Arkansas offers mountain switchbacks, forested ridges, river valleys and long, open drives along the Mississippi Delta. These ten route ideas range from a short byway segment to multi-day itineraries; some are officially designated scenic byways, while others are loops or themed drives. Choose by the landscape you want, the time you have and the stops that interest you.

Choose a route by landscape, time and stops

For a winding mountain drive, look to the Ozarks and Ouachitas. Scenic 7 connects several regions on a long north–south route, while Mount Magazine and Talimena offer shorter mountain-focused drives. In eastern Arkansas, Crowley’s Ridge Parkway and the Great River Road trade steep curves for ridge woodland, farmland and Delta communities.

  • For an all-day point-to-point drive: Scenic 7 crosses much of the state, so plan around chosen stops rather than treating it as a quick transfer.
  • For a mountain-focused outing: Mount Magazine Scenic Byway or the Arkansas segment of Talimena Scenic Drive offers a more concentrated experience.
  • For a loop or multi-day itinerary: Consider the Boston Mountains loop, the Northwest Arkansas sample itinerary, or Riding the Ridge.
  • For a flatter eastern drive: Crowley’s Ridge Parkway and the Great River Road showcase a different side of Arkansas.

1. Scenic 7: El Dorado to Harrison

Scenic 7 is a roughly 290-mile north–south drive from near El Dorado to Harrison, crossing several Arkansas regions. Its northern stretch is especially curving and scenic; leave time for stops rather than relying on mileage alone to set the schedule. Arkansas.com’s Scenic 7 Byway guide describes the route.

Stops to consider

  • Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources near Smackover: Add an oil-history stop near the southern end.
  • DeGray Lake: Take a waterside break.
  • Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs: Explore the historic bathhouse district.
  • Lake Dardanelle: Pause along the route north.
  • Jasper and the Grand Canyon of the Ozarks: Take in the northern highlands before continuing to Harrison.
  • Harrison’s historic square: Finish with a town stop at the northern end.

2. Pig Trail and the Mulberry River

Arkansas Highways 16 and 23 pass through Ozark scenery between the Fayetteville and Ozark areas. The roads’ winding character makes the drive itself part of the outing; Turner Bend and the Mulberry River crossing are useful points to orient a stop.

Stops and activities

  • Turner Bend: Use this area as an anchor for exploring the river corridor.
  • Pig Trail Falls: Arkansas.com lists the falls as a possible stop; check current access before setting out.
  • Mulberry River float: Floating is an optional activity, not a guaranteed condition. Check river levels and confirm outfitter details for your travel date.

3. Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway and Buffalo River country

The Highway 21 corridor leads through forested Boston Mountains scenery toward Buffalo National River country. It works as a standalone drive or as one part of a larger Northwest Arkansas itinerary. The tourism guide describes ridge and stream-headwater scenery along the route. See Arkansas.com’s Ozark Highlands route information.

Make it part of a larger loop

A sample Northwest Arkansas itinerary connects Mount Magazine, the Pig Trail, Fayetteville, Buffalo River country and the Ozark Highlands route. Its authors report covering 450 miles over three days; that is one sample itinerary, not a standard duration for the byway. Choose any hikes or river activities to fit your schedule, and check current trail access and river conditions before committing to them.

4. Mount Magazine Scenic Byway

Highway 309 follows a 20.4-mile segment across Mount Magazine, Arkansas’s highest mountain at 2,753 feet above sea level. The byway runs between the Paris and Havana area. Sharp curves and hairpin switchbacks call for an unhurried pace. Recreation.gov’s Mount Magazine Scenic Byway page provides route and recreation-area details.

Where to stop

  • Petit Jean Valley Overlook: Stop for a view on the approach.
  • Benefield Trail: Consider a hike if time and conditions allow.
  • Summit visitor center and Overlook Drive: Spend time at the summit rather than rushing through the mountain road.
  • Cove Lake and Mount Magazine recreation areas: Recreation.gov lists boating, camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and picnicking opportunities. Check current access and facility details before planning an activity.

5. Talimena Scenic Drive

From near Mena, follow Arkansas 88 west toward Oklahoma. The Arkansas segment is about 18 miles to the state line; the broader Mena-to-Talihina drive is described as 54 miles in Arkansas.com’s fall guide. Those figures refer to different route extents, not competing estimates of the same segment. The drive climbs through forested mountain ridges to Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Arkansas.com’s fall-drive guide describes the wider route, while Recreation.gov’s Talimena information names Pioneer Cemetery as another stop.

Stops

  • Queen Wilhelmina State Park: Make time for the mountain setting and park visit.
  • Pioneer Cemetery: A named stop on the route; check visitor information before travel.

6. Boston Mountains Scenic Loop

For mountain scenery with convenient access to services, Arkansas.com describes a loop between Alma and Fayetteville using I-49 and U.S. 71. Its fall-drive guide gives 38 miles for the I-49 segment and 42 miles for U.S. 71. The loop combines tunnels, overlooks, forest and small-town food stops. Check Arkansas.com’s route description when planning the loop.

7. Crowley’s Ridge Parkway

This 198-mile route runs between St. Francis and Helena-West Helena along Crowley’s Ridge, a landform rising above the surrounding Delta. Expect woodland on the ridge above flatter agricultural country—a clear change of pace from the Ozark and Ouachita mountain drives. Arkansas.com’s fall-drive guide describes the route.

Stops to consider

  • Crowley’s Ridge State Park: Add a park visit to break up the drive.
  • Towns along the route: Use local stops to explore the region rather than expecting a continuous mountain-road experience.

8. Great River Road through the Delta

Arkansas’s Great River Road follows the eastern state border. Arkansas.com’s fall guide describes a 362-mile drive from Blytheville to Eudora, but another Arkansas.com listing gives a shorter route estimate. Mileage depends on the route version and endpoints, so confirm the segment you intend to drive instead of treating one figure as universal. This is a broad, relatively flat river-and-Delta drive, not a mountain-curves route. See the fall-drive guide and Arkansas.com’s motorcycling route listing.

Southern stop

Lake Chicot State Park is a strong stop in the southern part of the route. Check park information and hours before traveling.

9. Push Mountain Road and Sylamore Scenic Byway

Arkansas tourism lists Push Mountain Road and the Sylamore Scenic Byway among northern Arkansas’s winding-drive options. Treat this as a regional route idea rather than a fixed stop-by-stop itinerary: confirmed official stops are not established here. Check current access and visitor information for places you may want to include. Arkansas.com’s northern Arkansas route listing provides the route reference.

10. Riding the Ridge: northeast Arkansas loop

Arkansas.com describes Riding the Ridge as a nearly 200-mile route that can take three to four days, or be shortened to one or two. Unlike a continuous mountain drive, it combines music history, small towns, woodland and farmland. See Arkansas.com’s Riding the Ridge itinerary.

Named stops

  • Walnut Ridge
  • Beatles Sculpture
  • Imagine Gift Shop
  • Guitar Walk
  • Crowley’s Ridge State Park

When to go and what to check before driving

Fall color shifts with day length, temperature and rainfall, so published timing is a general expectation rather than a forecast. Arkansas.com says Ozark color typically becomes prominent around the second week of October and peaks in late October; much of the rest of the state tends to peak from late October into mid-November. The same guide advises booking lodging early because fall inventory fills. Consult its fall-color guidance, then check conditions closer to your trip.
