Before buying a Toyota Highlander, compare the exact vehicle’s powertrain, seating, towing rating, warranty and total cost—not just its model name or reputation. For a used Highlander, verify its VIN and records, check for open recalls, and arrange an independent inspection. Toyota’s current U.S. model information below is for the 2026 Highlander; used-car features and coverage depend on the vehicle’s year and history.
1. Decide whether gas or hybrid fits your driving and budget
Toyota offers gas and hybrid Highlanders in the U.S. for model year 2026. Toyota estimates 24 mpg combined for the gas models and 35 mpg combined for the hybrids. These are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of what an individual driver will achieve. The 2026 brochure lists gas trims at 21 city/28 highway/24 combined mpg; Hybrid XLE at 35/35/35; and Hybrid Limited and Platinum at 35/34/35. Estimate fuel spending using your annual mileage, local fuel prices and the specific trim’s rating. Then compare the actual purchase price and financing offers for the vehicles you are considering. A higher published fuel-economy estimate alone does not establish which one will cost less overall.
2. Verify the drivetrain and seats on the actual vehicle
Toyota says all 2026 U.S. Highlander gas and hybrid grades have standard all-wheel drive. The 2026 configuration seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs; select grades offer a second-row bench and seating for up to eight. Trim and equipment availability can vary by region and vehicle.

Check the VIN, window sticker and actual cabin rather than relying on a generic listing. If possible, bring the passengers or child seats you expect to use and test access to the third row, second-row layout and cargo space.
3. Match towing plans to the vehicle’s rating
Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds for 2026 gas models. Do not apply that model-level figure to every Highlander year, powertrain or configuration. Before towing, confirm the individual vehicle’s rating, equipment and loading limits in its documentation. Toyota cautions owners not to exceed the published capacity; its 2026 announcement and brochure provide the current model-year reference.
Consider the loaded trailer and the vehicle’s occupants and cargo, not just the trailer’s empty weight. If you cannot verify the rating and relevant equipment for the specific car, do not assume it is suitable for your towing needs.

4. Treat warranty coverage as specific to the vehicle
Toyota’s general new-vehicle coverage is 36 months/36,000 miles for basic coverage and 60 months/60,000 miles for powertrain coverage. For Toyota hybrid vehicles beginning with model year 2020, Toyota states that the high-voltage battery warranty is 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. For a used vehicle, establish its first-use or in-service date, current mileage and applicable warranty documents before treating any coverage as a benefit. Toyota’s published hybrid battery term does not mean a used hybrid automatically has the full term remaining.
5. Understand what Toyota Certified Used status does—and does not—tell you
Toyota describes Gold and Silver certified-used coverage levels, along with an inspection process. Toyota Owners lists a 160-point inspection for certified vehicles and 174 points for certified used hybrids. Those figures describe Toyota’s program; they are not an independent reliability rating or proof that a particular vehicle is right for you. Ask for the vehicle’s inspection paperwork and written warranty and roadside-assistance terms, and confirm whether it is Gold or Silver. The documents for that vehicle control. 6. Check the VIN, title and vehicle history
Before buying used, match the listing and paperwork to the car. Confirm its VIN, model year, trim, odometer reading, title and powertrain, and check that the stated equipment is actually present. Use the official NHTSA recall lookup to check for open recalls by VIN. A model name or a seller’s assurance cannot establish the recall status of an individual vehicle.
Request maintenance, repair, accident and ownership records. A vehicle-history report can be useful, but it is not a substitute for inspecting the car; it may not capture every event or repair. Check that the service history and condition make sense alongside the mileage and the seller’s description.

- Fluid leaks, tire condition and brake wear.
- Warning lights and the operation of safety and convenience equipment.
- Hybrid-system operation, if applicable.
- How the vehicle drives during a road test.

Toyota notes that features and packages can depend on region and availability, so verify the specific vehicle’s window sticker and inventory listing. For a used one, weigh its price and financing against mileage, condition, service and accident records, inspection findings, remaining warranty and any certified-used coverage.
In either case, compare the vehicle’s configuration with your needs: drivetrain, seat layout, cargo use and towing. The relevant question is not simply whether a Highlander is new or used, but whether this particular vehicle and its total cost suit your use.

9. Check maintenance information for the correct model year
Maintenance schedules, equipment and specifications can differ across Highlander years and trims. Use the year- and model-specific manual and maintenance information rather than assuming that a newer model’s details apply to an older used one. Toyota provides Highlander owner manuals and warranty resources; match the documents to the vehicle’s year and configuration.
10. Make the decision from verified documents and condition
Before committing, make sure the seller’s claims line up with the VIN, paperwork, actual configuration and inspection. Confirm any recall follow-up, warranty coverage and certified-used terms in writing. If a key fact—such as the vehicle’s history, towing rating or remaining coverage—cannot be verified, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with the Highlander name, a certification badge or a broad model-year claim.
