify the drivetrain, inspect the underside, match the tires, check recalls, and leave room in the budget for taxes and immediate maintenance. A well-maintained two-wheel-drive vehicle on proper winter tires can be safer than a neglected AWD vehicle on mismatched rubber.
