“Hemi” describes a combustion-chamber shape, not one engine or one performance level. Chrysler used the name for its early FirePower V8s, the racing-bred 426, and a later family of engines with different displacements and outputs. Knowing which Hemi you mean is essential to understanding its history—and to choosing one for a build.
1. “Hemi” refers to the combustion chamber
The name comes from the hemispherical shape of the combustion chamber in the cylinder head. Chrysler’s early design was intended to improve combustion, allow higher compression, and reduce heat loss compared with earlier V8 designs, according to Chrysler’s corporate history.
The name is not a complete specification. A first-generation FirePower, a 426 from the 1960s, and a modern 5.7-liter Hemi are separated by decades of engineering and serve different applications.
2. Chrysler’s first Hemi was the FirePower
Chrysler dates the development and reception of its FirePower V8 to 1950. The FirePower name appeared on 1951 model-year cars; Stellantis reports a 180-horsepower rating for those engines. Chrysler identifies 1958 as the first generation’s final year. These milestones describe the early Hemi era, not the later 426 or modern engines.

The design also featured in high-performance cars. Chrysler’s history lists the 1957 Chrysler 300C with a 392-cubic-inch Hemi rated at 375 horsepower. That rating belongs to that specific engine and car; it should not be treated as a direct comparison with ratings from different eras or test conventions.
3. The 426 grew out of racing priorities
In December 1962, Chrysler assigned engineer Willem “Bill” Weertman and a team to develop a 426-cubic-inch engine for the 1964 NHRA Winternationals and Daytona 500, according to NHRA’s 2025 retrospective. The design joined a deep-skirt 426 Max Wedge block with hemispherical combustion chambers associated with the 392 Hemi, emphasizing airflow and high-rpm performance.
Tom Hoover, a Chrysler engineer and Ramchargers figure, recalled the basic idea: “We suggested putting Hemi head on the wedge block,” Hoover recalled. “It wasn’t radical; it was just the best way to take advantage of work that had already been done.”

4. The 426 came in different race and street forms
“426 Hemi” can refer to more than one version. NHRA distinguishes Drag and Track Race Hemis from the Street Hemi. They shared the broad engine architecture, but their intended uses differed: race engines were developed for competition, while the Street Hemi was built for production cars.
Stellantis says the 426 Race Hemi debuted in 1964, and the street version followed in 1966 alongside a return to NASCAR. The company reports that 11,000 Gen II 426 Hemi engines were produced for customers; that is Stellantis’ figure, rather than an independently audited production count.
5. Racing success made the 426 a legend
The 426’s reputation rests on its racing role as much as its engineering. Chrysler set out to build an engine for both drag racing and stock-car competition, and the resulting architecture became closely associated with the brand’s motorsport history. NHRA’s account explains the technical logic—combining an existing block with hemispherical chambers to support airflow—rather than reducing the engine’s appeal to a single horsepower figure.

There is no sound basis in the cited sources for calling the Hemi the most powerful engine overall. Its significance is better understood through its design, its competition-focused development, and the distinct versions that followed.
6. The Street Hemi reached production in 1966
The Street Hemi brought the 426 name from race development into production cars in 1966. Its arrival also coincided with a return to NASCAR, according to Stellantis. That does not make every 426 a street engine: race and street versions had different purposes, so the label alone does not tell you which configuration you are looking at.
Horsepower figures also need context. The same engine can be described using gross or net ratings, and the two methods are not interchangeable. Stellantis’ historical discussion of a 1971 426-equipped car distinguishes those rating conventions; compare figures only when the measurement basis and application are clear.

7. The Gen III family arrived decades later
The modern Hemi is a separate chapter. Stellantis dates the debut of the Gen III 5.7-liter Hemi to a Ram pickup in 2003, with that debut engine rated at 345 horsepower. It is not simply a 426 brought back unchanged; “Hemi” connects the name to a combustion-chamber design, while generation, displacement, vehicle, and configuration determine what the engine actually is.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Modern Hemi displacement and output vary
Stellantis lists Gen III displacements of 345 cubic inches for the 5.7-liter, 370 for the 6.1-liter, 376 for the 6.2-liter, and 392 for the 6.4-liter. Output varies among versions and model years, so a displacement or the Hemi label alone cannot identify a particular engine’s power.
For reference, Stellantis reported 840 horsepower for the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi in the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. That is a model-specific figure, not a rating for every 6.2-liter Hemi.

9. Crate Hemis range from specific builds to extreme output
Modern crate engines illustrate how broad the name has become. Mopar’s engine-accessories listing, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a 6.4-liter crate engine configuration at 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft, and a supercharged 426 Hellephant at 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft. These are product-specific figures, not apples-to-apples ratings across Hemi generations; consult the current Mopar listing for configuration details and availability.
Stellantis’ 2018 Hellephant announcement framed the supercharged 426 as a crate engine for pre-1976 vehicles. That was launch-era context, not proof of current stock, fitment, or terms. A crate engine’s published output does not by itself establish what it takes to install or use it in a particular car.
10. A Hemi swap needs more than an engine choice
Before planning a swap, identify the exact engine and vehicle combination. The engine’s physical dimensions and mounts matter, but so do the systems that make it run and work with the rest of the car. Stellantis’ 2016 overview of classic-car Hemi conversions discusses swap kits for 5.7- and 6.4-liter engines; those historical kit details should not be assumed to reflect current contents or compatibility.
- Controls and wiring: determine what engine-management hardware and wiring the chosen engine requires and what the vehicle already has.
- Transmission: confirm compatibility with the engine, vehicle, and intended use.
- Fitment: check mounts, clearance, and other vehicle-specific installation constraints before buying parts.
- Kit contents: verify current kit components, fitment, and terms with the supplier; an older announcement is not a current parts list.
Use the engine’s generation, displacement, configuration, and intended application—not just the word “Hemi”—as the starting point for comparing options.
