Car names can translate a word, point to an image, or blend terms from different languages. Toyota says Camry comes from Japanese kanmuri, meaning “crown”; Corolla refers to a flower’s ring of petals; and Prius means “prior” or “previous” in Latin. Volkswagen says Tiguan combines the German words for “tiger” and “iguana.” These are the automakers’ explanations of their naming choices, not claims that each name has only one possible interpretation.

12 car names and their stated meanings

Toyota’s historical name-origin list gives the following explanations and first-release dates. The dates below are the dates recorded by Toyota, not claims about current availability or model generations. Toyota also notes that some entries give only principal origins rather than exhaustive explanations.

Name Origin and meaning Automaker’s stated image or intent First release listed
Camry Toyota traces it to Japanese kanmuri (also rendered kamuri), meaning “crown.” A Japanese-language route to the same crown idea expressed directly by Crown. March 24, 1982
Corolla A corolla is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. Toyota says the name was intended to evoke a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car. November 5, 1966
Crown The English word “crown.” Toyota gives the name’s meaning as the same as the English word. January 7, 1955
Corona A corona is the ring of pearly light around the sun. Toyota says that image suited a robust, approachable family car. July 1, 1957
Corsa Toyota says Italian corsa means “race” or “run.” A name built around motion and speed. August 3, 1978
Celica Toyota says Spanish celica means “celestial” or “heavenly.” The stated meaning gives the name a skyward, otherworldly association. December 1, 1970
Prius Toyota says Latin prius means “prior” or “previous.” The explanation is a direct reference to what came before. December 10, 1997
Sienta A blend of Spanish siete (“seven”) and English “entertain.” Toyota’s explanation joins a number with an idea of enjoyment. September 29, 2003
Supra Toyota says Latin supra means “transcending” or “above.” A name that signals going beyond or being above. February 6, 1986
Auris A blend of Latin aurum (“gold”) and English “aura.” Toyota says the combination suggests a car with a distinct aura. October 23, 2006
Gaia Toyota says it was named after the earth goddess in Greek mythology. A mythological reference to the Earth. May 29, 1998
Alphard Toyota derives the name from Greek alpha. Toyota says it was intended to evoke the brightest star in a constellation. May 22, 2002

Direct words and translated meanings

Crown is simply the English word. Camry reaches a similar meaning by way of Toyota’s rendering of Japanese kanmuri. Corsa, Celica, Prius and Supra are explained through words Toyota associates with running or racing, the celestial, what came before, and what is above or transcendent.

Images from nature and mythology

Corolla and Corona point to different circular forms: one is a flower’s ring of petals, the other the pearly ring of light around the sun. Gaia invokes a Greek earth goddess, while Alphard draws on a star-related image in Toyota’s account.

Blends and wordplay

Sienta combines Spanish and English elements, and Auris joins a Latin word with an English one. These are not straightforward translations of a single word; the manufacturer describes them as constructed names with intended associations.

Two Volkswagen examples: Passat and Tiguan

Volkswagen offers two contrasting naming explanations. It says Passat, launched in 1973, takes its name from passatwinde, German for “trade winds.” Tiguan was selected through a reader poll and combines the German words for “tiger” and “iguana.” Volkswagen’s account covers these selected examples rather than serving as a complete catalogue of its model names.

How to read a car name’s origin

  • Separate meaning from intention. A word may have a literal meaning, while the automaker’s account explains the image or feeling it hoped the name would suggest.
  • Keep the attribution attached. These are the manufacturers’ stated origins. Toyota expressly says some entries in its list are limited to principal origins and are not exhaustive.
  • Do not infer more than the name history says. A model-name explanation does not establish a vehicle’s specifications, market availability, or current status.
