The 2025 Honda CR-V e:FCEV is a plug-in hydrogen fuel-cell crossover: it can travel on battery power for short trips, recharge from a plug, and use hydrogen to generate electricity for longer driving. Honda lists a 270-mile EPA range rating, but access to hydrogen stations—and Honda’s California-only availability—may matter more than the headline range when deciding whether the vehicle fits your life.
1. It combines plug-in charging with hydrogen fuel-cell power
The CR-V e:FCEV is not a battery-only electric vehicle, nor does it burn hydrogen in an engine. Honda describes it as a fuel-cell vehicle: hydrogen and oxygen combine in the fuel-cell stack to generate electricity, with water as the vehicle’s only tailpipe emission. Honda’s official 2025 FAQ puts it this way: “A fuel cell vehicle generates electricity using a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen inside its fuel cell and emits only water.” That statement concerns the vehicle’s operation; it does not describe emissions from producing or transporting hydrogen.
The onboard battery also allows plug-in charging and battery-only driving. In practice, the two energy sources complement one another: charge for shorter local trips when convenient, and use hydrogen for longer driving.
2. Honda lists a 270-mile EPA range rating
Honda publishes a 270-mile EPA range rating for the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV. This is a rated figure, not a guarantee of the distance a particular driver will cover. Driving conditions and other factors can affect actual range; no independent real-world range result is established here.

Honda’s specifications also list 29 miles of EV range. That shorter battery-only range may suit routine local trips if you can charge regularly, but it is not a substitute for the vehicle’s hydrogen capability on longer journeys.
3. Its listed efficiency is 94/79/87 MPGe
Honda lists fuel economy of 94 MPGe city, 79 MPGe highway, and 87 MPGe combined for the 2025 model. MPGe is an energy-equivalency measure, not a hydrogen price or a prediction of your fuel bill. A real ownership-cost comparison would need local hydrogen prices and your charging costs; those costs are not established by the published figures.

4. Hydrogen access is the biggest practical constraint
Honda says the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV is available through participating dealerships in California, with eligibility based on proximity to approved hydrogen stations in Northern and Southern California. That makes location and route coverage central to the decision—not just the car’s rated range.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center reported 54 retail hydrogen fueling stations nationwide in 2024, most concentrated in California. That is a historical count, not a live station total or confirmation that a particular station is operating today. Before committing, check current station status and map the routes you actually drive.

5. Honda advertises up to $15,000 in hydrogen fuel for a three-year lease
Honda’s model page advertises up to $15,000 of hydrogen fuel over a three-year lease. “Up to” matters: this is an advertised lease benefit, not a general cash rebate or a guaranteed amount of fuel for every lessee. Offers, eligibility, and terms can change. Ask a participating dealer for the current offer in writing before relying on it in a budget.
6. Hydrogen refueling and plug-in charging take different amounts of time
Honda says hydrogen refueling takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes. For plug-in charging, Honda says Level 2 charging adds approximately 29 miles of battery range in about 2.5 hours. These are manufacturer-provided estimates, not independently measured results; charging time and available range can depend on conditions and equipment.

At home, a compatible Level 2 EV charger may make it easier to use the battery for routine trips. Honda’s researched material does not specify connector details, so confirm vehicle compatibility and the electrical requirements with a Honda dealer or qualified electrician before buying or installing charging equipment.

8. Its hydrogen tanks store fuel at high pressure
Honda lists hydrogen capacity of 4.3 kg and tank pressure of 10,000 psi. These figures describe the vehicle’s high-pressure storage system; they are not a reason to handle or service it yourself. Follow Honda and dealer guidance for fueling and safety information.
9. It includes external power and Honda Sensing features
Honda’s specifications list a 120-volt/1,500-watt external power supply and Honda Sensing driver-assistance features. The power-supply figure identifies the listed capability; it does not establish how long a device can run, which appliances are suitable, or whether a particular use is supported. Check the owner’s information and dealer guidance for operating limits. Honda Sensing is a feature suite, not a substitute for attentive driving.
10. Ownership depends on both stations and dealer support
Honda says hydrogen stations can be located through HondaLink and that maintenance is handled by CR-V e:FCEV dealers. Before leasing, confirm there is a participating dealer within practical reach as well as dependable fueling on your regular routes. Availability and service arrangements may vary, so verify them directly rather than assuming any Honda dealer can support this model.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the CR-V e:FCEV fits
- Check hydrogen first: Confirm live station status and coverage for your home area and regular longer routes.
- Match the battery range to your routine: Consider whether Honda’s listed 29-mile EV range covers the local trips you expect to make between charges.
- Assess charging access: Decide whether you can use Level 2 charging at home or nearby, and verify equipment compatibility.
- Choose the convenience that suits you: Weigh Honda’s estimated 3-to-5-minute hydrogen refueling against slower plug-in charging for battery driving.
- Verify eligibility and terms: Ask a participating California dealer about your location, vehicle availability, maintenance support, and the current written lease offer.
