VehicleReliability.com’s year-by-year comparison puts the 2016, 2017 and 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid at the top of their respective same-year midsize-car rankings, each at No. 1. Those positions are useful for narrowing a used-car search, not a promise that every car from those years is dependable: mileage, trim, maintenance, condition and open recalls matter for the individual vehicle.
How to read this Camry Hybrid reliability ranking
VehicleReliability.com compares Camry Hybrid model years using NHTSA failure reports weighted by U.S. sales, then ranks each year against midsize passenger cars from the same model year. The denominator therefore changes by year, and the ranking is relative to that year’s class—not a lifetime failure probability or a direct comparison of one Camry Hybrid year against another. The site’s page spans 2006–2025 but scores 17 model years, not every year in that range. See VehicleReliability.com’s methodology and table.
Here are the ten highest placements shown in that dataset, ordered by class rank. When two years share a rank, they are listed in model-year order.
| Model year | Same-year midsize-car rank | What the rank means |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | #1 of 47 | Top-ranked in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2017 | #1 of 50 | Top-ranked in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2021 | #1 of 33 | Top-ranked in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2013 | #2 of 50 | Second in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2014 | #2 of 48 | Second in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2015 | #3 of 50 | Third in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2019 | #3 of 47 | Third in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2020 | #3 of 38 | Third in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2012 | #6 of 43 | Sixth in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
| 2010 | #7 of 46 | Seventh in the source’s comparison for its model year. |
All ranks and denominators in the table are from VehicleReliability.com’s undated page accessed in 2026; the site reports its class comparisons, not a probability that a particular car will avoid repairs. Source and full year table.

What is the best year for a used Toyota Camry Hybrid?
2016, 2017 and 2021: the strongest displayed class placements
VehicleReliability.com places the 2016 Camry Hybrid at #1 of 47 same-year midsize passenger cars, the 2017 at #1 of 50, and the 2021 at #1 of 33. These are the strongest placements in the listed years. The different denominators matter: each rank is calculated within a separate model-year comparison, so the source does not establish that one of these three is more reliable than the other two.
Other strong candidates
The 2013 and 2014 rank second in their respective comparisons, while the 2015, 2019 and 2020 rank third. The 2012 and 2010 also appear in the ten-year shortlist at sixth and seventh, respectively. Treat these as a way to prioritize vehicles to inspect—not as a substitute for evaluating the particular car.

Which Toyota Camry Hybrid years should you avoid?
Why 2007 is a caution in one ranking
VehicleReliability.com marks the 2007 Camry Hybrid #56 of 56 same-year midsize passenger cars, its weakest model-year placement in the table. That is a poor relative rank in this dataset; it does not prove that every 2007 example is unreliable or that every later year is trouble-free. VehicleReliability.com’s year comparison.
Why another source flags 2015
CarComplaints.com identifies 2007 as the Camry Hybrid year with the most total complaints and excessive oil consumption as its most-reported problem, but its own worst-year assessment is 2015. Its assessment considers factors beyond raw complaint volume, including repair cost or reports occurring at lower mileage. This is a different signal and method from VehicleReliability.com’s sales-weighted NHTSA comparison; neither should be treated as a controlled reliability survey. The difference is a reason to inspect the vehicle and its history carefully rather than treating a single site’s “worst year” label as a universal verdict.
How to compare specific used Camry Hybrids
Use these four checks together. The available sources do not support combining them into one universal reliability score.
Rank #4

- Improved Illumination: The integrated metalized reflectors of this headlight assembly increase light distance for better visibility & driving safety in any dusky conditions

- Direct replacement: professional Installation would be highly recommended; come as a pair, including Driver (Left) & Passenger (Right) side
- Use the year rank with its denominator. A #1 placement is relative to the same-year midsize-car field, not a failure-free guarantee.
- Read complaint signals in context. Distinguish total reports from a site’s worst-year assessment, and note which source and method produced each conclusion.
- Assess the individual car. Compare mileage, condition, trim and service history; the model-line ranking cannot tell you how a particular vehicle was maintained.
- Check recalls by VIN. Look up the specific vehicle and confirm whether any required remedy is complete. Use the NHTSA recall lookup or Toyota’s recall lookup rather than assuming a year-wide status.
Check the 2025–2026 display-meter recall by VIN
On August 11, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Toyota recalled about 655,000 Camrys globally over a display error. More than 508,000 U.S. model-year 2025–2026 Camry Hybrids were reported affected. A 7-inch combination meter may remain blank at startup, potentially disabling turn signals, hazard lights and some warnings. The reported remedy is a no-charge dealer software update. These figures describe the reported recall scope; they do not establish that every vehicle in those model years is affected or that a particular one has been repaired. Check the VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup and verify any remedy with the seller or dealer. Associated Press report, August 11, 2026.
