Can you use a 120V blanket in a car?
Not directly from a standard 12V accessory socket. A 120V AC blanket needs a 120V AC source. An inverter is one possible way to provide AC, but there is no blanket-specific, one-size-fits-all inverter recommendation established here. Before considering one, check the blanket’s input requirements, the inverter’s continuous rating, how it connects to the vehicle, the vehicle’s limits, and all relevant manuals.
How to choose a 12V blanket for your vehicle
- Confirm the power type. The product label or manual should say 12V DC and identify a compatible vehicle accessory outlet. Do not rely on a product being called a “travel” or “car” blanket without checking.
- Check the vehicle outlet. Verify the outlet type and any vehicle-specific limits in the owner’s manual. Confirm the blanket’s plug fits properly and is intended for that outlet.
- Read the model’s electrical specifications. Check its current or wattage and fuse requirements. For example, the Ultra Performance 39002/39003 manual lists 50 W, maximum current below 4.5 A, and an 8 A fuse; those figures apply to those models, not to 12V blankets generally.
- Check operating and care rules. Look for instructions on engine-on use, unattended operation, folding, washing, and storage. Follow the exact product manual rather than assuming another blanket’s rules apply.
For a documented vehicle-specific example, the Schumacher 1222U manual identifies the product as a 12V heated blanket and directs users to the vehicle’s 12V DC accessory outlet.

Will a 12V heated blanket drain the car battery?
A 12V blanket draws power from the vehicle electrical system, but the exact draw depends on the model. The Ultra Performance manual’s figures—50 W and maximum current below 4.5 A—are specific to models 39002/39003, not a universal estimate. Without a blanket’s actual rating and the vehicle’s operating conditions, it is not possible to state how quickly it would affect a particular battery.
Some manuals give explicit engine-use instructions. Schumacher says to start the vehicle before plugging in model 1222U and recommends use from the 12V socket of a running vehicle. Follow your own blanket’s instructions; do not transfer that rule to every model as though it were universal.

Safe use depends on the exact blanket
Schumacher’s model 1222U manual says to use the blanket as a covering, not to lie on it, not to use it folded or scrunched, and to unplug it when the vehicle is unattended or the blanket is not in use. It also warns against use if the blanket is wet or damaged. These are instructions for that model; check your own manual for its specific restrictions.
- Use only the voltage and power connection specified by the manufacturer.
- Inspect the blanket, cord, and plug for damage, and follow the product’s wet-use and cleaning restrictions.
- Do not leave it powered when unattended unless its manufacturer explicitly permits that use.
- Unplug it when it is not in use, in keeping with the product instructions.
Passenger blankets and battery blankets are different products
A 120V battery blanket is designed to warm a vehicle battery in cold conditions, not to keep an occupant warm. Ram/Mopar describes AC-powered battery blankets as an aid to cold-weather starting, while Chevrolet lists an 80-watt wraparound battery blanket that plugs into a standard outlet to maintain battery temperature. What to choose
- Choose a 12V DC vehicle blanket if you want direct use from a compatible vehicle accessory socket and the blanket’s manual permits that use.
- Choose a 120V AC blanket when you have a suitable AC outlet and the blanket is intended for that setting. It is not a direct 12V-socket option.
