Riding two-up safely starts before the motorcycle moves: make sure it is equipped and rated for a passenger, set it up according to its owner’s manual, brief your passenger, and practice before entering traffic. The added weight and a passenger’s movement change how the bike starts, brakes, corners, and responds to wind, so leave more margin and use smooth controls.
1. Make sure the motorcycle is built for two
Confirm that the motorcycle has a passenger seat or seating area and passenger footrests, and check the owner’s manual for its load limit and any passenger-specific restrictions. The passenger must be able to reach the footrests. Do not carry someone on a bike or setup that is not designed and equipped for a passenger. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) explains passenger requirements and preparation.
2. Set up the bike for the added load
Read the manual for your specific model before adjusting suspension or tire pressure. A passenger can change the suspension setup the bike needs; tire pressure may also need to reflect the added load. MSF’s T-CLOCS pre-ride checklist says to check tire pressure when the tires are cold and adjust it to the load. Use the manufacturer’s specifications rather than a universal two-up pressure or preload setting.
3. Gear the passenger properly
Your passenger needs protective equipment, not just a helmet. MSF’s general riding guidance recommends a quality, properly fitted helmet and eye protection, sturdy protective clothing, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots. 4. Brief your passenger before starting
Explain the basics while the motorcycle is parked. MSF’s Motorcycle Operator Manual puts it plainly: “Passenger safety begins with proper instruction.” Agree on how the passenger will hold on and how you will signal that it is safe to get on or off.
- Keep both feet on the passenger footrests while the motorcycle is moving, and keep legs clear of hot or moving parts.
- Stay behind the rider and hold on as agreed.
- Move with the motorcycle through turns rather than leaning or shifting independently.
- Avoid sudden movements, turns, or attempts to get off until the rider says the bike is secure.
5. Practice in a low-risk place
Do not make traffic your first test of how the motorcycle handles two-up. MSF recommends practicing passenger riding in a low-risk area. Before riding in traffic, work on low-speed clutch and throttle control and normal and emergency braking with the passenger aboard. If the bike or either person feels difficult to control, stop and address the issue before continuing.

6. Start and stop smoothly
The extra weight can make a start require more throttle and careful clutch control, while braking may feel different. Give yourself time and space to slow down; avoid abrupt throttle, clutch, and brake inputs. Practice these responses before riding where a sudden stop or tight maneuver is likely.
7. Give corners extra margin
A passenger affects the motorcycle’s balance and can reduce cornering clearance. Approach turns conservatively, keep your inputs smooth, and avoid carrying a speed that leaves no room to adjust. Build confidence gradually rather than assuming the motorcycle will corner just as it does solo.

8. Allow more time and space to pass
With a passenger aboard, passing takes more time and space. Wait for a clear, suitable opportunity instead of relying on the acceleration or maneuvering room you expect when riding alone. Side winds can also have a more pronounced effect with the added load, so account for changing conditions and preserve room to respond.
9. Keep the passenger involved in safe riding
Before setting off, confirm that the passenger understands the agreed hold, foot placement, and movement through turns. Ask them to look in the direction of turns and move with the motorcycle, while avoiding sudden shifts. The rider remains responsible for choosing a pace and route that leave enough room for the passenger and the bike to respond.

10. Mount and dismount deliberately
Keep the motorcycle secured and braced before the passenger gets on. Tell them when to mount, and make sure you can keep the bike stable throughout the process. Have the passenger dismount first, then secure the motorcycle before you get off. Follow the motorcycle’s manual and use a sequence that you can manage safely with that model and load.

Passenger laws and equipment requirements vary by state. Requirements may address passenger footrests, whether the passenger can reach them, or a separate seating area. Check the rules for every jurisdiction on your route rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. For a child passenger, MSF advises checking state law and considering whether the child is mature enough for the responsibility, tall enough to reach the footrests, properly equipped, and able to hold on. There is no universal minimum age established here; follow the applicable local law.
