The last diesel-powered U.S.-market sedan disappeared after the 2019 model year, leaving buyers with a very different kind of diesel lineup: full-size pickups, heavy-duty work trucks, and large body-on-frame SUVs.
That makes the word “cars” somewhat loose here. These were the 12 distinct 2024 nameplates and variants that represented the remaining factory-new diesel choices in America. Availability was not always unlimited, especially late in the model year, when some GM SUV order books had already closed.

1. 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Duramax
The Silverado 1500 was the rare half-ton pickup that still offered a diesel engine in 2024. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged Duramax inline-six produced 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, giving it a useful middle ground between gasoline half-tons and far more expensive heavy-duty trucks.

2. 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Duramax
The mechanically related Sierra 1500 used the same 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six and the same 305-hp, 495-lb-ft output. GMC made the diesel available on every Sierra 1500 trim except the base Sierra, so shoppers had more upscale configurations to choose from than in the Chevrolet range.
This was still a half-ton truck rather than a heavy-duty tow rig. Its appeal was the combination of diesel torque, a relatively manageable truck size, and better suitability for everyday driving than a 2500- or 3500-series pickup.
3. 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD Duramax
For substantially heavier work, Chevrolet offered the 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 in the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD. The revised diesel made 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, the heavy-duty Silverado could tow up to 36,000 pounds.

Buyers considering one should compare the truck’s exact cab, axle, drivetrain, and hitch configuration rather than relying on the model name alone.
4. 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD Duramax
GMC’s heavy-duty twins used the same updated 6.6-liter Duramax V-8, producing 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. The diesel was available across the Sierra HD’s trims and cab configurations, making it possible to pair the engine with work-oriented or more heavily equipped versions.
The Sierra HD offered the same basic capability as its Chevrolet counterpart. The difference was primarily in styling, equipment, and dealer preference—not the fundamental diesel hardware or maximum output.

5. 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty Power Stroke
Ford’s F-250 could be ordered with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel in two outputs. The standard-output version generated 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, while the high-output version produced 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft.
The F-250 remained Ford’s three-quarter-ton Super Duty, positioned below the F-350 in payload and axle ratings. It was the logical choice for buyers who needed more than an F-150 but did not require the highest-rated configuration in the Super Duty range.
6. 2024 Ford F-350 Super Duty Power Stroke
The F-350 offered both versions of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke. Depending on configuration, buyers could choose the 475-hp standard-output engine or the 500-hp high-output version with 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
Compared with the F-250, the F-350’s heavier-duty configurations were better suited to demanding payload and trailer applications. As with every truck in this class, the actual rating depended on cab style, bed length, rear axle ratio, drivetrain, and equipment.
7. 2024 Ford F-450 Super Duty Power Stroke
The F-450 was Ford’s maximum-capability pickup and came with the high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel. Its rating was 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
That output was shared with the high-output F-250 and F-350, but the F-450’s chassis and running gear made it the specialist of the group. It was aimed at buyers regularly moving very large fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers rather than drivers seeking a comfortable daily-use pickup.

8. 2024 Ram 2500 Cummins
Ram’s diesel option in the 2500 was a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel inline-six producing 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the selected configuration, the Ram 2500 could be ordered with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
The Cummins remained one of the recognizable names in American diesel pickups, but the Ram 2500’s exact towing and payload numbers varied widely. Buyers should check the door-jamb payload label and the manufacturer’s towing chart for the specific truck, especially when matching it to a fifth-wheel trailer.
9. 2024 Ram 3500 Cummins
The Ram 3500 expanded the Cummins range with a standard-output version making 370 hp and 850 lb-ft, plus a high-output version rated at 400 hp and 1,075 lb-ft. With the high-output diesel and the right equipment, maximum towing reached 37,090 pounds.

10. 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe Duramax
The Tahoe was one of the few remaining diesel-powered SUVs in the United States. Its 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six made 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Rear-drive versions were rated as high as 24 mpg combined, while four-wheel-drive versions reached up to 22 mpg combined. The diesel was not available on the off-road-oriented Z71 trim for 2024, so buyers seeking that package had to choose another engine.

