Before buying a Tesla, price the exact car and ownership costs, confirm that charging fits your routine, and check the VIN’s warranty, history, and condition. A Tesla Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle has program-specific inspection and warranty coverage; a car sold elsewhere does not automatically have those benefits. This guide is U.S.-oriented and reflects information current as of October 7, 2026.
1. Compare the full cost, not just the advertised price
Build a budget around the specific vehicle and your location. Include the out-the-door price, financing, insurance, charging, and—if you need it—home charging equipment and installation. Get current insurance and financing quotes rather than relying on a general ownership-cost estimate; there is no single cost figure that applies to every Tesla buyer.
For home charging, check your utility’s rates and any applicable rebate, along with the cost of equipment and electrical work. Tesla lists $750–$1,500 as an example range for installing a new 240-volt outlet. That is an illustrative figure from Tesla’s Home Charging support page, not a quote for your property.
2. Decide whether a new or used Tesla fits your priorities
Compare like with like: the same model and configuration, similar mileage where relevant, the features actually included, and the warranty position. A lower listing price is only one part of the decision; condition, history, financing, and remaining coverage can change the overall value. Inventory and offers vary by location and over time, so check current listings when you are ready to buy.

Prices, financing offers, and vehicle configurations are time-sensitive; verify them directly for the car you are considering.
3. Know what Tesla Certified Pre-Owned does—and does not—cover
Tesla says each vehicle in its CPO program passes a 119-point inspection and comes with an Autocheck History report. Tesla also describes CPO coverage as any remaining original New Vehicle Limited Warranty, when applicable, plus Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage. Confirm the included terms for the specific car before purchase.
These are claims about Tesla’s CPO program, not every used Tesla. An independent dealer or private seller does not automatically provide Tesla’s CPO inspection, report, or warranty coverage.
4. Check the warranty by VIN, model, and date
Tesla’s current Vehicle Warranty support page lists basic coverage of four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Battery and drive-unit coverage differs by model grouping: the listed terms are eight years/100,000 miles, eight years/120,000 miles, or eight years/150,000 miles. Applicable battery terms include a 70% minimum battery-capacity retention provision.

Those published terms are not enough to determine coverage for an individual used car. Ask for the VIN-specific warranty documents and confirm the model, original purchase or delivery date, mileage, and any remaining coverage. Do not infer the warranty period from the model name alone.
5. Make a home-charging plan before delivery
If you can charge where you park, decide what equipment and electrical work your home needs before the car arrives. Tesla lists its Mobile Connector, Wall Connector, and Universal Wall Connector as options, and advises buyers to choose based on driving routine, parking, and vehicle, then consult an installer. A Level 2 home charger can be a practical fit when the parking space and electrical setup support installation, but not every buyer needs to purchase one.
- Confirm that you have a suitable place to park and charge.
- Ask an electrician to assess the electrical installation and the equipment that suits your car and home.
- Check your utility’s electricity rates and any local installation incentives.
Installation costs depend on the property and work required. Tesla’s $750–$1,500 new 240-volt outlet example is not a personalized estimate.
6. Check that public charging works on your actual routes
Think about the places you drive, not just the presence of charging stations in a general area. Tesla positions Superchargers for longer trips and home charging for everyday local driving. Its support guidance says Supercharger charge rates vary with battery size and age, state of charge, ambient temperature, and vehicle configuration. Tesla’s advertised figure of “up to 200 miles in 15 minutes” is a company-stated maximum, not a guaranteed result for every car or charging stop.

Before buying, consider whether your regular routes and likely longer trips have convenient charging options, and whether you can charge at home, work, or another reliable location. The time and amount of charge at a stop can vary with the conditions Tesla identifies.
7. Verify free Supercharging on the car itself
Do not treat a seller’s claim of free Supercharging as confirmed until you can verify it for the specific vehicle. Tesla says owners can check for free Supercharging in the app under Specs and Warranty. Credits may have conditions, and standard fees can apply when credits expire or do not cover a session.
A prospective third-party buyer may not be able to see the status before becoming the owner or a registered driver. Ask the seller how the claim can be verified and account for uncertainty in your decision.

For any used Tesla, review the specific vehicle’s title and available accident, repair, and service records. Check the tires, interior, and body, and confirm that charging operates and that there are no unexplained warning messages. Consider a qualified independent inspection when appropriate.

Tesla says its CPO vehicles include an Autocheck History report, but that does not replace checking the vehicle and its documents. The available sources do not establish one universal battery-health score or condition outcome for all used Teslas, so do not treat a single general claim as a substitute for evaluating the car you may buy.
9. Do not count on an expired federal clean-vehicle credit
According to current IRS guidance, federal clean-vehicle credits for new, previously owned, and qualified commercial vehicles are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle acquired by that date may still qualify if it is placed in service later and all requirements are met.
Other state, local, or utility programs may have different rules. Tesla’s incentives information cautions that availability and eligibility can change; check the sponsoring agency or utility for your location and the exact vehicle rather than assuming a program applies.
10. Verify financing and tax rules before counting a deduction
Tesla’s tax information describes a possible deduction of up to $10,000 in qualifying interest for certain new passenger vehicles, subject to conditions and an income phaseout; Tesla’s summary says used vehicles and leases do not qualify. This is not a guaranteed saving or a substitute for checking your own eligibility.
