The 2016 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim makes its case with pared-back bobber styling, an intentionally low solo seat and a Twin Cam 103B powertrain. Here are ten factory-backed details that define the standard FLS. These are design and specification highlights—not claims from a road test—and they should not be confused with the separate Softail Slim S or the redesigned 2018 generation.
What stands out about the 2016 Softail Slim?
1. A restrained, 1940s-inspired bobber look
Harley-Davidson describes the standard Slim as a minimalistic take on 1940s bobber styling. Its combination of a solo seat, simple lines and steel-laced wheels gives the bike a distinctive period-inspired silhouette without relying on elaborate bodywork. The company’s archived 2016 U.S. model page calls it a balance of Harley-Davidson past and present; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
2. Blacked-out finishes that reinforce the look
Black finishes on the engine and other details give the Slim a darker, more pared-back appearance. This treatment works alongside the retro styling rather than making the bike look like a reproduction of a specific vintage model.
3. A low solo seat
The factory specification sheet lists a low-slung solo seat measuring 23.8 inches. That number is the seat figure in the specification sheet’s stated context; Harley-Davidson’s archived model page also presents seat-height figures in a separate specification section, so the figures should not be blended or treated as interchangeable without their measurement context. The low solo setup is a defining part of the Slim’s profile, but seat height alone does not establish comfort or fit for every rider.

4. Hollywood handlebars
The Hollywood handlebars are a recognizable styling feature and help shape the bike’s traditional cruiser appearance. Riders considering a different reach should check the fit of any replacement or accessory against the exact model year and its controls and lines.
5. Retro half-moon footboards
Half-moon footboards continue the old-school theme and provide a broad foot support surface. Their shape is part of the standard model’s factory design, rather than a feature unique to the Slim S.

6. Black steel-laced wheels
The black steel-laced wheels add visual texture while fitting the bike’s stripped-back styling. They are one of the clearest details separating the Slim’s look from a conventional cast-wheel cruiser.
7. A narrow-profile rear tire
Harley-Davidson’s 2016 specification sheet identifies a 144 mm narrow-profile rear tire. The measurement describes the factory specification; it is not evidence of a handling advantage or a substitute for checking the tire currently fitted to a used motorcycle.

8. The standard model’s Twin Cam 103B
The 2016 standard Softail Slim (FLS) uses an air-cooled High Output Twin Cam 103B. Harley-Davidson’s archived U.S. specifications list 103.1 cubic inches (1,690 cc) of displacement and 100.3 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. These are manufacturer figures for the 2016 U.S. standard model, not independent test results.
9. A six-speed Cruise Drive transmission
The 2016 standard FLS pairs its engine with a six-speed Cruise Drive transmission. The same U.S. archive lists a 5-gallon (18.9-liter) fuel capacity and 677-pound (307-kilogram) dry weight. Those figures apply to that archived market and model year; equipment and specifications can differ by region.

10. A factory-listed way to bring the bars closer
Harley-Davidson lists a Softail Slim pull-back riser kit for riders seeking a shorter reach or a more upright position. Its current APAC listing describes 4.5-inch risers compatible with stock control cables and brake lines. That listing does not establish fitment for every Softail Slim year or market. Before buying, confirm the kit’s application for the motorcycle’s model year and verify handlebar, control-cable and brake-line compatibility. See the Softail Slim pull-back riser kit listing.

The 2016 Slim S is a separate model
The Softail Slim S was a distinct S-series model, not simply another name for the standard FLS. Harley-Davidson’s archive associates the S variant with a Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110. Do not attribute that engine to the standard 2016 Slim, whose listed engine is the Twin Cam 103B. Compare exact model year, trim, market, engine and equipment when looking at listings or parts.

The 2018 redesign begins a different generation
Harley-Davidson’s 2018 Softail redesign brought a new frame, suspension and Milwaukee-Eight powertrain to the Softail Slim and other models in the lineup, according to contemporary platform coverage. Those changes belong to the redesigned generation, not the 2016 Twin Cam model described here. When comparing used bikes across those years, treat engine family, chassis and suspension as generation-specific rather than carrying 2016 specifications forward.
Quick Recap
What to check when shopping for one
- Confirm the exact variant. Check whether the motorcycle is a standard Slim or Slim S, and verify the model year rather than relying on a listing title.
- Match specifications to market and year. The displacement, torque, fuel capacity and dry-weight figures above are for the archived 2016 U.S. standard model.
- Inspect actual equipment. A used bike may have different bars, wheels, tires or other parts than its factory configuration.
- Verify accessory application. For risers or other fit-related parts, confirm year-specific fitment and compatibility with the motorcycle’s controls, cables and brake lines before purchase.
