For this guide, “on the cheap” means buying used in Germany—not that any of these SUVs is cheap to maintain. AUTO BILD’s June 2026 guide puts the BMW X5 F15 at about €23,000 and the Volkswagen Touareg 7P at about €15,000 for examples with up to 200,000 km; those are indicative starting points from that guide, not guaranteed transaction prices. The other six-figure? No: the remaining models belong on a shortlist, but the sources here do not establish comparable current prices for them. Match size and budget first, then judge each individual vehicle by its engine, condition, service history and inspection results.

The ten choices below are an editorial shortlist, not a universal ranking. Compact models such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Porsche Macan are not direct substitutes for larger SUVs such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Used prices vary with year, engine, mileage, equipment, condition and maintenance history. A low asking price alone does not show which one will cost least to own.

Compact German luxury SUVs

1. Audi Q5

The Q5 is a compact option for buyers who want premium-SUV utility without moving up to a Q7-sized vehicle. In iSeeCars’ 2026 German luxury small-SUV category, it scored 8.1/10. That is the publisher’s quality score, not a head-to-head road test or a guarantee about a particular used car. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-report summary notes that the Q5 ranks among the better SUVs in nearly all age classes; that general result cannot replace an inspection of the vehicle you are considering. AUTO BILD’s TÜV summary provides the inspection context.

Generation matters: ADAC says the second-generation Q5 arrived in 2017. Check the exact model year, engine and VIN when reviewing records, recalls and parts fitment. ADAC’s Q5 overview covers the model chronology.

2. BMW X3

The X3 is another compact choice, and iSeeCars gave it 8.1/10 in its 2026 German luxury small-SUV category. Its score ties the Q5’s in that publisher’s system; it does not establish that the two drive alike or will have the same repair costs. AUTO BILD’s cited TÜV-report summary lists a 25.9% significant-defect rate for the 12-to-13-year-old BMW X3/X4 cohort. That is a rate for an age group in German inspections, not a prediction for a specific X3.

3. Mercedes-Benz GLC

The GLC scored 8.5/10 in iSeeCars’ 2026 German luxury small-SUV category, the highest score among the listed models. Use that as one comparison point, not a reliability promise. Compare its local asking price and service record with similarly aged Q5 and X3 examples; the sources do not establish a directly comparable current German price for the GLC.

4. Porsche Macan

The Macan scored 7.8/10 in the same iSeeCars category. It belongs on a shortlist where compact dimensions and a performance-oriented luxury identity matter, but that score is not a performance ranking. The available sources do not provide comparable acceleration figures or current German price bands for the ten models. Check the precise engine, equipment and condition rather than assuming every Macan offers the same driving experience or ownership exposure.

Larger German SUVs

5. Audi Q7

The Q7 is the larger Audi alternative for buyers who need more space than a Q5 provides. It should be compared with other large SUVs—not with compact crossovers—because size, equipment and running costs differ. The sources do not establish a current Q7 price or a comparable ownership-cost estimate, so use local listings and a vehicle-specific inspection to assess whether an example fits your budget.

6. BMW X5

The BMW X5 F15 (2013–2018) is one of the few models here with a German guide price and power range: AUTO BILD’s June 2026 overview lists 218–575 PS and used examples starting at about €23,000 at mileage up to 200,000 km. These are guide figures for that market snapshot, not a promise of a particular car’s price or condition. AUTO BILD says the 3.0-liter diesel six-cylinder was a popular version and reports crankshaft-bearing damage occurring more often after 150,000 km on the N57D30. Treat that as a reason to check engine identity, service records and inspection findings carefully—not as proof that every N57 will fail.

ADAC lists the X5 F15/F85 generation as 2013–2018 and the G05/F95 as 2018–2023. Confirm generation and engine from the VIN and documentation before applying advice about a specific version. ADAC’s X5 overview gives the generation chronology. AUTO BILD’s TÜV-report summary records a 23.2% significant-defect rate for the 12-to-13-year-old BMW X5/X6 cohort; it is an age-band inspection statistic, not an individual-car verdict.

7. Mercedes-Benz GLE

The GLE is the larger Mercedes option on this list. AUTO BILD’s cited TÜV-report summary groups the GLE with the older ML and lists a 19.3% significant-defect rate for the 12-to-13-year-old cohort. The grouped statistic concerns vehicles in that age band, not every GLE generation. Verify the exact model and year, and do not treat an inspection-rate comparison as a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection.

8. Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne is the larger Porsche choice for shoppers who want a luxury SUV with performance appeal. The available evidence identifies it as a candidate, but does not supply a comparable German starting price, a verified performance ranking against the other nine, or a total-cost estimate. Compare vehicles of similar age and mileage and account for the exact engine, equipment, maintenance documentation and inspection results before deciding whether a low purchase price is genuinely affordable.

9. Volkswagen Touareg

The Touareg 7P (2010–2018) is the clearest lower-entry-price large SUV in AUTO BILD’s June 2026 German guide: it lists 204–380 PS and examples from about €15,000 at mileage up to 200,000 km. These are indicative guide figures, not guaranteed current asking or sale prices. The same guide flags injector problems on V6 diesels through 2014 and failures in the high-pressure fuel-pump system. Starting trouble and uneven running may be signs of common-rail fuel-system issues; frequent towing may add wear. Ask about the vehicle’s use and have any symptoms investigated rather than assuming the fault is present.

AUTO BILD’s TÜV-report summary lists a 17.9% significant-defect rate for the 12-to-13-year-old Touareg cohort. It is a German inspection statistic for an age group, not a claim that a particular Touareg is sound or defective.

How to compare the ten without mistaking price for value

First narrow the field by size: compare Q5, X3, GLC and Macan with one another, and Q7, X5, GLE, Cayenne and Touareg with one another. Then compare actual listings with the same practical criteria:

  • Purchase cost: Use prices in your local market and include taxes and fees. The two euro starting points above come from one German guide and cannot be directly compared with US-dollar rankings or treated as live listing quotes.
  • Exact vehicle identity: Record model year, generation, engine and VIN. Advice for one generation or engine should not be generalized to another.
  • History and condition: Request maintenance records, investigate how the SUV was used, review relevant inspection results and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
  • Ownership exposure: Consider the likely costs of tires, brakes, fuel and repairs for the specific vehicle. The cited sources do not quantify total ownership costs across all ten, so a low asking price cannot settle this comparison.
  • Evidence in context: Keep rankings, age-cohort inspection statistics and model-specific fault reports separate. They measure different things and none guarantees an individual vehicle’s reliability.

iSeeCars says its used rankings combine data from more than 12 million new and used vehicles in its longevity and five-year depreciation studies with NHTSA safety ratings. Its resulting scores are useful as one publisher’s cross-model comparison, not a universal reliability guarantee. TÜV rates reflect German inspections of particular age cohorts, while the reported BMW and Volkswagen issues concern specific engines or versions.
