Some rare cars are scarce because only a handful were built; others are one-off prototypes, lost vehicles, or machines that rarely leave private collections. There is no verified, universal ranking of the world’s rarest cars—and the evidence available for this title confirms only four specific models, not a definitive 13-car lineup. Here are those documented examples, with the kind of rarity and the limits of each claim made clear.
What makes a car rare?
Rarity can describe different things: a small production run, a low number of surviving examples, a one-off build, or a car that is missing or difficult for the public to see. Those measures are not interchangeable. A high auction price may reflect demand as well as scarcity, and it does not establish a car as the rarest in the world.
The examples below are organized by the evidence that makes each notable. Counts and sale prices are attributed to the manufacturer or auction house that reported them; they are not presented as an independent census or current market valuation.
Rare cars with documented production or survival figures
Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic
Bugatti says three Type 57 SC Atlantic cars were made for customers, making the model exceptionally scarce by production count. The manufacturer has separately stated that two original examples survive. Its account identifies the second-built car, known as La Voiture Noire, as missing since 1938 and presumed lost during World War II. These are Bugatti’s figures and account, not an independently verified census. Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic history.

Ferrari 250 GTO
RM Sotheby’s describes the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO as one of 36 built. That is a small production total, but it is not a count of surviving cars. A specific 250 GTO sold for $48.4 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale in August 2018. That is a historical auction result, not a current estimate of the model’s value. One-off prototypes and competition cars
Aston Martin DP215
RM Sotheby’s describes the DP215 as a one-off 1963 Grand Touring Competition Prototype. Its uniqueness comes from one-off status, rather than a low run of production cars. RM Sotheby’s reported a sale price of $21,455,000 in 2018; that figure records a particular past transaction, not a current valuation. RM Sotheby’s 2018 Monterey lot.

Aston Martin DBR1/1
The DBR1/1 has both competition significance and a documented auction history. RM Sotheby’s reports that it won overall at the 1959 Nürburgring 1000 KM. The same auction house reports that the car sold for $22.55 million at auction in 2017. The race result distinguishes its history; the sale price is a dated transaction, not a measure of rarity by itself. RM Sotheby’s 2017 Monterey lot.
How to read rarity claims
- Production count: how many were built. It does not tell you how many remain.
- Survival count: how many are believed to exist today. Attribute the figure to its source, especially when it comes from a manufacturer rather than an independent census.
- One-off status: a vehicle may be unique because it was built as a single prototype, even if it was not part of a production run.
- Missing status: a lost car cannot be seen, but its disappearance is a different kind of rarity from a surviving car held privately.
- Auction history: a reported sale documents a transaction at a particular time. It neither establishes a current value nor supplies a production or survival count.
Whether you can see a rare car in person also depends on where it is kept and whether it appears at public events or exhibitions. A low build count alone does not establish public access, and no exhibition schedule or collection location is confirmed here.

Why this is not a definitive list of 13
The title’s 13-car lineup is not established by the available primary-source evidence. The four entries above can be supported with model-specific production, one-off, race-history, or auction facts, but naming nine more cars as though they were part of a verified list would imply a completeness the evidence does not support. Nor do these examples form a ranked list of the world’s rarest cars.
