Gadget Review’s February 4, 2025 article names 14 truck engines it associates with reliability or design concerns. Its “worst” label is an editorial framing, not the result of a published scoring method or a comparative reliability study. The engine-specific problems below are claims attributed to that article; they do not establish how often a failure occurs or which model years are affected.

The 14 truck engines on the list

1. Ford 5.4L Triton V8

Gadget Review cites spark-plug ejection and timing-chain failures. The article’s entry does not establish affected build ranges or how common either issue is.

2. Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel V8

The article cites head-gasket, oil-cooler, and injector problems. Those concerns alone do not determine the condition of a particular truck; its maintenance and repair records matter.

3. Ford 6.4L Power Stroke Diesel V8

Gadget Review points to the engine’s dual-turbo complexity, radiator concerns, and costly engine failure. The article does not provide a comparative repair-cost dataset or failure rate.

4. Chevrolet 5.3L V8

The article links Active Fuel Management (AFM) with oil consumption and lifter failures. It does not specify which 5.3L variants or model years its claim covers, so the engine name alone is not enough to identify a vehicle’s exposure.

5. Ram 3.0L EcoDiesel V6

Gadget Review cites exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and turbocharger problems. It does not quantify their prevalence or specify affected versions.

6. Chevrolet/GMC Atlas five-cylinder

The article lists vibration and oil leaks as concerns. It does not provide a diagnosis, affected-year range, or rate for either problem.

8. Dodge 4.7L V8

The concerns listed are valve-seat problems, sludge, and cooling-related issues. The article does not show that every 4.7L-equipped truck is affected.

9. Toyota 3VZ-E 3.0L V6

Gadget Review cites head-gasket and overheating concerns. It does not quantify the risk or identify affected vehicles by year or condition.

10. Ford 2.7L EcoBoost V6

The article alleges carbon buildup, oil consumption, and timing-chain wear. Its entry does not distinguish variants or model years, or establish how often these issues occur.

11. Ford first-generation 3.5L EcoBoost V6

Gadget Review alleges timing-chain stretch and carbon deposits, and describes intercooler-condensation-related stalling in some years. Because the article does not specify those years, check the exact vehicle and its records rather than assuming the claim applies to every first-generation 3.5L EcoBoost.

12. Chevrolet 6.2L Diesel V8

The article cites injection-pump, harmonic-damper, and crankshaft concerns, alongside low output. It reports 130 horsepower, 300 lb-ft of torque, and 25–30 mpg for this engine; those figures are Gadget Review’s, not independently verified here, and the article does not state the conditions behind the fuel-economy range.

13. Dodge 3.7L Magnum V6

Gadget Review cites valve-seat and lifter concerns, as well as oil consumption. The entry does not establish the affected population or a failure rate.

14. GM 350 Diesel V8 (Oldsmobile Diesel)

The article alleges that the gasoline-derived design had shortcomings that contributed to head-bolt and gasket failures, and cites fuel-system damage. It also claims that most engines failed before 80,000 miles and that repairs often exceeded $4,000. Those are the article’s figures, not independently verified fleet statistics, so they should not be treated as a measured failure rate or typical repair bill.

What the list can—and cannot—tell you

The entries identify concerns attributed to particular engine names, but they do not form a like-for-like reliability comparison. The article gives no common scoring method, and the failure claims do not establish prevalence, repair rates, or comparative severity across the 14 engines. A list position is therefore not a probability that a specific truck will fail.

For a used-truck decision, compare the exact model year and engine variant, the vehicle’s documented service and repair history, and the condition of the truck you are considering. An engine’s reputation is a reason to investigate, not a substitute for vehicle-specific evidence.

How to check a truck before buying

  1. Confirm the configuration. Identify the truck’s model year and exact engine variant using its vehicle records and identification details. Do not assume a broad engine-family label covers every year or version.
  2. Review maintenance and repair records. Look for documentation relevant to the concerns raised for that engine, and note gaps in the history. A seller’s general assurance is not the same as a service record.
  3. Check the VIN for recalls. Use NHTSA’s VIN lookup as one source of vehicle-specific information. NHTSA says its lookup may not show recalls that have already been repaired, some recently announced campaigns, or recalls more than 15 years old, among other exclusions. A clean lookup is not a complete reliability assessment.
  4. Interpret complaints cautiously. NHTSA uses complaints and other information in screening and investigations; an individual complaint is not proof of a defect. The agency says there is no fixed complaint count that automatically triggers review: the decision depends on the vehicle population and the severity of potential consequences.
  5. Get the truck’s condition assessed. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the specific vehicle and investigate any symptoms or unresolved questions before purchase. A model-level list cannot establish the condition of an individual truck.

NHTSA also publishes recall, investigation, complaint, and manufacturer-communication data. Counts in those records are not failure probabilities by themselves: interpreting them that way requires a defined issue and a valid count of the vehicles at risk.
