Buying a supercar used can make an otherwise out-of-reach model attainable, but it does not make specialist servicing, insurance, parts or repairs inexpensive. This UK-oriented shortlist draws on PistonHeads’ 2026 used-supercar guide; it is an editorial selection, not a reliability ranking or a claim that every example is a bargain. “Supercar” has no universally agreed boundary, and prices, availability and ownership costs vary by market and individual car.
What makes a used supercar worth buying?
The right choice depends on what you want from the car: usable road performance, open-top theatre, track focus, heritage, or a distinctive engine and drivetrain. PistonHeads’ 2026 guide illustrates that variety, from a raw V10 to a modern mid-engined hybrid of road and track priorities. Use the models below as candidates to investigate, not as a ranking of reliability, depreciation or total cost.
Set a firm purchase ceiling before browsing and keep a separate reserve for insurance, tax, servicing, parts and repairs. Top Gear’s advice is to find a suitable specialist, drive more than one example if possible, review the paperwork and arrange an independent health check. Its blunt rule—“DO NOT BUY THE FIRST ONE YOU SEE”—is a useful safeguard against letting the occasion outrun your judgment. Top Gear’s used-supercar buying guide

1. Lotus Esprit
A mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat choice for buyers drawn to classic styling and a sense of occasion. PistonHeads notes that four-cylinder versions do not deliver the V8’s supercar-level performance, so choose with the specific engine and performance expectation in mind.
2. McLaren 650S Spider
The open-top version pairs a mid-engined layout with a carbon-fibre structure. PistonHeads noted UK examples below £100,000 in its guide, but that is a dated editorial observation, not a current quote or a measure of likely running costs. Have a McLaren specialist assess the structure and systems before purchase.

3. Ferrari 458 Italia
A mid-engined Ferrari with a dual-clutch gearbox and enduring desirability, according to PistonHeads. The guide’s UK market context put examples above £100,000; treat that as a dated observation rather than a present-day price benchmark.
4. Maserati MC20
This clean-sheet, mid-engined model pairs a turbocharged V6 with a dual-clutch transmission. PistonHeads describes it as an unusual used-market candidate. Its relative rarity may make the availability of specialist support and parts in your area especially important to establish before committing.

5. Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica
PistonHeads characterizes the Tecnica as combining the Performante’s power, Evo usability and STO track learnings, with rear-wheel drive. That mix may appeal to a buyer wanting road use alongside track-oriented character; inspect the individual car’s history and condition rather than relying on its specification alone.
6. Porsche Carrera GT
A motorsport-derived engine and manual gearbox are central to its appeal. PistonHeads also flags the carbon clutch and the model’s history of serious incidents. The guide reported a recent recall on its featured UK example; check the individual car’s VIN with Porsche or the relevant authority and obtain documentary proof that any applicable recall work is complete.

8. Aston Martin Vanquish
The guide describes the Vanquish as a handsome, fast older Aston. Age and specification make the condition and maintenance record central to any decision; establish what support is available for the particular model year rather than assuming all Vanquishes have the same needs.

9–12. Expand the shortlist only with verified candidates
The PistonHeads guide also discusses the seven models above, but the available model-specific evidence does not establish four further candidates and their strengths. Rather than inventing picks or presenting unsupported reliability claims, use the same selection test to build the remaining shortlist from cars available in your market: define your intended use, identify a specialist, and compare inspected examples with complete records. The broader list is an editorial set, not a canonical twelve-model definition of a supercar.

Set the budget around ownership, not just the asking price
- Set a hard maximum purchase price and a separate reserve for insurance, tax, servicing, parts and repairs.
- Ask an independent specialist what servicing and repair support exists for the exact model in your location.
- Allow for downtime and repair uncertainty; a low asking price cannot establish that a car will be inexpensive to own.
Compare cars and review their histories
- Drive more than one example when possible. Assess whether the controls, drivetrain, brakes and suspension behave as expected.
- Review invoices and service records, verify mileage and ownership history, and ask directly about accidents and repairs.
- Do not treat a seller’s assurance of a “clean history” as proof that no damage occurred. Damage-record databases only reveal incidents recorded in the records available to them.
Commission a specialist inspection
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a technician familiar with the model. A clean-looking exterior cannot rule out hidden structural damage or expensive specialist work. Carbon structures, ceramic brakes and complex electronics call for expertise appropriate to the car. John Thorne, a McLaren specialist quoted by evo, argues for the same scrutiny a buyer would expect in a property survey; evo’s McLaren 650S buying guide describes the potential for costly remedial work.
Check recalls and pause over warning signs
- Check open recalls against the car’s VIN with the manufacturer or relevant regulator, and request proof of completed work.
- Pause if the seller refuses a proper independent inspection, paperwork is incomplete, mileage has unexplained gaps, or repairs are not accounted for.
- Do not proceed until a specialist has explained any unresolved issue and its likely scope.
How to interpret damage statistics and market prices
In figures reported by evo in 2025, carVertical found recorded damage for 16.55% of Bentley, 16.42% of Lamborghini, 16.36% of Maserati and 16.3% of Lotus cars checked in its dataset. These are shares among vehicles checked by that provider, not estimates for every car of those marques. They reflect available records; an absence of a damage record does not prove that a vehicle was never damaged. evo’s report on carVertical damage data
Likewise, an asking-price example in an article is not a market average or a current valuation. Availability, condition and warranties vary by car and market, while recall completion and service terms can depend on the individual VIN. Verify current local listings and manufacturer information before treating any listing as a realistic purchase option.
Make the shortlist fit your use
Before choosing a model, decide whether the car is primarily for everyday road use, weekend drives, touring or track days. Then weigh its body style and drivetrain against your budget, tolerance for downtime, access to specialists and willingness to accept repair uncertainty. A well-documented, independently inspected example that suits your use is a stronger prospect than a more glamorous car bought on price alone.
