Toyota ranks second among brands in Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car reliability ratings, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive order of the 10 most reliable Toyota models. The list below is an editorial shortlist—not a numbered reliability ranking—of Toyota nameplates worth comparing, chosen to cover common used-car needs and models identified in the available reliability sources. The right choice depends on the model year, generation, maintenance history, safety equipment and condition of the specific vehicle.
How to read this Toyota shortlist
Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car brand ranking gives Toyota a reliability verdict of 73 and places the brand second overall. Its page names several Toyota models, but does not rank them against one another. Consumer Reports’ used-car listings also feature a 2017 Corolla, a 2014 Camry Hybrid and a 2014 Prius. Those listings are examples, not proof that every year of those models is equally dependable.
Consumer Reports says its 2025 survey covered about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000 through 2025, plus some early 2026 vehicles, and assessed 20 potential trouble spots. That broad survey informs model-history estimates; it cannot guarantee the condition of a particular car. Consumer Reports also notes that a model omitted from its reliable-used-car list may lack enough data for an assessment, rather than having been judged unreliable.
Accordingly, the models below are grouped by nameplate and intended use, not ranked from first to tenth. Their inclusion reflects Toyota’s strong brand-level showing and the models named in the available sources—not a consistent model-by-model scorecard.

Corolla
A compact sedan to consider for everyday driving. Consumer Reports includes a 2017 Corolla in its used-car listings, but that example does not establish a reliability result for every Corolla year or generation. Check the exact car’s maintenance history, equipment and recall status.
Camry
A midsize sedan option for buyers who need more room than a compact car offers. Camry appears among the Toyota nameplates on Consumer Reports’ used-car ranking page; the available evidence does not establish a Toyota-only model rank or identify a universally best Camry year.

Camry Hybrid
The hybrid version is a separate option to assess on its own rather than assuming its reliability matches every conventional Camry. Consumer Reports’ used-car listings include a 2014 Camry Hybrid. Treat that as a model-year example, not an endorsement of all Camry Hybrids.
Prius
A hybrid hatchback choice for shoppers whose priorities include efficient everyday transportation. Consumer Reports’ listings include a 2014 Prius, but the source does not establish that year—or any single Prius year—as the most reliable.

Avalon
A larger sedan to consider if cabin space and a more substantial road-going vehicle matter more than compact dimensions. J.D. Power named the Avalon its top overall model in the 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. That study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; it is not a ranking of used Toyotas across ages.
RAV4
A compact SUV nameplate listed by Consumer Reports among Toyota models. Compare the specific year and generation against your needs, and inspect the individual vehicle rather than extending Toyota’s brand-level reliability result to every RAV4.

Consumer Reports and J.D. Power measure different things, so their figures should not be compared as though they shared a scale. Consumer Reports’ used-car verdict is a brand-level rating, while its survey draws on reported trouble areas across a wide range of vehicle years. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by original owners after three years.
For context, J.D. Power’s 2026 study summary reports an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles, based on responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years. That number is not a Toyota used-car rating and is not directly comparable with Consumer Reports’ verdict of 73. Neither study can substitute for checking the history and condition of the car you are considering.
How to choose the right used Toyota
- Start with the job the car must do. Decide whether you need a compact or midsize sedan, a hybrid, an SUV or a pickup. Compare vehicles with similar purposes rather than treating every Toyota as interchangeable.
- Narrow the search to model years and generations. Reliability can vary between years and redesigns. Look for evidence that applies to the exact year you are considering; a listing for one year is not evidence for the whole nameplate.
- Compare the full ownership picture. Weigh the vehicle’s history, safety equipment, likely maintenance needs and fit for your driving—not just a brand reputation or survey result.
- Check the specific vehicle’s records and condition. Consumer Reports notes that buying used can trade some longevity and reliability for a lower purchase price. Its guide describes certified pre-owned cars as inspected late-model used vehicles backed by a warranty. Review what any CPO inspection and warranty actually cover, and assess the individual car before buying.
- Verify recalls for the exact car. Recall information is model-year- and vehicle-specific and can change. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Corolla page displays a recall alert, underscoring why a model name alone is not enough; check current recall status using the vehicle’s identifying information.
What matters more than a top-ten label
A reliability list can help you build a shopping shortlist, but it cannot tell you whether a particular used car was maintained, damaged or neglected. Consumer Reports’ used-car buying guide puts the trade-off plainly: “Buying a used car trades longevity and often reliability for a lower price compared with buying a new one.” Use survey history to guide which models to investigate, then make the decision around the precise year, records, equipment and condition of the car for sale.
