10 Winter Driving Myths, Debunked: What to Do on Snow and Ice

AWD does not help you stop sooner on ice, and black ice can hide on roads that look wet. Debunk ten winter-driving myths and learn when to slow down, prepare, or postpone a trip.

AWD will not help your vehicle stop sooner on ice, a road that looks wet may be black ice, and a short trip still needs winter preparation. These ten myths explain what actually matters when roads turn snowy, icy, or slick—and when postponing the drive is the safest choice.

1. “AWD or 4WD means I can stop faster.”

False. All-wheel drive or four-wheel drive can help a vehicle get moving, but it does not make it stop sooner on a slippery road. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) makes that distinction explicitly, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that slick or snow-covered roads make vehicles harder to control and stop. Your tires, speed, and available traction still determine how much grip you have when braking.

Do not let the ability to accelerate confidently persuade you to drive faster or follow closer. AWD and 4WD are not substitutes for suitable tires or a safe stopping margin. INDOT’s winter driving tips and NHTSA’s winter-weather guidance explain the limits of vehicle traction and drivetrain.

2. “All-season tires are always enough for winter.”

Too broad. Tire choice should reflect the conditions you regularly encounter, your vehicle’s approved fitment, and local requirements. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all wheels for cold, snowy, or icy conditions. It explains that winter tires use softer rubber and a tread design suited to those conditions. NHTSA advises drivers to consider snow tires and review tire safety ratings.

All-season tires

These may suit drivers whose winters are generally mild, but the label alone does not establish that a tire is appropriate for frequent cold, snow, or ice. Check the tire’s safety information and your vehicle’s manual rather than assuming one category fits every climate or car.

Winter tires

For regular driving in cold, snowy, or icy conditions, winter tires are designed for those conditions. Transport Canada recommends fitting them on all wheels, not just the driven axle. Confirm the correct size and fitment for your vehicle, and check the rules where you drive; requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Neither recommendation establishes a universally best tire brand or model. See Transport Canada’s winter-driving guidance and NHTSA’s advice on vehicle preparation and tire ratings.

3. “If the road looks wet, it cannot be icy.”

False. Black ice can look like a wet patch, and sometimes it is difficult to see at all. It can form when water from rain or melting snow refreezes on the road. Bridges and overpasses, shaded sections, and other cold surfaces deserve particular caution because their pavement can freeze while nearby areas appear merely wet.

There is no reliable visual test that makes an apparently wet road safe. If temperatures or recent weather make refreezing possible, reduce speed and leave more room to react. The National Weather Service’s Albany office explains black ice formation and visibility; NCDOT also describes black-ice risks and driving precautions.

4. “Black ice only forms when the air is below freezing.”

False. The air can be above freezing while the road surface remains cold or frozen enough for water to refreeze. That means a relatively mild-feeling day does not rule out ice, especially after rain or snowmelt when the pavement has stayed cold.

Pay attention to the recent sequence of weather, not just the temperature you feel at the moment: water followed by a cold road can create a slick surface. The National Weather Service, Albany office describes black ice forming in above-freezing air when the ground is cold or frozen.

5. “Normal following distance is fine if I drive carefully.”

False. Snowy and icy roads take longer to stop on, so leave more space than you would in ordinary conditions. Transport Canada and Ontario both advise increasing following distance. There is no single safe multiplier for every winter road: the stopping room needed depends on the surface, tires, temperature, vehicle, and speed.

Choose a gap that gives you time to respond if traffic slows or loses traction. If visibility or grip worsens, increase that space further rather than relying on quick braking. See Transport Canada’s winter-driving advice and Ontario’s winter driving guidance.

6. “Cruise control is harmless on snow or ice.”

False on slippery roads. Transport Canada says not to use cruise control in extreme weather; California’s Office of Traffic Safety warns that cruise control can contribute to skidding and loss of tire traction on wet or icy roads; Ontario advises against using it on wet, snowy, or icy pavement because it reduces reaction time and vehicle control.

On a slippery surface, keep direct control of your speed and be ready to respond to changing traction. This is not a claim that cruise control is unsafe in every kind of winter weather; the cited advice concerns extreme or slippery conditions. See Transport Canada, California OTS, and Ontario.

7. “A particular vehicle feature can compensate for abrupt driving.”

False. No traction or driver-assistance feature makes sudden steering, acceleration, or braking a sound winter-driving plan. The UK Highway Code and Ontario guidance emphasize slow speeds and smooth actions to reduce the risk of losing control or skidding.

Slow before a bend rather than braking sharply in it, steer smoothly, and leave room to respond to hazards. NHTSA recommends familiarizing yourself with your vehicle’s braking and driver-assistance systems before winter travel; that familiarity helps you use the systems, not override the need for careful inputs. Consult the Highway Code’s rules for driving in adverse weather, Ontario’s winter-driving advice, and NHTSA’s vehicle-preparation guidance.

8. “Following close behind a snowplow gets me through faster.”

A poor and potentially dangerous assumption. Snowplows can have limited visibility and throw snow, so tailgating leaves little room and can make it harder for the operator to see you. INDOT and the National Weather Service advise drivers to give plows space.

Do not overtake a plow unless the lane intended for your use has been cleared. That instruction comes from the UK Highway Code; it is not a universal statement of every jurisdiction’s passing law, so follow local rules and road instructions where you drive. Read INDOT’s snowplow safety advice, the National Weather Service’s winter-driving guidance, and Highway Code Rules 228–231.

9. “A short trip needs no winter preparation.”

False. A quick drive still exposes you to poor visibility, changing road conditions, and delays. Before setting off, make sure you can see clearly, check the route and forecast, and carry basic winter gear.

Before you leave

  • Clear snow and ice from the windows, mirrors, lights, and other relevant vehicle surfaces. An ice scraper and snow brush are practical tools for this job.
  • Check weather and road conditions, and reconsider the trip if conditions are deteriorating.
  • Consider basic emergency supplies. INDOT lists items such as tire chains among winter travel gear; use chains only when they are compatible with your vehicle and appropriate under the rules for your route.
  • Know how your vehicle’s braking and driver-assistance systems work. NHTSA recommends familiarizing yourself with them before winter driving.

Chain rules and vehicle compatibility vary, so check your owner’s manual and current local requirements rather than assuming chains can be used on every car or road. See INDOT’s winter travel and equipment tips and NHTSA’s vehicle-preparation guidance.

10. “If the weather is bad, I should drive as usual but more carefully.”

Often false: the safer choice may be not to drive. The UK Highway Code says, “DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential” (Rule 228). NCDOT likewise advises avoiding unnecessary travel in black-ice conditions.

Decide whether the trip is essential before setting out. If it can wait, delaying it avoids exposure to conditions you cannot control. If travel is essential, slow down, leave extra space, and expect traction and visibility to change along the route. Check current local guidance because travel advice and road restrictions depend on jurisdiction and conditions. Read Highway Code Rules 228–231 and NCDOT’s winter-weather guidance.
