These 10 used SUVs are worth putting on an off-road shopping shortlist, but none is a guaranteed bargain: local prices, condition, model year, trim, and drivetrain vary. For steep, rocky, or rutted trails, confirm that the exact vehicle has 4WD with low range—and verify any locking differential—rather than relying on its badge. For snow, maintained dirt roads, and lighter trails, an AWD crossover may be a more comfortable fit.
How to choose a used SUV for the trails you drive
Start with the terrain, then check the individual vehicle. On steep or uneven routes, low-range gearing can help the driver control speed and apply power; a rear locker can help when a wheel loses traction. Neither feature should be assumed from a model name or trim badge alone. For lighter use, prioritize the mix of traction, clearance, tires, road comfort, and cargo space that suits your trips.
Compare ground clearance, approach and departure angles, underbody protection, and tire condition along with the drivetrain. All-terrain tires may suit some mixed-use driving, but check the correct size and fitment for the specific SUV. A used off-road SUV buying guide also identifies AWD or 4WD, clearance, angles, tires, and underbody protection as factors to weigh: Edmunds’ off-road SUV buying guide.

1. Jeep Wrangler
A natural candidate if trail capability matters more than a car-like daily drive. Choose a specific year and drivetrain deliberately, and inspect condition closely. The available evidence does not establish current prices or support ranking particular Wrangler years here.
2. Toyota 4Runner
Look for a specific 4WD vehicle with low range if your trails call for it. Toyota says 2026 4WD 4Runner variants have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high and low range; an electronic locking rear differential is standard on specified TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades. Those are 2026 specifications, not a guide to older used examples, so confirm year and trim against the individual vehicle. Toyota 4Runner newsroom specifications.
3. Nissan Xterra
The Xterra was produced from 2000 through the 2015 model year. A 2012 PRO-4X press kit lists a low-range transfer case and electronic locking rear differential; automatic-equipped PRO-4X models also had Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist. Confirm equipment on the exact year and vehicle rather than generalizing across the lineup. For that 2012 PRO-4X, Nissan lists a transfer-case low ratio of 2.625:1. 4. Jeep Grand Cherokee
A 2017 Grand Cherokee equipped with Quadra-Trac II is identified in a used-SUV guide as an option for steep, rutted trails where low range matters. That transfer case is configuration-specific; check the equipment on the vehicle you are considering rather than assuming every Grand Cherokee has it. Edmunds’ used 4×4 SUV guide.
5. Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero
This is a used 4WD candidate to investigate in your local market. Verify the specific vehicle’s transfer case, condition, and local parts and service availability; capability and prices were not established here by year and configuration.
6. Suzuki Grand Vitara
Potential value depends on generation and equipment. Check that the exact vehicle has the drivetrain and low-range features required for your trails. Do not infer those features—or a favorable current price—from the model name alone.

- COMPREHENSIVE RECOVERY KIT: This all-inclusive off-road recovery kit is designed to equip you with everything you need for any off-road situation. The kit includes two Recovery Tow Straps, two D-Ring Shackles, a Block Pulley, a pair of durable Gloves, and a convenient Recovery Gear Storage Bag. Each component has been carefully selected to ensure you have the right tools at your disposal when faced with challenging terrains or tough recovery scenarios.
- HEAVY-DUTY RECOVERY TOW STRAP: This kit includes two Recovery Tow Straps, each designed to serve different purposes while offering maximum durability and strength. The 30 ft strap has an impressive breaking strength of 22,000 lbs, while the 10 ft strap holds up to 18,000 lbs. Both straps are crafted from 100% high-grade nylon, which not only provides exceptional elasticity to absorb shock loads but also ensures superior tensile strength. What sets these straps apart is their anti-dirt and wear-resistant properties, making them reliable in even the harshest environments.
- EXCELLENT USABILITY: The convenience and durability of this off-road kit are evident in the thoughtful design of the Recovery Gear Storage Bag and the gloves included in the set. The storage bag is compact yet spacious enough to keep all your recovery gear organized and easily accessible. The gloves are another standout feature, offering both comfort and protection. They are made with waterproof materials, featuring a durable silicone grip on the palms to ensure a firm hold on tools and equipment, even in wet or muddy conditions.
- MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY: Thanks to its D-Ring Shackles and Block Pulley, these components are engineered to maximize your pulling power, making it possible to double your winch capacity or redirect the pulling force to a safer angle. The D-Ring Shackles are made from ultra-strong materials that ensure secure connections under heavy loads. The Block Pulley, on the other hand, is designed to minimize friction and wear on your straps, prolonging their lifespan.
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: In the unpredictable world of off-roading, choosing X-BULL is an error-free choice. This off-road recovery kit offers a complete solution to ensure you are never left stranded or unprepared. With high-quality components that cover every aspect of recovery—from towing and stabilization to storage and protection—this kit is your best defense against the unexpected.
7. Subaru Forester
Consider a Forester for snow, forest roads, and lighter trails rather than treating it as interchangeable with a low-range 4WD rig on difficult obstacles. A cited 2019 Forester Premium example is AWD and has 8.7 inches of published ground clearance, X-MODE, and hill-descent control. Those specifications describe that example, not every Forester, and clearance by itself does not establish suitability for a trail. Edmunds’ 2019 Forester Premium specifications.
8. Toyota FJ Cruiser
Used FJ Cruiser trims are another off-road candidate identified in a budget-off-roader roundup. Check local asking prices and the condition and equipment of the individual vehicle; the available information does not establish that an FJ Cruiser is currently a bargain. MotorTrend’s affordable used off-road vehicles roundup.
9. Jeep Cherokee
The name covers different years and configurations. Before considering one for difficult terrain, distinguish versions with conventional 4WD and low range from lighter-duty configurations; the available information does not validate a particular year-and-trim recommendation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build the real purchase budget
Do not use the full budget on the asking price. A used-SUV buying guide recommends pricing tires, overdue service, and necessary repairs before committing. Compare vehicles by total purchase-plus-repair cost, mileage, condition, and verified equipment—not just the listed price. Edmunds’ used SUV guide.
Pre-purchase checks
- Review service records and identify overdue maintenance.
- Check tire age, wear, and suitability for the intended use.
- Inspect for corrosion and visible underbody damage.
- Test drivetrain operation, including low range and any fitted locker.
- Consider an independent pre-purchase inspection; it can identify concerns, but cannot guarantee future reliability.
Model-specific figures: keep the year and trim attached
The following are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparisons between these SUVs. They apply only to the stated Xterra model year or configuration.

Why there is no universal “cheapest” pick
Used prices depend on location, mileage, condition, model year, and trim, and comparable current price evidence is not available for all ten candidates. A lower asking price can be offset by worn tires, overdue service, or needed repairs. Compare current local examples on the equipment you need and the money required to make each one trail-ready.
