If your car won’t start, first note what happens when you try: no sound, clicking, slow cranking, or normal cranking without the engine firing. Those clues can narrow the possibilities, but they do not identify a failed part on their own. Start with safe, simple checks; use your owner’s manual for any vehicle-specific procedure; and call for roadside or professional help if the location or car is unsafe.
Start by identifying the symptom
Before trying anything else, make one brief start attempt and observe the result. A no-start can involve the battery, battery connections, starter, key or ignition system, fuel delivery, charging system, fuses, or another electrical or mechanical fault. A sound or dashboard light is a clue, not a diagnosis. AAA outlines several possible causes and symptom patterns in its guide to why a car won’t start.

10 safe checks to try
1. Make sure the scene is safe
If you are near moving traffic, in poor visibility, or in a place where opening the hood would be unsafe, stay clear of the vehicle and call for roadside help. AAA advises against attempting a jump when there is not enough room to work safely away from traffic in its jumper-cable guidance.
2. Secure the vehicle
Before any permitted start procedure, set the parking brake and confirm the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Follow the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle; do not bypass safety interlocks.

3. Read the dashboard and listen
Note any warning messages, whether the interior lights seem dim, and whether the engine is silent, clicks, cranks slowly, or cranks at its usual speed. These observations help describe the problem to roadside assistance or a technician, but they cannot confirm which part has failed.
4. Check basic operating conditions
Confirm there is fuel and that the selector is in Park or Neutral. If the car reports that the key is not detected, check the manual for its model-specific emergency fob procedure. On some vehicles, the manual may instruct you to hold the remote near the start button. Do not guess or force the procedure.
5. Look at the battery only if it is safe
A visibly loose or corroded connection can interfere with starting, but do not handle a swollen, cracked, leaking, frozen, or strongly sulfur-smelling battery. Arrange professional assistance instead. AAA’s battery maintenance guidance covers battery and connection hazards.

6. Treat a jump-start as a conditional test
A jump may help when a weak 12-volt battery is the issue, but it will not fix a failed starter, fuel-delivery problem, or defective charging system. Consult the owner’s manual first: some vehicles require special steps or designated connection points, and an incorrect procedure can damage electronics. Do not jump a frozen or visibly damaged battery.

If your manual permits a jump, use a suitable portable jump starter or compatible jumper cables and follow the manual’s exact sequence. Wear eye protection and keep cables clear of moving parts. Battery acid, explosive gas, electrical current, metal jewelry, belts, fans, and traffic are hazards. AAA explains equipment and precautions in its jumper-cable guide. A portable unit should be compatible with the vehicle’s 12-volt system and have suitable cranking capacity and protective features; do not rely on a universal amp threshold.
7. Follow the right procedure for an EV or hybrid
An EV or hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery cannot be jump-started. Some models allow a jump to the 12-volt system, but the manual specifies whether that is permitted and where to connect. NHTSA distinguishes the high-voltage battery from the 12-volt system in its electric and hybrid vehicle safety guidance. High-voltage service should be handled by a qualified technician with EV-specific training.

8. Check the result after a permitted jump
If the car still will not crank, stop repeated attempts: the problem may be a starter, connection, fuse, or another electrical fault that a jump will not resolve. If it starts but soon stalls or will not restart, have the battery and charging system checked rather than assuming the jump repaired the cause.
9. Use tools only if you know how
A suitable jump starter or jumper cables can assist with a permitted weak-battery jump. A multimeter can screen battery voltage, but one reading is not a complete diagnosis. Avoid removing parts, probing unfamiliar circuits, or using tools in an unsafe location.

Call roadside assistance or a repair professional if the location is unsafe, the battery is damaged, warning messages or unusual odors are present, a permitted jump does not work, or the engine cranks normally without starting. These situations need more than repeated attempts at the roadside.

What a jump-start can—and cannot—tell you
If a safe, manual-approved jump gets the engine running, that is useful information, but it does not establish that the battery was the only problem. A battery that will not retain charge or a charging-system fault may leave you stranded again. If a jump does not change the symptom, or the engine starts and then stalls, arrange testing rather than continuing to jump or crank it.
Jumper cables require a compatible donor vehicle; a portable jump starter avoids that requirement but still needs to match the vehicle and be used as its manufacturer and your vehicle manual direct. Neither option is a repair for faults outside the battery. AAA’s equipment guidance discusses capacity and protective features to consider.
What to tell roadside assistance or the repair shop
Share the exact symptom and sequence rather than naming a part you suspect. Useful details include whether the dashboard lights came on, whether you heard a click or slow cranking, any warning message or key-detection alert, whether a jump was attempted according to the manual, and whether the car started, stalled, or failed to restart. This gives the technician a clearer starting point without treating a symptom as a diagnosis.