- EASY USE AT EVERY FILL-UP: Add directly to the fuel tank at each fill-up. The long neck and measuring chamber make treating fuel simple. One 40 oz bottle treats up to 400 gallons
- FOR ALL DIESEL ENGINES: Suitable for use in all diesel vehicles and equipment - light-duty, heavy-duty, pickup, SUV, van, RV, etc. (including modern HPCR systems)
- IMPROVES LUBRICITY (ASTM D6079): Tested to improve lubricity by 43% to help protect fuel system components, including wear-sensitive parts like the CP4 pump
- BOOSTS CETANE UP TO +8: Raises cetane up to 8 points for faster ignition, smoother combustion, and improved drivability; many engines run best around 48–50 while pump diesel is often 40–45
- CLEANS INJECTORS: AR6500's detergent package removes injector deposits and restores spray patterns for improved atomization, supporting better performance and fuel economy
The Tahoe’s diesel made the most sense for long highway trips, frequent towing, or drivers who wanted a large SUV without automatically stepping up to a gasoline V-8.
11. 2024 Chevrolet Suburban Duramax
The Suburban used the same 277-hp, 460-lb-ft Duramax inline-six as the Tahoe. It was available on every 2024 trim except the Z71 and could tow up to 8,000 pounds when properly equipped.
The important distinction was size. The Suburban’s extended body provided substantially more cargo room behind the third row than the Tahoe, making the diesel option particularly useful for large families, road trips, and owners who needed passenger space without giving up towing ability.

Both the standard-wheelbase Yukon and longer Yukon XL could be equipped with GM’s 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six. As in the Chevrolet SUVs, the engine produced 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The Yukon’s maximum tow rating was 8,100 pounds. The Yukon XL added considerably more cargo space than the standard Yukon, while retaining the same basic diesel powertrain. Trim and equipment availability varied, and late in the 2024 model year some GM diesel SUV order books had closed as refreshed 2025 models approached.

The 2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV also offered the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac removed the diesel option for 2025, making 2024 the final model year for a new diesel Escalade.

- Cleans dirty injectors and prevents injector sticking in both High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) and older systems
- Removes both internal and external deposits on fuel injectors
- Restores lost power and fuel economy
- Contains Slickdiesel Lubricator to protect fuel pumps and injectors from increased wear caused by poor quality Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel
- Effective in all diesel fuels, including ULSD, biodiesel and biodiesel blends
That creates two legitimate ways to count the final diesel vehicles. If body styles are counted separately, the Escalade and Escalade ESV can take the place of two separately listed Ford Super Duty entries. This article counts the Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 as distinct nameplates and groups the two Escalade body styles together as an additional note.
Diesel models that were not available new for 2024
Several familiar names are easy to include by mistake:
- Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel: The 3.0-liter diesel ended after the 2023 model year.
- Ram 1500 EcoDiesel: Ram discontinued the half-ton diesel after 2023. The 2024 diesel Ram choices were the 2500 and 3500.
- Diesel passenger sedans: The last diesel sedan sold in the U.S. was discontinued after the 2019 model year.
It is also inaccurate to say that the Silverado 1500 was the only diesel vehicle left in America. It was the only remaining half-ton diesel pickup in the comparison discussed at the time, but heavy-duty Ford, GM, and Ram pickups and several GM full-size SUVs were still available.
Important buying considerations
- Confirm that the vehicle was actually available. A model could appear in the 2024 catalog even after factory order books closed. Dealer inventory, production timing, and regional availability mattered.
- Match the truck to the trailer. A diesel engine alone does not determine towing capacity. Check the exact configuration’s tow rating, payload rating, hitch limits, and tongue weight.
- Do not expect EPA numbers for every heavy-duty pickup. Some heavy-duty diesels, including Ram 2500 and 3500 models, exceed the EPA’s applicable commercial-vehicle threshold. The absence of an EPA fuel-economy rating does not mean the truck gets zero mpg or that its efficiency was overlooked because it was poor.
- Budget for diesel-specific maintenance. Modern diesels use emissions equipment and fluids that gasoline vehicles do not, and repairs can be expensive. A diesel is most defensible when its torque, towing ability, or highway range will be used regularly.

The Bottom Line
America’s 2024 diesel market was not really a car market anymore. It was a narrow but capable group of GM SUVs, half-ton GM pickups, and heavy-duty Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram trucks. The Silverado and Sierra 1500 diesels were the most approachable choices for everyday driving, while the Super Duty, HD, and Ram 3500 models served buyers with genuinely demanding towing needs. For luxury SUV shoppers, 2024 was also the final opportunity to buy a new diesel Cadillac Escalade.
