To reduce the risk of overheating in extreme heat, keep up with vehicle-specific maintenance, check coolant only when the engine is completely cool, monitor warning signs, and stop safely if the temperature rises. Heat can expose an existing cooling-system fault, and no preventive step guarantees your vehicle will not overheat.
1. Follow your vehicle’s maintenance schedule
Cooling-system service intervals vary by vehicle. Follow the schedule in your owner’s manual rather than relying on a generic interval. If you do not know the vehicle’s service history, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends a preventive maintenance checkup before a trip. NHTSA’s summer driving and road-trip tips and AAA’s overview of car overheating causes and solutions both emphasize scheduled maintenance.
2. Check coolant only when the engine is completely cool
Use the owner’s manual to locate the coolant reservoir and follow its checking procedure and markings. Do not remove a radiator or coolant-system cap while the engine is hot or pressurized: escaping coolant can cause severe burns. An NHTSA-hosted vehicle maintenance manual gives the direct warning, “Do not open hot engine cooling system.” Wait until the engine is fully cool before checking anything, and follow the manual’s instructions. Read the NHTSA-hosted vehicle maintenance manual.
3. Use only the coolant specified for your vehicle
Coolant circulates heat away from the engine and transfers it to the radiator. The required formulation can depend on the vehicle’s year, make, model, engine, and country of manufacture. Check the owner’s manual or confirm the exact specification with a qualified service professional; do not choose by color alone or assume a product is universal. If choosing between premixed coolant and concentrate, follow the vehicle and product instructions for compatibility and mixing. AAA explains the vehicle-specific choice in What Coolant Does My Car Need?

4. Investigate low, dirty, or disappearing coolant
A coolant level below the specified range or one that repeatedly drops warrants diagnosis. Topping it off may restore the level temporarily, but it does not identify why coolant is being lost. NHTSA advises service if coolant looks rusty, contains floating particles, or appears sludgy or oily. Do not open the system while hot to inspect or add coolant. See NHTSA’s guidance on coolant and cooling-system checks and AAA’s advice for what to do when a car overheats.
5. Have hoses, belts, and the radiator inspected
Before a long trip—especially in hot weather—ask a qualified technician to check for cooling-system leaks and visible damage, including cracked or bulging hoses, worn or damaged belts, and radiator problems. A visual check can reveal issues worth investigating, but it cannot rule out every cooling-system fault. AAA’s summer travel vehicle-preparation advice covers these checks.

- Ensure fit - to make sure this part fits your exact vehicle, input your make, model and trim level into the garage tool
6. Pay attention to the temperature gauge and other warning signs
Learn how your vehicle’s temperature display works and what its warning indicators mean from the owner’s manual. A rising reading, steam, hissing, unusual sounds, coolant on the ground, or reduced power can signal trouble. Gauge layouts and normal indications differ, so there is no universal dashboard mark that applies to every vehicle. If you see warning signs, treat them as a reason to stop safely and assess the situation rather than pushing on. AAA lists common signs in its overheating guidance and seasonal advice for an overheating car.
7. Account for added load and steep terrain
Hot weather, a full passenger or luggage load, and steep climbs can add strain. Remove unnecessary cargo when practical, and watch the temperature display more closely when driving under these conditions. The cited guidance does not establish a universal safe ambient-temperature limit or load threshold; use your vehicle’s manual and respond to its warnings.

8. Drive patiently in stop-and-go traffic
Heavy traffic can place more stress on the engine than steady highway driving because the engine spends more time idling. Where traffic conditions allow, avoid abrupt acceleration and braking, leave room to move smoothly, and keep an eye on the temperature display. This can reduce avoidable strain, but it cannot correct an underlying cooling-system problem. AAA discusses traffic and overheating in its guide to overheating causes and solutions.

If the temperature begins rising and a safe place to stop is not immediately available, AAA says turning off the air conditioning and briefly turning on the cabin heater may help you reach a safe stopping place. This is a temporary tactic—not a repair, and not a reason to continue a long drive. Pull over as soon as it is safe. AAA’s overheating advice describes this limited use.

10. If the engine overheats, stop safely and get help
- Pull over as soon as it is safe. Do not stop in a place that puts you or other road users at risk.
- Shut off the engine. Do not keep driving in an attempt to reach your destination.
- Stay clear of the hot cooling system. Never remove a cap or add coolant while the engine is hot or pressurized. Wait until it is completely cool and consult the owner’s manual before checking anything.
- Call for assistance. Contact roadside assistance or a qualified repair professional if the vehicle is overheating, leaking coolant, or losing power. Adding coolant alone does not diagnose or fix the cause.
