Several models show strong long-ownership or high-mileage signals, but no make or model guarantees a car will last 15 years. The Toyota Prius led an iSeeCars study of original-owner retention: 13.7% of 15-year-old-or-older Priuses in its sample were still with their first owners, versus 6.1% of vehicles overall. That measures who kept the car—not whether every example remained mechanically sound.

The 13 models below are a qualified shortlist drawn from separate studies of long-term ownership, observed odometer readings, and modeled odds of reaching 250,000 miles. Those measures are related, not interchangeable; the condition and maintenance history of the specific car you buy matter more than a model’s position in a ranking.

What “lasting 15 years” means in the available data

A car can remain with its original owner for 15 years without being driven unusually far, while a high-mileage car may have changed hands several times. The cited studies measure different outcomes:

  • Original-owner retention: iSeeCars examined more than 660,000 cars from model years 1981–2005 sold in 2020. It found that 6.1% of vehicles in the study were kept by their original owners for 15 years or longer. This is a retention measure, not a mechanical survival rate. See the iSeeCars retention study.
  • Potential lifespan: A separate iSeeCars analysis reports mileage-based lifespan figures derived from odometer observations. These are not guarantees or maximum lifespans. See the iSeeCars lifespan study.
  • Chance of reaching 250,000 miles: iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis used odometer readings and proprietary modeling to estimate probabilities. It analyzed more than 395 million vehicles; its results are model estimates, not promises for a specific car. See the 2026 mileage analysis.

The retention study is historical evidence about older cars sold in 2020, not a forecast for new cars or every model year. Mileage rankings aggregate vehicles across years and do not prove that every trim, engine, or powertrain performs alike.

#1 Best Overall
TowerTop 2/10/25 Amp 12V Smart Car Battery Charger, Fully Automatic Battery Maintainer with Engine Start, Auto Desulfator, Battery Repair, Winter Mode, for AGM, STD, Gel, Deep Cycle Batteries
  • Efficient, Energy-Saving, and Fast Charging: The TowerTop 12v battery charger offers 4 adjustable current settings (2A/10A/25A/AUTO) to meet your diverse needs. With a max charging current of 25A, you can fully charge a 100Ah battery in under 3.5 hours. Achieving an 85% charging efficiency (industry average 75%), this battery chargers is more efficient, increasing charging speed by 1640% compared to 2A car battery charger. Not only is it energy-efficient, but it also saves you a lot of wait time
  • Fully Automatic Charging for Convenience and Safety: This 12 volt battery charger automatically detects battery status and starts charging automatically within 30 seconds if you forget to press Start. After a full charge, it enters pulse repair mode, turns off the screen to save energy, and maintains a safe voltage for long-term storage. If voltage drops, it restores full power. The smart battery charger also remembers your last settings, ensuring seamless operation even after a power outage
  • All-in-One Compatible Design: Designed for 12V sealed lead-acid batteries in cars, boats, RVs, power sports, and deep-cycle batteries, including 12V STD, AGM, GEL, Wet, MF, EFB, calcium and deep-cycle batteries
  • HD LCD Screen and 8-Stage Intelligent Charging: With true 8-stage smart charging (desulfurization, soft start, bulk charge, absorption, analysis, repair, float, and pulse maintenance), it optimizes battery life and repairs batteries without overcharging or damaging them. The HD LCD screen allows you to view the charging stage and parameters at any time rather than leaving you guessing, keeping you informed of the charging status
  • Battery Repair: Independent desulfurization and repair buttons allow you to manually desulfurize and repair your battery to restore lost battery performance, helping to revive old/idle batteries and extend battery life. If your battery cannot be charged, you can try the "repair" mode to fix it. Note: It cannot repair completely drained batteries

13 cars with long-ownership or high-mileage evidence

This list combines the retention study with the separate mileage findings. A blank mileage entry means the cited lifespan top-20 list did not establish a figure for that model; it does not mean the car cannot reach high mileage.

Model Original-owner retention Reported mileage finding
Toyota Prius 13.7% of 15-year-old-or-older vehicles in the study remained with original owners; highest in that ranking. Potential lifespan: 250,601 miles in the separate lifespan study.
Toyota Highlander 12.4%; second in the retention ranking. The mileage study lists the Highlander Hybrid at 244,994 miles; this is a different entry from the Highlander.
Toyota Tacoma 11.6%. Potential lifespan: 235,070 miles.
Toyota Sienna 11.5%. Potential lifespan: 239,607 miles.
Toyota Tundra 11.3%. Potential lifespan: 256,022 miles.
Honda CR-V 10.7%. No figure established in the cited lifespan study’s top 20.
Honda Pilot 10.4%. Potential lifespan: 236,807 miles.
Subaru Forester 9.8%. No figure established in the cited lifespan study’s top 20.
Toyota 4Runner 9.4%. 2026 modeled chance of reaching 250,000 miles: 33.1%.
Toyota Sequoia 9.1%. Potential lifespan: 296,509 miles in the lifespan study; 2026 modeled chance of reaching 250,000 miles: 42.3%.
Toyota Land Cruiser Not listed among the retention leaders cited here. Potential lifespan: 280,236 miles.
Toyota Avalon Not listed among the retention leaders cited here. Potential lifespan: 245,710 miles; the 2026 study reports a 23.2% chance for the large-car segment leader.
Toyota Camry Hybrid Not listed among the retention leaders cited here. Potential lifespan: 230,547 miles. This result should not be generalized to every Camry powertrain or model year.

Retention percentages come from the older-car study; potential-lifespan figures come from a separate analysis; and 250,000-mile probabilities come from the 2026 model. The samples and methods differ, so the figures should not be compared as if they were a single ranking. In the 2026 study, the average vehicle had an estimated 5.4% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, compared with 42.3% for the Sequoia.

How to choose among these models

Start with the kind of vehicle you actually need, then judge the individual example—not just its model name or a study result.

  • COMPLETE PACKAGE: Includes (1) SC1280 Battery Charger and Maintainer, (1) user manual
  • Match the body style to the job. A Prius or Avalon may suit different passenger and cargo needs than a Tacoma, Tundra, or three-row SUV. Toyota models feature prominently in the cited studies, and three-row SUVs were common among the older lifespan study’s top 20.
  • Compare the exact year and powertrain. A hybrid result does not establish the same outcome for a conventional engine, and an aggregate model ranking does not establish how each year or trim performs.
  • Review condition and maintenance records. Look for documentation tied to the actual vehicle and its service history. High mileage or long ownership is a useful signal, not a substitute for a vehicle-specific inspection.
  • Check recalls and reliability for the exact model year. The cited studies do not establish repair costs, safety, or year-by-year reliability for all 13 models.
  • Account for total ownership needs. Consider purchase price, fuel use, expected repair needs, and whether the vehicle’s maintenance schedule is practical for you.

Maintenance that supports a longer service life

Use the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for the exact make and model. AAA notes that schedules distinguish normal from severe driving conditions, so follow the one that matches how the car is actually used rather than applying a generic interval to every vehicle. Read AAA’s maintenance guidance.

Check tire pressure with a gauge and use the pressure listed on the vehicle’s door placard or in its owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire. A digital tire-pressure gauge is one practical way to take that measurement; the gauge itself does not extend a car’s life. See AAA’s tire-pressure instructions.
