The Yamaha YZF-R9 is no longer upcoming: Yamaha announced the production motorcycle on October 9, 2024. That changes the original wish-list question into a more useful one: which anticipated features made it onto the bike, and what would still improve a future version? Here are 10 answers, separating Yamaha’s published equipment from ideas that remain wishlist items.
What the original wish list gets right
Yamaha presents the R9 as a Supersport motorcycle combining track-capable performance with street accessibility. Its production specification already covers much of what riders might reasonably have hoped for: a CP3 triple, dedicated chassis, adjustable suspension, premium front brakes, aerodynamic winglets and a broad electronics suite. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent road-test conclusions. Yamaha reported the model’s WorldSSP debut at Phillip Island in February 2025. 10 things riders wanted to see—and what Yamaha delivered
1. A proven three-cylinder engine
The production R9 uses Yamaha’s 890cc liquid-cooled CP3 three-cylinder engine. That satisfies the central expectation of an R-series bike with the character of Yamaha’s triple platform. Yamaha’s published materials identify the engine and displacement; the sources cited here do not establish independent power or acceleration comparisons.
2. A chassis designed for the job
Rather than simply relying on the engine to define the motorcycle, Yamaha specifies a dedicated aluminum Supersport chassis. That is the kind of purpose-built foundation a track-oriented model needs. How it feels on the road or circuit requires independent riding evaluation, which Yamaha’s product description alone cannot provide.

3. Adjustable suspension
The R9 comes with adjustable KYB suspension. Adjustability gives owners and technicians scope to tune the setup to rider, road and track conditions; it does not, by itself, tell buyers how broad the adjustment range is or how the bike behaves at the limit.
4. Strong front braking hardware
Yamaha lists Brembo Stylema front calipers and a radial master cylinder. These are existing production features, not upgrades still waiting to appear. For any buyer comparing motorcycles, the hardware list is a useful starting point, but braking performance depends on the whole system and riding conditions.

5. Functional aerodynamic winglets
Front winglets are part of the R9’s design, and Yamaha describes them as functional. Their inclusion answers the wish for visible aerodynamic equipment, but the available official material does not quantify a downforce benefit or establish how it compares with other motorcycles.
6. A complete, lean-sensitive rider-aid package
The U.S. feature list includes a six-axis IMU-based electronics package with power delivery modes, lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, lift control and brake control with ABS. It also lists engine-brake management, back-slip regulation and launch control. The practical wish is not merely to have electronic aids, but to have a range of settings that riders can tailor to conditions and experience.

7. Track-minded controls that still work on the street
Yamaha lists a third-generation quickshifter, Yamaha Ride Control and a variable speed limiter. These features extend the R9’s electronics beyond basic intervention systems. The limiter and available control settings are especially relevant to a motorcycle Yamaha positions for both track-capable performance and street use.
8. A useful dashboard and phone connection
The U.S. model has a five-inch TFT display with Y-Connect smartphone connectivity. That meets the expectation of a modern cockpit rather than a bare-bones supersport instrument panel. Yamaha’s feature page describes the equipment, but the cited material does not establish every function’s availability or compatibility across phones and markets.

9. Street usability beyond the racetrack
Cruise control appears on Yamaha’s U.S. feature list—an unusual but meaningful addition to a supersport wish list. It supports the street-accessibility side of Yamaha’s stated intent. Buyers should still consider the full riding position and comfort in person; a feature list cannot settle whether the ergonomics suit a particular rider.
10. A future update that improves fit and ownership, not just lap-time claims
The production bike already covers the headline hardware requests. A genuinely useful future iteration could focus on the ownership details that matter day to day: rider fit, clear market-specific specifications, and transparent pricing and availability. Those are wishlist priorities, not features Yamaha has announced. The official U.S. 2025 specification gives a 32.7-inch seat height and 430-pound wet weight, along with a 3.7-gallon fuel capacity and estimated 48 mpg. What changes by year and market
Specifications and updates are not automatically universal. Yamaha has a U.S. page for the 2026 R9, while its September 15, 2026 announcement describes a Japan-market 2027 YZF-R9 ABS minor change associated with a manufacturing-process change and new color options. That Japan update does not establish U.S. equipment or availability. Check the specifications for the exact market and model year before treating a feature as standard on a particular bike.
