New Atlas’s December 2024 selection of 14 compact campers spans far more than miniature travel trailers: it includes pickup-bed systems, van conversions, an expedition-truck camper and even an electric bicycle camper that can also be used as a boat. It is a varied editorial roundup, not a standardized ranking of the smallest RVs. The useful way to read it is by camping format and the trade-offs each format makes.
What counts as a tiny RV?
“Tiny RV” is an informal umbrella, not one consistent vehicle class. The 14 products in New Atlas’s 2024 roundup range from a sleeping-only teardrop to modular equipment for an eight-seat MPV. Some are towables, some depend on a pickup or van, and some are conversions of motorized vehicles. The BeTriton stretches the category further: it is an electric bicycle camper that also functions as a boat, and New Atlas says its motorized version can be towed by a conventional bicycle.

That variety matters when comparing specifications. A shell’s weight is not comparable to a finished motorhome’s, and a compact vehicle can still have very different facilities from another compact vehicle. Treat the list as a set of distinctive approaches to camping rather than a leaderboard.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between these formats
Start with the trips you actually take, not the word “tiny.” A sleeping pod, a modular MPV and an expanding trailer solve different problems. Use these questions to make a practical shortlist:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What must the camper provide? Decide whether enclosed sleeping is enough or whether you need standing room, a toilet, indoor cooking, a galley, fresh water, off-grid power or all-weather use. The 14 summaries do not establish that every product includes any particular facility.
- What vehicle will carry or tow it? For a pickup or van system, check the exact vehicle’s payload and axle limits as well as the camper’s loaded weight. For a towable, check the vehicle’s towing rating, hitch and axle limits. A product name or a reported minimum weight does not establish compatibility.
- What does “weight” mean for the exact build? Distinguish dry or unloaded weight from minimum-configuration weight and fully equipped weight. Add occupants, water, food, batteries, equipment and other cargo when assessing the real load. Do not compare unlike figures as though they described the same state of readiness.
- How much setup and conversion are acceptable? Modular pods and convertible bed kits can make a vehicle more versatile, but changing between travel, work and camping modes takes effort and storage. An expandable trailer shifts some of that work to arrival and departure at camp.
- Can you leave camp without packing everything? A camper attached to a pickup or built into a van can tie up the base vehicle. A separate trailer may let you unhitch and drive away, while a removable system may need to be taken out or stored. Consider how often you move once camp is set up.
- Does the layout match the trip? Compare sleeping capacity with the actual sleeping arrangement, interior space, weather protection, terrain needs, storage, power and water. Claims about insulation, weather resistance or off-road capability should be checked against maker documentation for the exact model.
- What does the quoted price include? Compare the same configuration and list included equipment, options, delivery, taxes and dealer charges separately. The roundup’s sub-$3,000 figure for the HitchHiker is historical, not a live quotation.
Compact is relative: examples outside the 14
Manufacturer examples help show why there is no single useful definition of “tiny.” They are context, not additional entries in New Atlas’s 14-product selection.
| Example | Published details | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Jayco Jay Feather Micro | Jayco lists the family at 19 ft 7 in–23 ft 2 in long and 3,735–4,510 lb unloaded; it describes the line as its lightest travel-trailer offering. The product page lists a 55-gallon fresh-water tank. Floorplans and specifications vary. | A compact travel trailer is still a towable with substantial length and weight; towing compatibility depends on the specific floorplan and tow vehicle. |
| 2024 Winnebago Micro Minnie | Winnebago lists a seven-foot width and a starting MSRP of $36,515. The MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, license, dealer preparation and other fees; Winnebago says prices and specifications may change. | A narrow trailer still needs to be evaluated as a complete purchase, including charges beyond starting MSRP. |
| 2024 Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A | Winnebago lists 17 ft 10 in exterior length, 6 ft 9 in width, 6 ft 3 in interior height, sleeping for three and 20 gallons of fresh water. Equipment, specifications, availability and price may change. | A compact motorhome carries its own powertrain and vehicle requirements, unlike a towable trailer. |
| Bend Teardrop range | The manufacturer states 950–1,750 lb across its 5-by-8 through 6-by-12 models. | Even within one teardrop maker’s range, size and weight vary by model; these are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. |
Jayco also lists optional JAYCOMMAND with a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for the 2024 Jay Feather Micro; it is not a standard feature across compact campers. If considering a TPMS, confirm compatibility with the tow vehicle, tires and trailer. The 2024 Jay Feather Micro brochure says it was printed in October 2023 and warns that some specifications may be estimates and models or features can change. nuCamp’s 2024 brochure covers TAG teardrops and TAB models with more interior facilities; verify the exact trim and configuration directly in the brochure or with the company before relying on a specification.
Quick Recap
What to verify before committing
- Identify the exact product and configuration. Ask the maker or conversion business which model, options, equipment and base vehicle the quote covers.
- Get the applicable weights and dimensions. Confirm the maker’s figure for the actual build and clarify whether it is dry, unloaded, minimum or fully equipped. Check overall dimensions in travel mode and at camp if the unit expands.
- Check vehicle limits using that build’s numbers. Compare loaded camper or trailer weight with the vehicle’s payload, axle, hitch and towing limits. Allow for people, water and cargo rather than relying on an advertised minimum alone.
- Confirm the facilities and sleeping layout in writing. Check what is included and what is optional, including toilet, cooking, water, power, heating and sleeping capacity.
- Test the ownership routine. Consider where a removable module will be stored, how long conversion takes, and whether the setup lets you use the base vehicle as intended.
- Verify current availability, price and local requirements. The 2024 roundup is not a current inventory or price list. Confirm current details with the maker or authorized seller and check applicable vehicle, registration and towing requirements where you live.
