The Ford Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964, but Ford sold it as a 1965 model. Its quick start, wide range of options and evolving performance trims helped make it one of the most recognizable names in American cars. Here are 12 facts that explain its origins and connect them to Ford’s 2026 US lineup.
How the Mustang began
1. It debuted at the New York World’s Fair
Ford unveiled the Mustang on April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair. The date marks the car’s public debut and sales launch. Ford’s history page identifies the occasion.
2. It was sold as a 1965 model
Although the Mustang went on sale in April 1964, Ford described the launch car as a 1965 model in its milestones document. That early calendar-year timing is why some people informally call the first cars “1964½.” It is a convenient nickname, not the model-year designation Ford used.
3. The first body styles were a hardtop and a convertible
At launch, buyers could choose between a hardtop and a convertible. The Mustang’s familiar fastback shape was not part of the opening-day lineup.

4. The fastback arrived in June 1964
Ford’s timeline places the fastback’s arrival in June 1964, after the initial launch. It expanded the range rather than replacing either of the original body styles.
5. Ford listed the launch price as $2,368
Ford’s historical milestones document gives the original listed launch price as $2,368. That is the period price, not an inflation-adjusted comparison or a current-market value.

How quickly buyers responded
6. Ford recorded 22,000 orders on the first day
Ford’s milestones document reports 22,000 orders on launch day. The first-day figure helps explain why the Mustang’s debut became more than a media event: customers were ready to buy.
7. First-year sales exceeded 417,000, by Ford’s accounts
Ford’s 2013 milestones document reports 417,000 sales in the first 12 months. A separate 2021 Ford corporate history article says more than 418,000 Mustangs sold in the first year. The figures differ, so it is best to attribute them to their respective Ford sources rather than present them as a single reconciled total.

8. The launch-day TV campaign ran on all three major US networks
Ford says it advertised the Mustang on all three major US television networks on launch day, reaching more than 29 million viewers. The audience figure is Ford’s account of the campaign.
9. Ford expected fewer sales than it ultimately recorded
Ford’s sources also differ on the company’s original annual sales expectation: the milestones document gives about 100,000, while the 2021 corporate account describes an expectation of 150,000. Either estimate was far below the first-year totals reported by Ford, but the exact expectation depends on which Ford account is cited.

How the Mustang became a performance car
10. The 1969 Mach 1 could be ordered with a 428 Cobra Jet
Ford’s Mustang history page says buyers could order the 1969 Mach 1 with an optional 428 Cobra Jet rated at 335 horsepower. That rating applies to this engine option in that model year; it does not describe every 1969 Mustang and should not be directly compared with modern horsepower ratings without accounting for differences in measurement conventions.

Ford lists the 2026 Dark Horse SC at 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. It is a separate high-performance model, not the standard Mustang; these specifications are Ford’s US-market figures and should not be assumed to apply in every country.
