No used SUV can be guaranteed to last a lifetime, but a 2026 iSeeCars study offers a useful model-level comparison: it estimates each vehicle’s chance of reaching 250,000 miles. The Toyota Sequoia leads this shortlist at 42.3%; the other nine range from 33.1% to 12.3%. These are population estimates, not predictions for the specific SUV you might buy. A well-maintained example with documented history may be a better choice than a higher-ranked model with neglected service or hidden damage.
How to read the longevity numbers
iSeeCars estimates that the average vehicle has a 5.4% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, while the average SUV has a 4.8% chance. The figures below are estimates for model populations from the company’s 2026 analysis—not warranties, guarantees, or odds calculated for an individual used vehicle. The ranking also does not compare particular model years.
iSeeCars describes its separate lifespan analysis as covering more than two million vehicles produced and sold for at least 10 of the prior 20 model years, ranking models by their highest-mileage examples. That high-mileage-exemplar method is different from estimating the probability of reaching 250,000 miles. The estimates here come from the latter comparison.
10 Japanese SUVs with the strongest 250,000-mile estimates
The models are ordered by iSeeCars’ estimated probability of reaching 250,000 miles. Use the figures to narrow a search, then weigh size, capability, operating needs, and the condition of each vehicle you inspect.

The company’s Japanese SUV rankings use broader quality factors, including reliability, longevity, safety, and resale value. They also rank models such as the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5; those rankings are not interchangeable with the specific 250,000-mile probabilities in the table.
How to choose among the ten
Start with the SUV that fits your use
The highest estimate does not automatically make the Sequoia the right purchase. Decide whether you need a full-size vehicle, a midsize SUV, a three-row layout, a compact crossover, or a hybrid. Consider the seating and cargo space you actually use, your driving conditions, and whether towing or off-road capability is important. A smaller or less complex vehicle that fits your routine may make more sense than buying capability you will rarely use.

Compare the specific vehicles, not just the nameplates
Age, mileage, service records, corrosion, accident history, and current mechanical condition can change the value of an individual used SUV. Check the maintenance schedule and known issues for the exact model year, engine, drivetrain, and trim. The figures in the table do not establish that every year or configuration of a model is equally durable.
Budget for the whole ownership decision
Compare fuel economy, expected maintenance and repair needs, and the asking price alongside the longevity estimate. For the Lexus RX Hybrid, Lexus GX, and Acura MDX, consider luxury-model repair and upkeep costs as part of the decision rather than assuming a high longevity estimate means inexpensive ownership. No single figure in the table measures the total cost of keeping a used SUV on the road.

Put the 250,000-mile figure in context
iSeeCars separately reports an average lifespan estimate of 184,014 miles, or about 14.4 years, for the Toyota Highlander, along with a 39.5% estimated chance of reaching 200,000 miles. These are distinct measures from the Highlander’s 12.3% estimate for reaching 250,000 miles in the table. A different mileage threshold—and a separate lifespan estimate—should not be treated as the same probability.
A separate iSeeCars owner-retention analysis found the Toyota Highlander, Honda CR-V, Honda Pilot, Subaru Forester, Toyota 4Runner, and Toyota Sequoia among models owners were comparatively likely to keep for at least 15 years. It analyzed more than 660,000 vehicles from 1981–2005 model years sold in 2020, so it is historical context, not a measure of today’s used inventory or proof of mechanical reliability. Check a used SUV before you buy
- Check recalls by VIN. Enter the vehicle identification number in the NHTSA recall lookup to see whether the specific SUV has an open recall.
- Verify the mileage and history. Compare the odometer with maintenance and inspection records. If the seller does not provide a vehicle history report, NHTSA advises obtaining one. A report is useful context, not a substitute for an inspection.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the mechanic to inspect underneath the vehicle, road-test it, and check for diagnostic trouble codes with a scan tool. NHTSA’s vehicle inspection checklist includes these checks.
- Look for condition problems. Have the vehicle assessed for corrosion, accident damage, warning lights, and signs that scheduled maintenance was missed. A clean reputation for a model cannot rule out problems with one example.
- Compare the final candidates. Consider records, condition, age and mileage, fuel economy, size, capability, and likely repair costs together. Choose the individual SUV that best fits your needs and budget, rather than relying on its model’s position in a longevity table.
