Its rounded styling drew on the military M-38A1, while its evolving options and special editions mean a CJ-5’s year and installed components matter as much as its name—especially when buying one or ordering parts.
1. The CJ-5 arrived for the 1955 model year
Kaiser announced the CJ-5 on October 11, 1954. Jeep’s corporate history describes its softer styling and rounded contours as based on the 1952 Korean War M-38A1. Jeep’s 1950s history is the source for this chronology and the historical specifications below.
2. It was a civilian Jeep, not simply a rebadged military vehicle
The M-38A1 connection explains the CJ-5’s design lineage, but Jeep identifies the CJ-5 as a civilian Jeep and notes changes to dimensions, engines, axles, transmissions and seating. The military design influence is part of its story, not a reason to treat every component as interchangeable with the military vehicle.
3. The original wheelbase was 81 inches
Jeep gives an 81-inch wheelbase for the CJ-5 at introduction. That is a useful reference for the early vehicle, not a complete dimension set or a specification to apply automatically to every later model year.

4. It stayed in production for nearly three decades
Jeep dates CJ-5 production from 1955 through 1983 and describes it as the longest-running Jeep Brand vehicle. Its 1970s history says the CJ-5 and CJ-7 were built until 1983, when demand for the CJ-7 led to the CJ-5’s discontinuation. The length of that run is why a single generic description cannot capture every CJ-5.
5. A Dauntless V6 brought a major power increase in 1965
Jeep’s historical specification for the 1965 Dauntless V6 is 155 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Jeep described its horsepower as nearly double that of the standard four-cylinder. These are manufacturer-published historical figures, not results from a modern test.

6. AMC V8 options arrived in the 1970s
Jeep says AMC-built 304-cubic-inch V8s became available on CJ models beginning in 1973, with a stated output of 150 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque. Jeep’s historical account also mentions 360-cubic-inch V8s, but it does not provide a complete year-by-year engine chart. Confirm the engine in the individual vehicle rather than inferring it from the model name or year alone.
7. Special editions are part of CJ-5 history
Jeep lists several special-edition names across the CJ-5’s run:

- Super Jeep: 1973 and 1976
Jeep says Renegade models typically featured a 304-cubic-inch V8, stronger drivetrain, alloy wheels and a Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential. “Typically” matters: a surviving vehicle may have been modified, repaired with different components or lose original equipment over time. A trim name alone does not establish what is installed now.
8. The CJ-5 was used for work as well as recreation
Jeep’s historical account notes popularity with fire departments and a Camper concept. Those examples show the range of uses associated with the model; they do not establish comparative sales figures or how common any particular use was.

9. Match a manual and parts to the specific vehicle
Because the CJ-5 spans many years and engine and equipment changes, “CJ-5” alone is not enough information to establish fitment. Mopar’s restoration parts and literature page lists restoration parts and manuals. A period service manual is organized by system and distinguishes coverage for the Hurricane F4 and Dauntless V6.
Before ordering parts or choosing a manual, check:
- The vehicle’s model year, using reliable vehicle records where available.
- The engine and drivetrain actually installed.
- Relevant body and windshield configuration, and any prior modifications.
- The manual’s stated year range and whether it covers the vehicle’s engine and drivetrain.
- For a physical manual listing, whether the item is a book and not a digital or otherwise different edition.
Do not assume a part or manual for one CJ-5 year or engine will cover another. A seller or catalog can help identify a likely fitment range, but confirm the exact application before purchase.

10. Treat parts availability as separate from historical fitment
A specialist catalog can be useful for narrowing down likely applications, but it is not proof that an item is currently in stock or will fit a particular vehicle. One CJ-5 catalog explicitly warns that it is outdated and that prices or availability may be inaccurate. Check current stock and fitment directly with the seller, and verify the part against the vehicle’s installed components.
What the historical record does—and does not—establish
Jeep’s cited history supports the central timeline and selected specifications, but it is not a complete year-by-year guide to every CJ-5 configuration. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable production total, comprehensive drivetrain combinations, crash-test results, rollover rates or a modern safety rating. For a specific vehicle, condition and modifications require inspection; historical model information cannot substitute for that assessment.
