Thirteen vehicles announced or previewed for 2025 and 2026 point to the industry’s biggest shifts: electric cars are spreading into smaller segments, automakers are mixing plug-in and non-plug-in powertrains, and software and charging access are becoming part of the product pitch. This is a watch list, not a ranking or proof that any model has changed the market. The dates and specifications below are company announcements; where a source does not confirm current showroom availability, that uncertainty is stated.
Which 13 vehicles are worth watching?
The list spans North American launch plans and Volkswagen concepts aimed at other markets. “Announced” means an automaker described a production vehicle or launch plan; it does not establish that the car is currently on sale. “Concept” means the source presents a preview rather than a confirmed production specification.
| Vehicle | Status and market timing in the cited announcement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Honda 0 SUV | Honda announced a production model for North America in the first half of 2026, followed by other global markets. The January 2025 announcement does not establish current availability. | Honda presented it as a mid-size battery-electric SUV on a dedicated EV architecture, with steer-by-wire and ASIMO OS among its planned technologies. These are development claims, not independent assessments of the finished vehicle. |
| Honda 0 Saloon | Honda announced a North American introduction in late 2026, followed by global markets. The cited announcement does not confirm that the launch has occurred. | The flagship electric sedan’s low, wedge-shaped design contrasts with the SUV-heavy launch pipeline. Honda also described software and driver-assistance ambitions; those intentions are not evidence of production capability or performance. |
| Toyota bZ Woodland | Toyota scheduled a North American launch for early 2026. Its 2025 announcement does not confirm current dealer availability. | This battery-electric SUV emphasizes all-wheel drive and utility. Toyota lists a 74.7-kWh battery, about 260 miles of range for the AWD model, and 30 cu. ft. of luggage capacity. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Toyota also announced NACS DC charging and battery preconditioning. |
| Toyota C-HR BEV | Toyota identified it as part of its North American battery-electric lineup alongside the bZ and bZ Woodland. The cited lineup announcement does not establish a specific launch date or current availability. | Its inclusion signals an effort to add a smaller-bodied electric option, but the cited announcement provides too little model-specific detail to assess range, price, or equipment. |
| Nissan LEAF, third generation | Nissan described the new LEAF as a forthcoming North American model; the cited announcement does not establish current sale status. | Nissan recast the family-oriented EV as a crossover on its CMF-EV platform and said the North American version would use a NACS port. The company expected better range than the prior generation, but the announcement did not provide a range figure, so there is no basis here for a numerical comparison. |
| Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid | Nissan announced its first North American plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), based on the Rogue compact SUV. The cited announcement does not establish a price, detailed specifications, or current availability. | A plug-in option in a mainstream compact-SUV line would give buyers a choice between charging for electric driving and relying on liquid fuel for longer trips. The announcement does not quantify electric-only range or fuel economy. |
| Nissan Rogue with e-POWER | Nissan planned to offer e-POWER in the fourth-generation Rogue alongside internal-combustion and plug-in-hybrid versions. The cited announcement does not confirm current availability. | In Nissan’s description, an electric motor drives the wheels while a gasoline engine supplies power. That is not a plug-in EV: the cited explanation does not describe a charging port or an externally rechargeable battery. |
| Volkswagen ID. Polo | Volkswagen announced a small electric car with launch planned from 2026; the cited announcement does not establish current availability or final local specifications. | Using the familiar Polo name for an electric model is part of VW’s plan to connect its electric and combustion lineups. CEO Thomas Schäfer said in September 2025, “The ID. Polo is just the beginning.” |
| Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI | Shown among Volkswagen’s near-production compact models; the cited material treats it as a preview, not a confirmed local production specification. | An electric GTI would extend a performance badge into the compact EV segment. The preview alone does not establish final power, range, price, or market availability. |
| Volkswagen ID. CROSS | Concept. Volkswagen presented it as a near-production compact-SUV concept in its IAA material, within a small-car and compact-EV wave planned from 2026. | It signals an effort to bring electric SUVs into a smaller, more accessible segment. Concept status means its appearance and positioning should not be read as a final specification or confirmed retail offer. |
| Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 | Concept. Volkswagen included it in its planned compact-model push; the cited material does not confirm a production specification or launch date. | The entry-level concept makes affordability part of the company’s stated ambition, but no final price is established in the cited material. |
| Volkswagen ID.3 Neo | Volkswagen announced an updated compact battery-electric car in 2026. The cited announcement gives specifications but does not establish current availability in every market. | VW lists net battery options of 50, 58, and 79 kWh. The company claims up to 630 km of range for the 79-kWh version; that figure is configuration-specific and manufacturer-stated. VW also describes optional connected driver assistance, one-pedal driving, and vehicle-to-load capability, which can power external devices using an adapter. |
| 2026 Toyota Prius | Covered by a Toyota USA 2025 model-year page, but the cited page could not be independently accessed. Current availability and the page’s figures are therefore not confirmed here. | It broadens the list beyond plug-in vehicles: the Prius is a conventional hybrid, not a battery EV or plug-in hybrid. It is a model-year evolution rather than evidence of a wholly new disruptive platform. No fuel-economy or price figure is included because the available source record could not be verified. |
What the powertrain labels mean for a buyer
“Electrified” can describe vehicles that behave very differently. The International Energy Agency (IEA) distinguishes plug-in electric vehicles from hybrids that cannot be charged from an external power source. Nissan’s explanation of e-POWER adds another case: an engine supplies electricity while an electric motor drives the wheels.
- Battery electric vehicle (BEV): The vehicle runs on electricity stored in a battery that is charged from an external source. The Honda 0 models, Toyota bZ Woodland and C-HR BEV, Nissan LEAF, and Volkswagen ID models in this list are presented as battery-electric vehicles or concepts.
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV): It can be charged externally and also has a combustion engine. Nissan announced a PHEV Rogue, but its cited announcement does not state electric-only range or charging details.
- Conventional hybrid: It combines a combustion engine and electric motor but is not an externally chargeable plug-in vehicle. Toyota’s Prius entry represents this category.
- Series-hybrid-style system: In Nissan’s e-POWER description, the electric motor turns the wheels and the gasoline engine supplies power. It should not be described as a plug-in EV on the basis of that explanation.
Why a crowded launch pipeline matters—and what it cannot prove
The IEA’s 2025 outlook counted nearly 785 available electric-car models in 2024, a 15% increase over 2023, and projected that the count could exceed 1,000 by 2026. Its model count includes brand models with at least one new registration in a given year, rather than each trim; for 2025–2027, it uses announced launches. The IEA also cautions that a model may be undercounted if it was offered but had no registrations.

That forecast describes a wider choice of models, not a guarantee that every announced vehicle will reach showrooms on schedule. It also does not show that a particular vehicle will sell well or force competitors to change. The list’s significance is in the directions it illustrates: compact EVs, electric SUVs, multiple degrees of electrification in one vehicle line, and manufacturer attention to charging and software.

How to judge the claims before choosing a car
- Check status and location: A North American launch plan does not establish availability in Europe or another market. Concept and near-production vehicles are not retail vehicles with finalized specifications.
- Keep range claims in context: Toyota’s approximate 260-mile figure applies to the bZ Woodland AWD, while Volkswagen’s up-to-630-km figure applies to the ID.3 Neo’s 79-kWh configuration. Both are manufacturer claims; the cited material does not supply a common independent test basis for comparing them.
- Verify charging compatibility locally: Toyota announced NACS DC charging for the bZ Woodland, and Nissan described a NACS port for the North American LEAF. Connector access and charging capability are model- and market-specific; neither announcement by itself establishes charging speed or access at a particular station.
- Separate features from validated performance: Software, driver assistance, steer-by-wire, preconditioning, and vehicle-to-load are equipment or development claims. Their presence, availability, and behavior can depend on trim, software, and region.
- Wait for final commercial details: The cited announcements do not provide comparable final transaction prices, independent real-world range tests, sales results, or current dealer inventory for this group.
